Guys, this is my 2nd semester, and I just got done taking my chem 1 final. I think I am going to end up with a D for the class. BTW...the first time I tried to take chem1 was this past summer...I dropped with a W. Should I keep the D, and move on to chem2?...I don't know even know if texas dental schools accept people with a D in a pre-req. What should I do? Retake for the 3rd time, or move on to chem2?

Most dental schools require a C or better in all prereq's and your next chemistry will most likely build on your first chemistry so if you did not do well in Chem one you most likely will not do well in chem 2. JMO

I concur with the above advice. I know you are intelligent enough to move on or to retake the class right away, but you should either improve your drive for taking the class or totally revamp your method of studying before repeating it or it'll be another failure. I've retaken many classes to only slightly improve my grade because I didn't take my own advice. You need an A, not a C.

Do you just not go to class or study or do you completely not get chemistry?

Hah, nope...I study, and I understand chemistry pretty well. Basically, the university I go to is known for its extreme difficulty in science and math. I hate to blame it on the teacher, but I think if ...actually I know if I take it again, I'll take a different teacher, and I'll end up with atleast a B. My current teachers exams have many curveballs he likes to throw in, which totally mess up everyone's grade. He has to curve about 30-40 points on all his exams, he even says "Students, you aren't supposed to get all of the questions right." So.... 🙂 Any other advice? If I get a C, I am moving on to chem2. What'd you all think?

Just take chem 2 and do really well. I went through the EXACT situation as you and I got a D+ in first semester gen chem, A- second semester (with different teacher 😀) Sometimes, it really does depend on the teacher and school you attend. Just do well on the DAT chem section and show them that it's not you.

p.s. the D+ hasn't hurt my chances TOO bad...I got an interview at NYU and UCLA. So...you can do it!

Chem 2 does not have much to do with chem 1. If you understand the basic concepts of chem 1 such as molarity etc, that's all you really need for chem 2. Chem 2 is very math orientated. I forgot most chem 1 by the time I took chem 2 and I aced it.

I think a D would look pretty poor, but maybe it's time to move on and see if you have what it takes. Chem 2 is harder than chem 1, but you have to step it up sometime.

Move on to a different school...what is the point of testing if you make the test so difficult that students can't do well? The point is to learn the material, not to learn that there are chemistry problems out there that you can't do. Every student in your class knew that before day 1. Seems like your teacher is a poor one
