I am an Native American but this heritage hasn't had anything to do with my opportunities. I didn't grow up on a reservation, or know the language or myths or anything. It is just blood. I kind of want to apply as URM but I also feel like this is a jerk move... what would you guys do?

You can apply to medical school as anything you want. Whether you are successful or not in gaining admission will depend on what else you bring to the application.

check off your race/ethnicity. you've got nothing to hide; that is who you are [why does this sentence sound so awkward?].

let the schools decide whether you 'count' as urm and whether you are a desirable candidate for their school.

why even stress about this? talk about your qualifications, experiences, how they have led you to medicine, etc. if that doesn't include reservation life, or native american culture, then so be it.

Hi Buffy,

In light of the situation you described in the Reapp forum, I wouldn't venture to offer advice on whether you should "check the box" or not; it's not my part to tell you who you are. Your genetic background is one of those things where it's like...it is what it is.

I would, however, suggest thinking it through and being prepared to explain the new identification, as well as why it was different from earlier application cycles.

Good luck on your path.
June
