Thank you for taking the time to read this post. I am seeking advice regarding my future college decision where I plan to attend in the fall as a pre-med, majoring in psychology with an emphasis in neuroscience (bs).
Here are the two schools and the comparisons so far:
California Lutheran University:
-close to home (option to save money and live at home, and familiar with the opportunities at the university)
-strong psychology program (psyd program)
-possible opportunities for internships at Amgen (pharm company)
-successful pre-health society
-suburb, but primary private university in the surrounding area
-possible job opportunities starting at my high school graduation
-able to see myself as a member of many specific groups on campus
-primary clinical opportunity: COPE Health Sponsors (already have volunteered 150 hours with the ER department though, volunteering in the hospital)
-45 minutes from Los Angeles
-slightly better academic prestidge than Dominican
-most students apply to medical school during their Junior, Senior, and a year after their undergraduate degree.
Dominican University of California:
-farther from home (have to form on campus)
-apart of the Honors Program (6 additional credits free, additional scholarship, and other opportunities available)
-well-developed clinical programs (Nursing school and PA program on campus)
-Primary clinical opportunity: Kaiser Permanente shadowing (7 months) and individual research opportunities integrated into curriculum
-slightly more expensive than California Lutheran University
-able to see myself as a leader and innovator on campus
-nearby San Francisco
-opportunity to complete COPE Health Sponsors in the summer between school years or Junior or Senior Year
-most applicants apply to med school during the senior, and the two years after completing their bachelor’s degree
Both schools have given me about the same amount of financial aid at this point. Dominican will most likely be considered the more expensive program, because I will have to live on campus and other living expenses.
