Hello,

I just applied to all nine schools for the class of 2017 and I have received invitations from all nine schools. I can't afford to visit all of them so I am trying to pick a few to go visit. One question I had is whether the specific school you go to has an effect on where you will be able to do residency. If I want to do my residency in the east coast is it a bad idea to go to CSPM or Scholl? Do residencies favor local students?

Also can you offer any advise on whether I should or shouldn't go to Temple, Scholl, CSPM, and DMU?

Thank you

Yes and No. If you are one of the brighter kids in your class you will have an easier time getting into the residency of your choice. If you're just hanging on and barley squeezing through it will be difficult to obtain the residency of your choice. There are some residencies like the BUSPM/Mercy that only take Barry students. Likewise, there are programs like Loma Linda that won't take Barry students because the school does not have an affiliation with the hospital. So despite how most people say that it doesn't matter, the fact of the matter is that it does matter (wow, i just used matter like 3 times....). So, some programs play favorites while other programs don't. However, if you are a solid student you shouldn't have a problem getting your top choices.

As for which school to pick...I'd go with DMU. They iz da top dawgs.

I know that this is a debatable subject but i personally do think it matters to an extend. Look at how many NY residencies get filled up by NY students and how many Fl residencies get filled up by Barry students. Now you could argue that these students just like to stay in their respective states. Sure, that may be true. But the fact remains that the west cost programs have a lot of west cost students while the east cost will have mostly east cost students. (Of, course there are programs that will have a heterogeneous mixture of all the schools). These programs get comfortable with the students and this tradition continues. Maybe if i have some free time i could look at the data and do some statistical analysis on it but i'm being very general here.

Heres another small thing to think about. Lets say I want a program with Dr. Al Armstrong at Mt. Sinai in Fl. Well Al also happens to be the radiology instructor for Barry students and the clinical coordinator. So essentially this would give me an opportunity to impress him more than someone from the west cost who may only get to extern there for a month. Meanwhile, I get the opportunity to have Al as a Professor, clinical advisor, and mentor.

At the end of the day hard work is all that matters. These are just some things to think about. just my opinion.
