There are many hotels in downtown Chicago which will most likely be pricey. I don't know of any hotels near UChicago although I am sure there are some. The south side is pretty gloomy and is on the South side (ghetto area surrounds the campus). The campus is safe from what Ive heard but the area surrounding the campus can be sketchy.
Get a hotel in downtown Chicago and you can take Lake Shore drive to U of Chicago in the morning which will be 20 minute drive with no traffic. The traffic on Lake Shore Drive is not bad in the morning. If you get a hotel in downtown Chicago, Northwestern is in walking distance. Hotel parking is prob going to be pricey as well.
I am not in pediatrics, just came across your post regarding Chicago since I am originally from there. Good luck and PM me if you need any other advice. Chicago is a great city, only in the summers though. 😉
Agree, halfway options aren't great. Choose a hotel in downtown, there's some lower price options (still expensive, but more reasonable) i.e. Choice Hotels, Hampton, Embassy Suites, etc.-- I would priceline it downtown and go from there.
