I am working on a secondary essay on diversity for several schools, and I have a list of possible topics/experiences that I could describe, but I am not sure which ones AdComs would prefer to read...I have read several of the past threads on diversity, including a helpful one with advice from LizzyM. I couldn't find a thread that answered my question though (I apologize if it is there and I missed it)...

Is it okay to discuss experiences from my childhood in this essay, or would AdComs prefer something more recent? I do have one activity from college that I am using, but it be okay if I also describe 2 projects/activities and 1 hardship from my childhood, especially if those activities were unique at that young age? I'm hoping to discuss how those activities and that hardship shaped my future goals, the skills/values that I gained from them, how I have used those skills in college, and how I will use them in the future. Would this be okay, even if the essay is heavy on childhood experiences?

Edit: I forgot to mention that I won several awards for one of those projects, so should I mention that as well to give it validity? Or would that sound like I'm just trying to add in awards?

Bump...any suggestions/thoughts?

Just to clarify, when I said "one activity from college," I didn't mean that I've only done one activity in college. I meant that I have one activity from college that taught me skills that could be considered as diverse...

So would it be okay to describe other activities/experiences from pre-adolescent years that could be considered as diverse?

Why don't you just mix recent experiences and how old experiences have affected you in your success and decision to be a doctor.

That's what I'm considering...I'm asking if it would be okay with AdComs for me to write so much about experiences that took place so long ago. Have any other current med school students written about activities from junior high school in their secondaries? Were those schools okay with that?

If any current med school students or AdCom members, maybe Catalystik or LizzyM, who see this thread could let me know what they think, that would be great!

I don't want to answer wrongfully but I'm pretty sure that if it is not your main topic it would be fine to include.
