thanks to all in advance.
In brief i am a non trad who took gen chem I about 4 years ago. I got a c and an A in lab. I was working full time. I just signed up for Chem II and feel not very good at all either in math or with my gen chem I. If you were me would you drop now and get into Chem I and if so will it look bad on my transcript?

I appreciate your opinion.

OG.

not an easy question to answer on limited info, but I will gie a try at some guidance:

why did you get a C in lectre vs. an A in lab? were you hands on and just run out of time on tests? or is there something else that you can pick out?

Did you approach your professor? Are their practice problems and homework that can help boost your score?

how far into you semester are you and will a drop dissapear, be a 'w' or something similar?

Obviously, getting a W will look suspicious, but less bad than a C in chemI and a C in chem II.......

I wouls start with your professor's office hours and be honest and ask for help, then you can decide.

Sorry it is not a direct answer, but hopefully you can make a more informed decision with more info.

strongly suggest starting over in chem I assuming money isn't a big issue.

not only because it will look better to have the A but you need good recall of that information in order to do well in chem II. most importantly, you really need to know that stuff cold in order to tackle the MCAT with confidence.

thanks for taking the time to respond.
in brief the c stems from a collection of 12 quizzes. there were no exams. one quiz the remark prior to that was 'everyone will flunk this one'. i like the professor but it is difficult to get an A based on 3 maybe 4 questions weekly. I never missed a class, took careful notes but as you know if you do one step wrong in a problem the rest will also turn out wrong. when i looked later at rate my professor he got remarks that reflected his teaching style.

I go to a state university (rhode island) and i think the dept. is not run that well.

I appreciate your input and i think regarding Chem I you are right. The very first section discusses Sp2 orientation and the like. I will look into what a w/draw vs. drop is.

Thanks so much!

The likely key to your problems with chemistry is your problem with math. To master chemistry, you need to be able to use your math as a tool. Why not leave the chemistry, refresh your math until it's up to par, and then revisit chemistry. Whomever teaches the course is meaningless unless YOU have the tools to do well. Copying and recopying notes will be useless unless you have the tools to understand and master the subject matter otherwise you become a clerk who just copies. Get your math up to speed and then try the chemistry. I would audit Chemistry I (your received a C and don't need a retake) and then take Chemistry II for credit after you have the math tools to actually master Chemistry I.

I would retake it. Since you took it 4 years ago and got a C; you probably don't remember much of the stuff anyways. MCAT/PCAT would have gen chem questions in it. 😉

I'd recommend a retake as well, assuming you can make it fit w/ whatever else you have going on in your life. If you work hard at it you'll have a shot at boosting your gpa as well as mcat score
