Cheapest/Most Convenient Way to Get to Yale

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how to get to Yale from California (LA more specifically). I guess the most convenient way is to fly to the New Heaven Airport, which is yet too expensive... I lived all my life in the west that I have no idea how the transportation is like near CT. I wouldn't mind travelling a bit as I would love to use this opportunity to see the east side. 🙂

Also, how is the host program at Yale?

I took a plane (although it wasnt that cheap) from UCLA Area (LAX). Yales hosts are awesome. They totally aleviate any nerves you may have of the interview (and they may give you a little surprise).

I'm a Yale undergrad, but I didn't apply to Yale Med.

Plane tickets to Tweed-New Haven airport are a little more expensive. But consider that that you don't have to add extra expenses to get from a further airport to campus; the only cost will be a $5 cabride each way.

A lot of Yale students fly into Bradley/Hartford, which is cheaper. To get from Hartford to New Haven, however, you have to take Connecticut Limo, which is $50 roundtrip.

Other people fly into New York (JFK and Laguardia) or Newark. This post-flight trip is the most arduous, and requires a combination of bus/shuttle, train and cab. This might cost you $50-$60, and will certainly take you a very long time. PM me if you need specific directions.

I flew in to Bradley International in Hartford and took the CT Limo (which drops you off on the Yale undergrad or med school campus). For me, the price difference vs. New Haven was substantial (~$250 total vs. $450 total), so the $50 for the limo (which is just a van), was worth it. I also thought it was quite convenient, given that they pick up every hour from the med campus for your way back to the airport - so I basically finished my interview day, hung out in the admissions office for 30min or so, and went around the corner and got the van. It's 45min to 1hr each way depending on traffic.

I flew into LaGuardia and rented a car. Drive is not too bad ~ 90 min. If you are flying into JFK, add maybe 30 min.

Definitely go the route of flying into Hartford. Cheaper than New Haven, and the commute isn't as bad as flying into NYC.

I did my undergrad at Yale as well and am pretty familiar with the chore of flying to and from school....CT Limo is usually a DISASTER and makes several stops. Consider flying into LGA and taking the metro to New Haven. The train can take almost 2 hours but it's usually hassle free, cheap ($12 if I remember correctly), pretty convenient, and you may have an easier time getting a flight from LAX to LGA.

I flew into LaGuardia (the cheapest airline tickets take you here), took a $2 bus ride to the Metro North station, then took a $14 train up to New Haven, then a $5 cab ride to the Yale medical campus.

Hartford (BDL) and New Haven (HVN) are your best options out of LAX given that neither city has non-stop service from LA. (When non-stop flights are available to BDL it is almost always cheaper than HVN.) Compare price, travel time, and factor in the cost of ground transportation.

I'd stay out of the NY/NJ area because ground transportation can be a nightmare -- even with private car service it often takes my sister 4-5 hours from Newark to New Haven.

MetroNorth is a commuter railroad & it can be crowded. You have no guarantee of a seat. If you have luggage, the bus to train to cab can be a pain. Figure on the additional hours of travel (at least 3, in relative discomfort, when you figure out the best plan)

Amtrak (train service) will run about $84 (or more). It takes 2.5-3 hours each way.

Greyhound has service between the two cities for about $60. It takes 3-4 hours each way.


There is no efficient way to get there by commercial airline.

The least expensive way to get to Yale from Boston is backward. You have to take a Chinatown bus to NYC, then go back via Metro North to New Haven. Haven't taken Metro North in awhile, but that should run you about $30 one way. Same goes for all the CA people as well, I'd imagine, get to NYC somehow (probably cheaper options for that than New Haven) then take Metro North. Yale has a shuttle from the train station to the med school campus, but they may require a Yale ID.

The Chinatown bus is $30 roundtrip from Boston to NY and takes 4.5 hours.
One then transfers from Chinatown to Grand Central.
MetroNorth is ~$26-35 round trip depending on whether you are traveling "peak" or "off peak" and it takes ~2 hours from Grand Central Station to New Haven.
If you want to spend an extra 2-4 hours in transit (compared with taking a bus directly from Boston to New Haven) in order to save $4 then take Johnnydrama's advice.

Do not take Amtrak from NYC to New Haven. It is nothing but a waste of money. Metro North gets you there in almost the same time for a fraction of the price. Amtrak is a piece of federally-subsidized excrement.

I've taken the Greyhound b/w the 2 cities once before. Surprisingly easy, cheap, and hassle free.

Amtrak from NY to New Haven is much cleaner and more comfortable than MetroNorth. (one is "First Class" and the other is "Coach".)

You will get a seat on Amtrak but may not get a seat on MetroNorth. MetroNorth makes far more stops than Amtrak so it may take longer.

Amtrak is more expensive than MetroNorth so if $ is a major issue between NY & New Haven, MetroNorth is preferable.
(Amtrak goes out of Penn Station on West 31st St, Metro North goes out of Grand Central Terminal on East 42nd St.)


This applies only to the NY/New Haven trip. For longer trips, Amtrak is a special kind of Hell.
