"CVS Health and Aetna on Thursday asked the Connecticut Insurance Department to approve their $69 billion merger, while independent pharmacists told the regulators the company resulting from the merger would threaten their businesses. CVS already has a broad presence in Connecticut, noted Tom Moriarty, executive vice president and general counsel of CVS, and its acquisition of Aetna is a "natural extension of our commitment to put consumers at the center of their health care," he said. Karen Lynch, president of Aetna, said the union with CVS is the "next and certainly the most important step in our own journey to really put consumers at the center of their care."
Nathan Tinker, CEO of the Connecticut Pharmacists Association, said the industry group is concerned the combination of companies such as the CVS-Aetna merger will lead to higher costs, reduce patient choice, and "drive independent pharmacies out of business." He called for state legislation to be enacted that requires pricing transparency and allows for regular and aggressive audits."

What does it mean to "put consumers at the center of their healthcare? LMAO.....Seriously though, what are they trying to even say....it's just corporate jargon. Means nothing....yet, both companies aligned and said this same statement....man we are in for trouble.

It means that they want patients to be responsible for their own healthcare/well-being (hence, they are in the center) as opposed to their doctor or other medical professional being the central reason for how healthy they are.

Nowadays it’s all about empowering patients to look after themselves. As healthcare professionals we can cook up the best recommendations or use the best technologies, but without buy-in from the patient then our efforts are gone to waste.

If a patient isn’t motivated to take their meds, then you aren’t going to improve health outcomes. If there is a new digital health app but it is too complicated for the majority of seniors to figure out how to use, then you may have never invented the app in the first place. Stuff like that.

Basically, they're trying to get all their "CUSTOMERS", not patients, to use CVS and this will obviously be done by rejecting claims at every other pharmacies. This is why independents will suffer. So messed up, literally, not a damn thing any of us can do about it...

This is the future of pharmacy. If you are a pharmacy chain, you can't easily increase prices or volume (doctors control that). You can't easily reduce labor cost. The way to increase profit to to merger with other companies. Cut out the middle man.

Can't easily reduce labor cost? Man thats the only reason my P&L looks good this year bro.....WM staff cuts,. YOU CAN cut help, very easily. I just had to walk out my staff pharmacist a month or so ago, explaining her SALARIED 56hr/2 week position was gone. She of course had 2 months pay and was able to apply for "other" jobs in the meantime. (which she will never get). Once end of October passes, we will replace with an HOURLY position, some new grad for 50 bucks or less and give them much less PTO.....etc....disgusting.
