I am based in NJ and I am looking to apply to an MSW program. This will be my second career and my husband already has an extortionate amount of student debt after gaining his PHD abroad. I am therefore looking for the cheapest MSW program. I am wondering if it will work out cheaper to pay out of state fees at a cheaper university than the one closest to me which is Rutgers. Rutgers would cost aprox $35k for the whole course not including living costs, books etc. Does anybody know of a programe out there which would be considerably cheaper? I would prefer the East Coast but if tuition was a lot less I would be willing to move to any state. I am also interested in a clinical track?

Many thanks

Have you looked into graduate assistant positions? At my school they pay tuition, half or full time tuition for part or full time work in various departments.

Hi there - thank you for the advice. As I am pretty new to the USA university system although I have heard about them I wasnt sure if you have to wait to be accepted before you are able to apply. I am still waiting for a response from Rutgers. I will have a look at the website though. I am thinking I may have to wait until next year now so I can research everything fully for next falls intake and try to apply to many more courses. I've submitted my FAFSA and in my application form specified I would like information regarding financial help but I havent heard anything yet.

There are many universities in other states with far cheaper in state fees but obviously if I moved there I wouldnt be classed as instate so I would have to be there a year before starting the course.

Thank you again
