I've attempted to a search for this information, but came up lacking. So, I find myself in the uncomfortable position of being on the waitlist at my top choice school (see above) and I was wondering, if I have a snowball's chance in heck of getting off of the list.

Does anyone know if there is much movement on the waitlist at Cincy (I know it varies from year to year)? Anybody know what the waitlist situation was like last year? It's hard to imagine people that got accepted there turning it down to go elsewhere. I've already written a letter of intent to Cincy, in the hopes of showing how much I really, really want to attend.

Hoping and praying, and alas, waiting...

Hey, unfortunately, I am in the same situation as you. Just found out I got waitlisted on Friday. I don't know from experience how the waitlist works, but from what my interviewer was telling me, the chances are not that bad. He said that when it comes down to it, people end up going to other schools so that the chances of getting off the waitlist are probably about 1/3. Also, it seems that Cincy looks at their waitlistees monthly while some of the other schools wait until after they have interviewed every one. In my estimation, the chances seem better than some of the other schools although I may be biasly optimistic, given the situation I am in. 🙂

I really wish Cincy would tell us our spots on the waitlist though. Just so that I could know if I have a decent shot at getting off the waitlist or if I should start planning for next year.

They do look at their waitlist every month though? You heard that from your interviewer? That at least gives me a ray of hope.

JMassey and Kids,

I'm in at Cincy, and because I was rejected last year (no interview) I know it can be frustrating. I have no idea how the waitlist works, I know that they were pretty optimistic about getting in off the waitlist. Though, I don't know much, I just wanted to wish you both good luck. It's definitely an awesome school and where I'm going most certainly and I wish you both the best of luck, I hope we're classmates one day.

Let me know how things go.

GO DUKE, beat the TWERPS! DROWN THE TURTLE!🙂

is being waitlisted at Cinci the same as being put on hold or are they different catagories? I was put on hold in Dec and have not heard anything from them since.

Hello,
I think last year they accepted about a third of the class from the waitlist. So probably around 40 something spots. Just remember that there are a ton of people with multiple accepts, but they can only fill one seat in medical school. Come around to May 15th there will be a lot of waitlist movement and new letters sent out.

It is a great school and I am happy to be here, although we are in the middle of a test week (I read SDN to take a break from studying)! Good luck to all of you 🙂

As far as hold/waitlist. Usually hold means that they haven't interviewed you yet, but are not rejecting you yet either. While waitlist is you've been interviewed and not rejected/accepted. Either because there are not enough seats at that time, or they want to "wait and see" what other applicants they have.

hey,

I interviewed in december and after that was put on hold a few weeks later. So is this hold the same as a waitlist?

No. If you're on hold AFTER an interview, I guess they're deciding whether to accept, reject, or waitlist you (though, they're probably not sending out anymore acceptances at this point). What I've heard about med schools in general is that you won't get rejected after an interview unless you did something horrible at the interview (i.e. made racist comments, showed up in ripped jeans). They basically accept people they're super-impressed with and put everyone else on the waitlist. At Cinci, they have an alternate list that is formed around May 15, which is made up of people at the top of the waitlist. They ask you if you want to be on it. Then, people start getting accepted off the alternate list one by one to fill the class (once accepted people make their decisions). GOOD LUCK!! 😀

I'm not sure there is actually a difference between being on hold and waitlisted, because after interviewing in Dec. I was put on "hold" according to the status check site, but then early this month I received an acceptance off of the waitlist.

I was placed on hold today at UC after interviewing in early March. Is there a distinct difference between being on hold or being on the waitlist? Is being on hold better than being on the waitlist at Cincy? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

From what I understand about the hold category, is that they make acceptances from the hold category throughout the application cycle. However, in May those that are still in the hold category are placed on the waitlist and further offers of acceptance are made from this list.

Well, I guess being on hold this late is probably the same as being on the waitlist since May is right around the corner.

I gave up my Cincinnati acceptance a little while back. Good luck to you guys. UCincinnati is a great school and I hope my spot goes to a fine applicant.

Anyone heard anything about UC's waitlist formation?

I spoke to the admissions office, and hold is not the same as waitlist. If you're still on hold, you can still be either accepted, rejected, or placed on the alternate list. She said that final decisions would be made "soon" about the status and that letter would go out "around May 15th."

