I recently purchased a nice pair of orascoptic loupes. They are great and I love them. However, I have read decent things about cheap eBay loupes and wanted to look into getting some as a back up pair. Does anyone have any experience with any off eBay? Or have a recommendation? I will not be using them daily by any means but if I needed to send in my good pair it would be nice to have them handy. Thanks!

It says you are a Navy HPSP recipient...they will pay for your loupe and light combo up to $1400

don't mess with your eyes, you need them..

'Risk your eyes'? Come on!

I've got a pair of 'cheap ebay loupes'. $50 shipped, no tax.

3.5x 420mm working length.
LED light and Li-ion battery / charger included.

They are *just as good* as my $1200 3.8x Orascoptics or my $800 2.5x Orascoptics each with a $750 LED light.

I got them as a spare set, but couldn't tell the difference in use. Now I leave one set in one office and one in the other.

Don't believe the scare mongering / baseless, untested accusations. They are highly comparable.

My only gripe is there is no cable guide (i added tiny zip ties that go unnoticed ) and no filter for LED (I dim the light. Never an issue with composite in clinical use).

Buy some. Not as a spare. Just get some because they are good for most dental work where magnification and ideal light are important.

You are a dentist and not a specialist in optics, right? Are you familiar with any respectable clinical trials, comparing both types of loops? I guess no. Any chip stuff I ever got on ebay ended up being a total crap

Thanks for your response! I've been hesitant to buy into the idea that they are terrible for your eyes. I purchased a pair of orascoptic so I will have a "real" pair and am excited to use them. However, if I send them in for adjustment I figure I can use my another pair in the mean time. Was 420mm a good working distance? I believe they measured me a little farther than 420mm. How much did you spend on your eBay pair? Thanks again!

Even without considering that my cheap ($50, no tax, no shipping fee... 6 week wait though) loupes cost less than my charger for my Orascoptics, they are essentially *just as good for all the clinical work I do*.

Get some.

BTW, a $20 intra oral camera from eBay works nearly as well (not as easy to focus) as the $4200 ones we have. These things are not complicated devices. They are severely marked up.

It is also possible to buy materials from ebay for a fraction of the cost with unknown quality

Especially knowing, that you are not suppose to use products purchased from unlicensed companies

Hate to bring up old threads, but I was wondering if you still had the link to the specific loupes you purchased from eBay, or a similar one? I found this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Surgical-Me...hash=item4d04551014:m:mKjMak4ZG9XKfANBX5CVKAA. Looking to save a bunch of money! thank you!

I also forgot to ask how do they adjust for or know your focal distance? Is this something you tell them before buying?

Those are the same ones in black. Use a tiny zip-tie to hold the cord on the frame.

Frankly, if you like them, buy another as a back up.

It takes a few minutes to get a clear image as they are not custom. But once set (only adjusted once), they are functionally indistinguishable from my Orascoptic 3.8x lopues.

Do you use them for a majority of the procedures you do, including RCT?

I find the working distance on these to be absolute atrocious
You can adjust the lens to where your eyeballs rest just fine. But to adjust for working distance, you have to lean in more than you need to and that ruins your ergonomics

I got the longer working distance, it's close to ideal for me.

Can you explain what you mean by you got the longer working distance? Are you saying you had to request this, or adjust it yourself?

And how do you go about requesting it?

There are a few different colors, magnifications, and working lengths available. Mine are the 3.5x magnification and 420mm working length. Just search for them.

I bought some but returned them. I found them very hard to look through. I've found personally that I like loupes that have the largest opening to the eye. It is easiest for me to look through and feels natural. The Ebay loupes had the smallest aperture to see through.

Thank you! Finally someone with thorough and not vague answers. We need more people like you in this world lol

Mar and I aren't being vague though lol
Working distance is a very specific and technical term with regards to loupes.
It describes the distance at which your loupes will focus at. Aka that's the distance it works at; hence working distance.
Working distance is built in and can't be adjusted.
I got 420 mm but I feel like it is closer to 350mm for my eyes. pretty annoying

I am surprise jjdd says he has that problem though. For my loupes, all I have to do is bring the lens closer to my face (which is adjustable)
