Hi everyone! I am facing a dilemma right now. I would really appreciate any kind of advice and suggestion I can get here!

HKU MBBS programme has offered a place for me in 2007, but there is no scholarship so I have to pay for the full fees for international students.

I have also received a full scholarhip offered by a real estate investment company to study a double degree in NUS Singapore. This means the undergrad studies will be completely free. All I need to do is to serve a 5-year bond in that company.

I am still struggling between these two options and I have to reply to the scholarhip offer by this friday. So I would really be grateful for any info on the earning and lifestyle of doctors in HK. Is it guaranteed that international students can find a job after graduation or after the housemanship? Are there any other aspects that I need to consider before I make the decision? Any pieces of advice and further info on job prospect would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Hi there,

May I first know which country are you from? If i were you, I would definitely choose the MBBS programme in HK. I guess you should know how competitive it is to get in HK MBBS especially if you are a non-Jupas applicant. i have applied to HKU too but got rejected without an interview.

I guess it is rather contrasting btw the two options at hand and you seriously need to consider which course would you enjoy more and which profession would suit you better , esp. when you are thinking about becoming a doctor which is a life long career. With regards to what is the working condition and getting a housemanship in HK, I am not very sure too, though my friends all told me being a doctor in HK or Aust would definitely earn you more $ than in Singapore.

Do not lose this opportunity if you truly want to become a doctor (provided for the right reasons too). Though it is good to get a scholarship in Spore, but you got to know there is bond attached to it and what if you do not enjoy your work for the next 5 yrs?

Thank you very much for your advice, Bleary!

I guess the selection process definitely involves some elements of luck, otherwise how can they tell your suitability to medical practice just from that 15 min interview!

Upon retrospect, I think I am still inclined to study medicine, no matter how difficult and torturous the training is. The reason being helping others gives me tremendous satisfaction and meaning of life. But for the real estate company, I don't know whatelse I am pursuing other than financial gain. But my mum dismissed my preference as a naive dream; she said, ultimately, the comfort of life is the most valuable which i'll realise as I grow older...

So although I have almost made up my mind to go HK, I am still a bit concerned over my job prospect after graduation. Maybe, after all, the situation is not as rosy as what I've pictured...

Hi secret recipe,

I guess you must be a Singaporean right? Like all parents, my parents also encouraged me to study some other courses here based on the sole reason of greater financial gain with less effort put in. I guess this is a taf decision to make as at one hand we hope to pursue our dream, yet we are uncertain of what the future lies for us.

I am also in a similar quandary, by God's grace I got accepted into UNSW and the dateline for acceptance is like 1 June and I have yet to make the decision whether to go or to simply stay put in NUS. I reckon this is not a good feeling to experience, but many things seem to be at stake and all of us would wish to strike a win-win situation.

I do not know if you have came to a decision, but for me I have also posted similar questions as yours in the australia forum, hoping to find out more what future would lie in stall for me if I really chose to be doctor.
