My stepdad went to a garage sale recently and saw a stethoscope for 5 bucks. He knows nothing about them and neither do I. Since I am staring M1 this fall, he thought id be nice to get it even if its a piece. I thought it was very nice for him to bring it home as it just shows hes lookin out for me so please dont flame for him trying to do something nice.

Anyway, its a Prestige medical cardio sprague model no. 112. Its pretty much brand new. Just been sittin in the box for a while. I am going to buy a new and nicer one but just thought Id ask about this one. He got it for 5 bucks so yea...

Thanks

I have a sprague, (as well as my Littmann) it's a different model to yours but it's pretty good, so definitely hang onto yours.

Unless you are a cardiologist your stethoscope won't matter (even then it's debatable). Just hang on to the cheap one and save your money. I routinely forget my stethoscope and I just use the super cheap ones they have at bedside or the nurses' station at the hospital and they do the job just fine.

Unless / until you need a super-duper cardio grade scope, stick with the one your stepdad bought you. It will be more than sufficient for med school. 👍

I disagree with the "stethoscopes don't matter" sentiments.

Buy a nice one that you like and can use well and hear well with, and hang on to the other one as a back-up (keep it in your car in case you misplace yours, someone walks off with it, or you forget your good one at home some day). Having 2 is a good idea. You're going to be a doctor for the rest of your life, and many old school docs are still using the one they bought in medical school. It's not an item you should have to keep "upgrading", just get a nice/decent one now and be done with it.
