How likely is it to get first choice to be in an airborne brigade right after 1-year AEGD? More specifically the 173rd airborne. Basically I just want to know if its possible to request specific units.

It is easier to request "types" of units - special forces, airborne, Brigade Dentist. It is also easier to request geographic locations - europe, SE US, NE US, etc...

Specifically the 173rd would be a tough unit to get - I don't know if they have a Brigade Dentist, but I can tell you that Vicenza where they are stationed is tough to get to. The year you are graduating a particular spot may not be open. Because assignments at any location can be from 1-4 yrs, if the slot is not vacant - you can't request it. Late fall of each year HRC begins to see what locations will be opening up for the next year. Communicating with them beginning in this time frame is a great way to develop an idea of what is available and to make a request for those locations. Sooner than that and they can't really let you know what is open.

Coming out of a 1 yr AEGD you have your best shot of being able to request and get picked up for any field unit like that (82nd, 101st, etc...) Airborne Dentist can probably shed some more light on this topic.

173rd as MAJ Mower said may be more difficult. I don't know either if they have a Brigade Dentist. However, if you want to go to the 82nd...if there is a slot open (which there usually is one opening), and they have 4...it is much easier. People are leaving there pretty frequently. If you can't get it right now, just wait, you never know.

Additionally, don't forget about the group assignments with SF. They are fun slots as well.

One thing to keep in mind...if you plan on doing any specialty training (to include 63B), you can no longer go to these units once you graduate. So, if you want to do Hooah stuff, you have to do it beforehand. I have seen many Officers want to do these assignments after graduation, not knowing they are no longer a possibility.

Hope that helps.
