Hey guys, I have an interview in Jan at UC and I was wondering if anyone here knew the deal about hold spots. I hope I am interviewing for a seat and not a "hold". Did anyone already get a UC hold/waitlist yet?

In case it matters, i am out of state.

In addition, if anyone wants to comment on the school, that would be great. I hear they ask about C's...nothing like introducing shame into the interview! perhaps the next question could be: what was the worst thing you've ever done!?

hey medstyle... sorry about calling you out on this... but it's a pet peeve. it's CincinNaTi.... but anyhow, yeah, UC is a pretty nice school. their facilities are good and from what I've heard/seen, they have great clinical years. gluck!

However, I was thinking of canceling it due to acceptance at OSU. Am I crazy to do that? I am not sure how they compare academically, but with OSU lowering their out-of-state tuition by 10000, its hell of nice deal.

yeah i hear osu is nicer too. Damn, why are they so cheap? Its not fair. Every school i get into is mad expensive.

I ditched interviews where there was no way i was going either. I won't name names, haha. There's no point in going to an interview so you can be stressed and then have to worry about getting in and in stuff, even when you don't plan on going.

Hey you guys-- arright, scope it. I am currently accepted at UCinci, and I'm holding on to my seat whilst I wrestle with the choice between UCinci and another (more expensive) program that I like better. As far as I know, even if they have given away most-to-all of their right-off-the-bat acceptances, the waitlist is nevertheless not too long. The interview is quick and dirty, though, and worth going to.

About the interview itself-- yeah, they ask about C's. That's the least of your worries. Explain the C's, they don't trip on it. What they DO do, however (as was my experience and has been confirmed by a number of other people I have spoken with), is take a small portion of the interview to push your buttons and see how you deal with stress. Don't freak out about it!! Just stand your ground, speak your truth, and it dissipates. For example, in my interview, ole boy was cool, very businesslike, didn't crack a smile, but was friendly. All the questions were standard, then boom, outta the blue he's all "Hmm... your response seems to me like a cocky one... are you always this arrogant? Do you consider yourself an arrogant person?" It was my first interview, so I figured it was par for the course. I spoke my peace, made my case, and then kept smiling, and he moved on as if it had never happened. Went from 0 to jerk in 2 seconds flat, then right back again. He even finished the interview with "It was honestly a pleasure speaking with you."

Also-- UCinci is a good program, and cheap, too, but if you are already nin OSU, I'd think about ditching UCinci. I was waitlisted at OSU, but had I received a big ole "come on down!" I'd a ditched UCinci pretty quick. It's just a matter of preference really, but I like OSU better on almost every metric of comparison. Kudos to you my dude! And good luck to both of y'all.

PS, the area where the school is is kinda fugly, but the school facilities are pretty bad@ss.

I wouldn't worry too much about whether you are interviewing for a seat or the hold list. The hold list is likely to move a great deal as more people receive multiple acceptances and the deadline for holding one acceptance only approaches.

It wasn't a tough interview at all. I think asking about C's is a required question for all interviewers. My interviewer asked it, but really kind of blew it off.

i hope they are still handing out acceptances like hot potatoes...i read on sdn somewhere that the "no love" decisions started coming for people who interview in mid Feb, so do you guys think that is true?

I interviewed on 11/23, and found out about my acceptance via the status page on 12/09. A letter, dated 12/09, arrived a few days later. Typical turnaround seems to be about two weeks.

16 people interviewed on the day that I did. They told us at the interview that one of two things would happen: 1) you would get an acceptance or 2) you would be placed on 'hold'.

And yes, I do know of several people that got placed on "hold" vs. accepted. I don't know if there's anything to the rumor of no spots being left or not.

letter grade in subjects ... A, B, C.. Good luck on your interview razorback. 👍 I interviewed there last week. It is a good school, but lots and lots of construction going on. Make sure you know the directions well.

Duh! Wow, I am on a roll! I'm not sure if I'll go to the interview. I have to be in Rochester on the 25th of February (Cincy assigned me to the 22nd). I have 2 other interviews (USC and Wake) within the same 10-day period. I'll wait and see what happens with the other schools I am waiting to hear from. Has anyone had any luck rescheduling with Cincy?

Yep! Just call the office and ask. They sent me an invite for Jan 6th, but my letter got lost in the mail 😡 . So, now I'm interviewing on Feb.14. I'm out-of -state (obviously), and I'm trying to decide between driving from the airport or taking a shuttle (because of the construction going on).

Any other SDNers interviewing Feb 14?

what a dick! if an interviewer asked me if i was 'always arrogant' i'd be hella pissed. people don't fly to a school from all over the country for that kind of crap. what is it with these schools, anyway?

anyway, my UC interview was a breeze. my interviewer just asked me about all the other interviews i had gone to. i think she was just curious about how other med schools present themselves at/during interviews. we had a nice, long chat. i've since declined my acceptance, though, so there's one more spot for you guys!

I am a student at Cincinnati. Don't let the construction scare you away....great student body, great faculty. This school produces excellent doctors. Something ridiculous like a 99% pass rate on the USMLE. I'm happy to answer any specific questions by PM.

i interviewed at uc in november and was put on hold, then accepted at the beginning of january. i'm really surprised to read about the stressful type interview... mine was super relaxed/conversation-like, and that's been the case with other people i've known who have interviewed there as well. i only applied to uc because i'm in state, but the interview day was great. cincinnati's a cool place... i can't wait to get back to ohio... sigh 🙂

Congrats, Stargirl!! I'm so glad you got accepted after all! Maybe I'll see you there in the fall. If I also get accepted to MCO, I think I'll have some tough decisions to make - I really liked MCO.

One of the reasons Cincy is my top choice is that the learning environment is very non-competitive, even with the H/HP/P/F grading system. In fact, I have heard from several people who attend (and I got the impression on interview day) that the students are very friendly and supportive of one another. I know med school will be stressful enough without having to deal with cut-throat competition among classmates!

I got totally opposite impression when I interviewed there. That is why I am little concerned. Only 1 out of 4 student tour guides (?) was forthcoming with the information and others are kinda serious. May it is only on that particular day! BTW any idea about the schedule?

To get a good idea about the schedule, get on the med school website. The first and second year schedules are posted that show the exact times/classes each day. Generally, from what I have seen, the first year schedule seems much lighter than second year.

We average about 20-22 hours of class per week...but I'd say only about 50% of the class attends lecture. I'm in the half that doesn't. We have weekly small group meetings for Physiology and Biochem that are led by second year students. There are usually some practice questions to do, and a brief quiz. The quizzes really don't factor into your final grade that much. I also go to anatomy lab, clinical correlation lectures, and our clinical medicine course that is mandatory (P/F). The rest of my time I spend at home, or at school, studying the course notes, and looking over the powerpoint presentations.

I would say there is virtually no competition amongst the students...not any that I have encountered. The older students are all immensely helpful as far as disseminating old notes and test materials. And the faculty is very accessible.

If you are a lecture person, the first year days feel quite long because of the afternoon sessions. There are fewer of those as a second year...and many days the second years are done by noon. But with pharm and path, the course work is more demanding.

Unless you've already been accepted at a school you're happy to attend, I would definitely recommend coming to Cincinnati even if you think you'll end up on hold.

Some of my good friends in the class were accepted off the wait list. You'll have to make that decision yourself.