So probably soon, very very soon...

Well, its looks like the waitlist at Cincinnati has been formed. I got an e-mail today from them letting me know about it.

The e-mail said that I am in the top group of the list and they requested that I send them a reply to let them know I wish to be on the alternate list.

Also, the online status check still says I'm on hold, so it looks like that has not been updated yet.

I also received an email today about being on the top of the waitlist. I wonder if they tell everyone that...or if they send out seperate emails based on where you are on the list?

I just got the same email, and it sounded really positive! For once! They seem to be giving us hope! What a pleasent surprise....

Hopefully we all happen to be in the top group of the waitlist. UC seems to be one of those schools that likes to be honest with their applicants, so I don't think they would tell everyone that was placed on the alternate list that they are in a "special group of candidates who are at the top of our list and are rated for an acceptance as soon as openings in the class occur."

I really loved UC and its probably my top choice of the schools I'm still waiting on. Hopefully we all can end up as classmates there. Lets keep each other posted.

Crap, no email for me... It was my first interview, didn't think it went great, guess they agreed.

I guess not having the option to stay local with your S.O. is one way to avoid that awkwardly weighing in on your decision! Looks like we're just one step closer to Columbus! Go Buckeyes!

Looks like I received the same wait list e-mail as everyone else. I have to make some decisions pretty quickly so I plan to call them on Monday and see if I can get any information on my position on the waitlist.

UC is my top choice because it means being able to return to my home. But if it doesn't work out, there is always MUSC in South Carolina.

Count me in as recieving the email as well. I agree it does sound very positive, hope still shines!!!

All this makes me wonder how many people got that email - it can't be THAT many considering the phrasing. And they have been really straightforward during this whole process, so I'm thinking 30? 40 maybe? Any insights?

I was thinking there might be around 50 people in the top group. Cincy has a decent amount of movement. According to USNEWS, for the fall of 2002, they accepted 389 people and enrolled 157. So 157 was their class size and offers were given to 389 people and 232 people declined their offer from UC. Certainly people usually withdraw from schools throughout the year, but most of it occurs at this time of the year. If things go as they did last year, 232 people would have withdrawn and the people in the "top group" of the alternate list must have a damn good shot.

Waitlist movement really varies year to year so it could turn out that only 5 people for instance withdraw from UC between now and orientation. Time can only tell. Schools are not going to tell you that you are at the top of a list just to keep you interested, they must have good reason to mention that because there are so many issues involved. Besides, if not everyone got the e-mail, then maybe they e-mailed the top group ASAP to know if they are still interested because that group is supposed to get the offers before everyone else. E-mailing us allows for them to get a quicker response from us than if it were to be done via US mail. They said they will not be mailing our letters until May 15 or so, by sending an e-mail they can find out right away about what we want to do.

BTW, I am by no means trying to imply that all of us who got the e-mail will get in, but I am saying that we probably have a better than decent shot.

Did I overanalyze all of this or am I just damn excited about UC?!

Solid Gold,

I agree with you...once I thought about it, UC is not a school who would tell everyone that they are at the top of the list just to keep them interested. I bet we have a very good shot (at least that's what I like to tell myself)! So we'll just have to wait and see what happens in the next month or so.

I searched old threads on the UC waitlist...and there was a guy who got that email last year around this time and was accepted two weeks later! That's good news right!

Well all I know is that UC is awesome and I would love to go there...but I would also like to know where I will be going as soon as possible so that I can find a place and a roomate. Right now I'm holding onto one acceptance that I am happy with...but I would drop it in a second to go to UC.

Ok well good luck and I don't think you overanalyzed anymore than the rest of us did!

Good luck!

Dreamin😉

This all sounds about right to me. I've heard they have a lot of turn over to OSU and Case, and my interviewer even asked me specific questions like "Why would you choose to come here and not OSU?" It was very weird.

Anyways, here's hoping we all hear some more good news really soon! And I too, am really desperate to start apartment hunting. The waiting is killing me.

Sounds like you guys are getting pumped! Don't stress about housing, there are a ton of places that you will be able to find in the area and around town. I hope that you all get in and have no problems.

