charting outcomes for IMGS

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Here's mine.

Matching (in specialty of choice) for IMGs (US and otherwise) is basically a coinflip at this point.
The "chance of matching per contiguous rank" curve seems much more linear for IMGs than for US MD grads but I might be comparing apples to kumquats here.
High step scores are good (duh). High step attempts are not (extra duh) with each attempt reducing your chance of matching by ~50%. When starting at 50%, those odds kind of suck.

US IMGS faired ever so slightly better than non us IMGS. 53 vs 48 percent. US IMGS matched with a lower overall step 1 / step 2 average. probability of matching is really high once someone ranks 11 programs or more.

most IMGS are from india/pakistan (obvious)

The most *duh* conclusions ever:

Summary
Some general observations apply to all of the specialties in this report. IMG applicants who are successful in matching to
their preferred specialty are more likely to:
· rank more programs within their preferred specialty
· have higher USMLE scores
· have fewer attempts at ECFMG certification examinations
· be U.S. citizens
· speak English as a native language
· have obtained ECFMG certification closer to the Match year (2013)
· have graduated from medical school closer to the Match year (2013)

My initial flip through didn't show anything that wasn't sort of available in the previous "Match Analysis" data. Probably is some stuff that wasn't there before.

Seeing the actual numbers to correlate to experience is nice. It's also interesting politically to see the NRMP really breaking down candidates by citizenship, country of origin, etc. There is plenty of discussion about the possibility of the Match turning into a two-(or muliple) tier system as other countries do it. I don't see that happening for a variety of reasons, but certainly there is a large degree of segregation in terms of programs, so having data specific to your "tier" is helpful.

One interesting new piece of information is the match data by country (Chart 15). Since many countries have a single medical school, this effectively publishes their match numbers. Granada = St Georges, and Dominica = Ross.

actually Dominica has 2 medical schools…Ross and All Saints…All Saints is much smaller than Ross, but Rossies will make mention that the numbers are skewed because of the All Saints numbers.
