Choosing Between Texas Schools

Can you elaborate on your complaints about the TMC and the UTH curriculum?
UT-H curriculum is 8-4 or 9-5. This is very stressful considering the materials you have to study. By the time you get back to your apt, take a nap and study, you have few hours of serious work done. Compare that to UTMB. Classes are 8-12 in first year and 1-4 in second year. Plenty of study time. Good PBL and POM(practice-of -medicine.) Good atmosphere. Less hassels and adrenalin compared to tmc. You can always visit or do your rotations in tmc if you are that addicted to it. Also at UTMB, You are introduced to the clinics two-three weeks after matriculation and you do more than 20 rotations before your boards, covering all specialties. wONDERFUL faculty. Most of their lecturers (>70%)are MD's and specialists, so you hear it as it is practiced in the real world. I can't tell you a lot here but feel free to go to thier website or e-mail thier student affairs for any questions. Most importantly, good Board scores. Everybody does very-well. You can't beat that. REMEMBER!!, your board score defines your future medical career.

everyone dotes on UTMB's 9-12 schedule...but that's their LECTURE schedule. 3 of your afternoons are filled with "practice of medicine small group", "practice of medicine site visit", and "practice of medicine wrap up" all of which look to be 2-3 hours long. (i'm looking at the schedule they gave us with all the pretty little blocks:) )

Still... that's better than sitting in a classroom for 8 hours straight.

Ok, for all of you thinking about UTH or UTMB. Here is information regarding the USMLE Step 1 scores:

Year...UTH....UTMB...Nat'l...UTH...UTMB...Nat'l
2002....91%......NA.....91%.....214.....NA......216
2003....89%.....96%....92%.....208....223......216
2004....86%.....93%....92%.....208....221......216
2005....92%.....96%....93%.....219....224......217
2006....95%.....99%....94%.....220....228......219

* Indicates preliminary results.

(The UTMB data comes straight from their website. The UTH data came from some admissions person...it's legit.) One more thing to add...the above dates correspond to the year that the exam was taken rather than the year of graduation.)