Don't sweat it too much as the waitlists move a lot this next week considering it is going to be May 15th. If you have any questions just let me know and I'll try to respond quickly, although we have tests in about a week that I'll be studying for. I do know that last year Mrs. Fooks said that they took about 1/3 of the class (minus joint program) off the waitlist and this lasted up until the week school started. So this should be around 40ish people.

I by no means am connected with the admissions office, but I would say that if you are really psyched on UC then by all means send an update to your file and let them know. It might not have any bearing on your chances, but if it does the extra 20 minutes it would take will really be worth it.

If/When accepted, UC will send you a ton (practically a book) of info about moving here, areas to live, roomate lists and lots of other goodies. I'm sure I'll be meeting plenty of you during orientation week (my real name is my user name) and at all the parties that we have. The social atmosphere is really hard to beat, which is one reason that some people prefer UC. I'm looking forward to meeting you all at the multiple social things that we do.

If you have any Q's just post them or feel free to email me personally: [email protected]

I got the e-mail too and an really trying to calm myself down from getting overly excited.. Haha, i'm so scared of getting disappointed. But I'm hoping that it is what every one is thinking and hopefully we all do have a pretty good chance of getting in. Good luck, everyone!

Kidsmd,

I know what you mean, I'm pretty excited myself, but at the same time worried as all heck. I'm trying not to get my hopes up. Here's hoping all of us hear something shortly. I hope you guys/girls get good news, and I hope I get to met all of you.

Thanks for your input/suggestions Tyson.

same email here too
if there a single person out there who has received an email from them that didnt say you are in the top group? i am guessing we all received the same email

1. I wish we could delete that message from Pinky. It sort of disturbs me a bit.

2. Theres someone on the previous page that said he didn't get the email - I wonder if as people send back the email with the reply "no wait list for me thanks!" the office fills those spots with additional people.

It really seems like a lot of people have gotten the same e-mail, but there is only 8 of us here so far that has gotten it, and 1 person who did not get it. My guess is that there is probably at least 50 people in the top group and that there will be people who decide not to participate in the alternate list, thus making the group smaller than what it started out to be. It could just be coincidence that many of us got the e-mail and happen to venture on SDN regularly.

Thanks Tyson for the info. If about 40 people got in off the alternate list, things do look pretty good. Just remember guys that there were probably more people than 40 that were extended acceptances off the waitlist because some people declined the offer before all was said and done.

Is anyone going to call the admissions office this week to find out more?? If so, please post what you learn.

To those on the UC waitlist,

I just wanted to update my good luck wishes to you all on getting in to Cincinnati. I think that if you all got that email (which sounds pretty positive), you have more than a pretty good shot at getting in and I sincerely hope you do. I agree that they probably wouldn't have sent it to you, if you weren't truly at the top of their list.

It's great to hear you all excited about Cincinnati! Though I have some pre-medical school jitters along with the nervous feeling of starting someplace new, I'm pretty excited about starting there in the Fall. With all of your enthusiasm about it, it makes me feel better too. But, that being said, I hope we're classmates one day so we can share that enthusiasm (and start forming some study groups  !) Good luck in the next couple of weeks and definitely keep posting to the list to update us all!

Well guys, I don't know if anyone here knows about this, but according to a thread last year regarding UC, there are 2 separate alternate lists, one for in-staters and another for out-of-staters. Does anyone know if this is true?

I was under the impression that they made no distinction between in-state and out-of-state at the post-interview stage. The fact that people in both categories got the same e-mail on the same day supports this.

Us out-of-staters might be at a disadvantage because we don't have home field advantage if they do have 2 lists.

I got it too! I'm so excited about this! Good luck everyone!

On my interview day one of the students asked about the waitlists and Clarice Fooks, the associate dean of admissions, said that there are seperate lists for in-state and out-of state students. She said as one spot is declined by an in-stater it is filled by an in-stater and vice versa. She said they have to keep the class at a specific ratio of in-state to out of state...I'm not exactly sure what that is.

Well, lets break down last year's numbers according to USNEWS.

Applied Interviewed Accepted Enrolled
Total: 2,105 642 389 157
In state: 884 419 288 113
Out of state: 1,221 223 101 44

Total: 61% of all those interviewed were offered an acceptance, while only 40% of them actually enrolling.

