Hi,

I’m entering second year at a US DO school, and I’m a Canadian citizen.
I plan on pursuing an ACGME residency with the hopes of gaining an H1B visa (mostly
interested in primary care like FM). My school is doing a random match process for
3rd & 4th year hospital placements in 4-5 months (~Nov/Dec 2015) where we rank 2 hospitals and most
students (~70-80%) get their first two choices.

My problem is that I’ve been dating an American guy (NOT in med school) for a year now. He’s currently working
around where I go to school. We’ve talked about living together in third year provided that I get a rotation site here.
We have a pet together and our relationship isn’t trivial..

I have 2 questions:

  1. Would it be okay for me to rotate close to school in third year mainly for my relationship and try to rotate at hospitals that offer visas during my 4th year? (my school has sites in other states that are pretty close to hospitals that offer visas)
  2. Most sites around my school are preceptor-based. Does this have any bearing on how competitive I’d be for residency over ward/hospital-based rotations?

Many thanks in advance!

Other comments:
  • I don’t think my relationship will survive long distance.
  • I can see myself marrying him, but most likely not before I graduate.
  • This morning I realized FREIDA isn’t letting me search for H1B to have an idea as to where H1B sponsoring hospitals are located.. hopefully it works again.