In State: 69% of those who interviewed were handed an acceptance while only 39% of them actually enrolling.

Out of State: 45% of those interviewed were offered an acceptance with only 44% of them actually enrolling.

The ratio seems to be a little over 1/3 of the class from out of state.

These numbers are not that favorable for me since I am not an OH resident. 🙁 The one thing that I do have in my favor is that there is a larger percentage of those from out of state that decline their offer. Plus, I'm supposedly at the top of another list that should be smaller than I originally thought. Good luck everyone, acceptances should start to roll in any time now really.

As one of the lucky Ohio residents, I do know from my talks at Case that schools in Ohio have to maintain at least 60% of their class from in-state to recieve state funding. And all the waitlists in Ohio work like that (trust me, since I think I'm on ALL of them!) - an in-stater declines, an offer has to go to an out-of-state student. And so forth. I still don't know if thats a good thing or a bad thing - I feel like more out-of-state people would be likely to withdraw their acceptance in favor of an in-state school of their own. But maybe thats just my lack of coffee talking this morning.

If an in-stater declines an offer, it goes to an out-of-stater, that doesn't seem right 😕 I should think that if an in-stater declines it should go to another in-stater and the same for out-of-staters. Is anyone thinking of calling the admissions office? I kinda want to call just to make sure they got my email, I don't trust computers entirely, especially with matters like these 😉

I told you I didn't have enough coffee yet. What I meant to say was -

in state declines, in state must be given offer
out of state declines, out of state must be given offer

there. Now, I'm off to the coffee maker to straighten out my brain.

Coffee, like I like my men.....dark and bitter.

I just checked my online status page and it says "We received your confirmation to be placed on our alternate list"... in case you were wondering if they received your email. 🙂

The 60% rule may not necessarily be adhered to at all of the schools. At one of my interviews at another in-state medical school I was told that Ohio medical schools have a difficult time filling their spots with Ohio residents. (Why are they starting a new medical school then you may ask?) So, to compensate, they take (and even more so recently since this "new"? trend started) more out-of-state students. I know for a fact that Ohio State does it, but I feel they do it for other reasons besides a need to fill their spots, if you get my drift.

I am an Ohio resident and I was turned down last year at all Ohio schools. I was told by Ohio State that I had stats that were shared by many of the incoming class.

Bottomline, if you're an out-of-stater, keep the hopes up!

Good luck to you all.

Cool, I was actually going to call them to make sure but its looks like I don't have to now.

Is there anyone else here that is out of state and got the e-mail from UC? In a way, I do have lots of hope because the out of state list has to be smaller than the in state one, and I am supposedly at the top of the smaller list, which probably means UC has less people in the top group of the out of state list. If my logic is correct, I actually feel somewhat lucky to be in the top group of the out of state alternate list, but we shall see.......

I'm also out of state but I have strong connections to the Cincinnati area........it's "Home". My job for the last 5 years just happens to be in the Southeast. I've got every appendage crossed. I've postponed all of my moving plans and am arranging to have all of my things put in storage. My house sold a wee bit faster than I'd planned.......ten days. If only the wait list would move so fast.

And FYI: I currently hold an acceptance to MUSC.

Stephanie

Anyone else getting anxious already? I'm trying to resist the urge to call them until next week, but I'm getting pretty antsy over here....

I feel ya loyen, I want Cinci so bad, but at the same time I don't want to get my hopes up in fear of getting let down.

I feel the same way as you guys do. I really want to get into UC and I would do just about anything for it, but I would be very happy at the place I am already accepted at and I am focusing on that right now to keep my mind off Cinci. I kinda of wish though they could tell us our individual chances of eventually getting an offer, but I guess thats really impossible since they really don't know what other people will decide on.

I was wondering if anyone else has heard back from the University of Cinncinati but did not get the e-mail that some of us here got. Was there anyone who got rejected from being on hold or anyone who was told they were going to be placed on the alternate list that was not told they were in that "special group at the top?"

I'm in state and I got the same "special group" alternate list e-mail. That's pretty weird that everybody is in the "special group."

Word has it that OSUs waitlist is moving for in-state (via email), so I figure that Cinci can't be far behind (I would think they experiance the same general movement). Still sitting on hands to avoid calling....

Anyone else on the waitlist for OSU and Case too?
