Cincinnati Waitlist?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm glad to hear that both lists are moving. I hate that every time I answer the phone...I get excited that it will be an admissions office... and then it ends up being an annoying sales call.

I withdrew my MD acceptance at UC today because I am PSTP there so good luck to all on the waitlist. Hopefully, one of you will get my spot!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi all, Iam on this out of state waitlist also!! I called last week and asked the following questions with all answers being "info unavailable"
1) How many are in this special group?
2) When should we hear?

However I did ask if this list was the same as a regular waitlist and she said the email means what it says regarding us being at the top.

I also think it would be wise not to get our hopes up too high🙄 or at least try not to expect to hear soon. I think people will hear all the way through the summer, and I dont think us being special will make it any sooner.

Any way my two cents; and good luck to everyone! Maybe to make yourself even more special you could send in updates on your application and extra letters of recommendation. 🙂

gluon

Did anyone else get the letter today? It said the exact same thing as the email, and it had a form attached that again, was the same as the email. I'm assuming that we probably don't have to send it in as well, but I probably will just in case.

I got the letter today too. I was a little bit more encouraged to see that one important sentence in nice bold letters.

You are currently in a special group of candidates who are at the top of our list and rated for an acceptance as soon as openings in the class occur. 🙂

And if what gluon wrote is right, then I guess we really are special, but I'm still focusing on the acceptance I already have.

I'm not going to bother sending in the form with the letter because I already know they have my confirmation....check the online status page.

I wish that the other schools I'm waitlisted at had a thread here that gets me excited like this one....

Anyways, does anyone have a copy of UC's 2003 residency match list? I can't seem to find one on their website, just the 2002 one.

I also got the snail mail today. I know they recieved my email form previously. I agree with SolidGold, I like the fact that they bolded the sentence about us being ranked for an acceptance. Hear's to hoping we all hear something soon!!!🙂

Unfortunately, you have to sign in to view this year's match list on the web, but I can try to post the whole text of this list if there's interest.

Hi Amy the Medical Goddess 😍, I think that all of us here waiting on Cinci would greatly appreciate it if you would be able to cut and paste the 2003 match list here so that all of us could take a look at it. I know that I am extremely interested in seeing this.🙂 Thanks!

Since you asked so nicely... 😉

Thanks Amy!

Looks like lots of people wanted to be Anesthesiologists.

SolidGold,

Are you from Miami or did you just go to school there?

DukeBluDevl02

P.S. What's your take on Miami moving to join my Blue Devils in the ACC?

P.P.S. Good luck still...keep the hopes up. Hope to see you join me and these others in Cincy.

Hey DukeBluDevl02,

I'm lived in Miami for the past 16 years and I call it my hometown despite being born in Minneapolis.

I'm all for Miami joining the ACC. It would be a great move for the football program because it would actually make the program money. Miami has lost millions because the Big East has not been a great conference for football, despite Miami being in the National Championship game for 2 straight years. For football, it would also be a great move because it would heat up the already intense rivalry against Florida State. The ACC also has some programs that are on the rise and not constant losers like Rutgers, although the ACC does have its group of sissies. The automatic win against Duke will also be nice. 😀

For basketball, its really a wash. The Big East is pretty good in basketball with teams like Syracuse, but lets face it, the ACC is probably stronger just because of Duke by themselves. Miami's b-ball program will get spanked in either conference for at least the next decade until they can get another coach like Leonard Hamilton who brought in talent good enough to at least take us to the sweet 16 like they were a few years ago.

For baseball, well, nobody at Miami cares about the baseball team despite them being a top program for years. They won the College World Series a few times in the past few years but nobody gives a damn. The team is made up of a$$holes every year so none of the students have ever wanted to pay much attention to them.

The Big East is also damn stupid. How could they let Notre Dame join the conference and make the exception that they could remain independent for football. If Notre Dame was in the Big East for football, Miami would never consider leaving the Big East. Overall, I'm all for Miami joining the ACC, mostly because of football.

I'm simply going to assume that is not a backhanded insult to my beloved alma mater (twice!), and only a comment on the intense ratings the ND games get on TV.

Go Irish.

No actually, I like the Irish and I'm a big Willingham fan. I was insulting the stupid Big East because they don't know how to run a conference.

I was actually complementing Notre Dame because if they were in the Big East for football, Miami would not want to leave because there would be another big time program. The only school right now that can rival Miami's program in the Big East is Virginia Tech, but they don't have near the name that Notre Dame has. Miami would love to play the Irish every year, but this can't happen because Notre Dame football is not in the Big East, when they are for every other sport.

Yeah, Willingham is the coolest. But after Davie for five years ANYONE would have been like a saint in this town.

I fear our schedule next year - Michigan away, FSU, etc. But there's still Navy. Thank god there's still navy.

Anywho, back to the actual thread topic - I'm planning on calling Cinci (and others) next week. Hopefully we'll get more info then.

I think Miami's move to the ACC for football would be good not just for Miami, but also for some of the lower teams in the ACC in football already (such as Duke and UNC and Wake Forest) by being able to recruit players who want to play against such schools, and actually get playing time. I'm worried about basketball because by adding to make it a 12 team conference, some of the intense rivalries in the ACC will be disrupted and may not be able to be played (Duke v. UNC or Maryland and Tech v. UNC, Wake v. NC State, etc.)

As for Notre Dame, NBC should pull that contract and make them join a conference. I don't get the idea of an independent football team.

As for this thread, my fingers are crossed for you all!

DukeBluDevl02

It's great for Duke football...well, at least for our students...we get to come out and watch some legit pro-prospects in Durham when Miami comes. Albeit, we'll be getting our asses handed to us but it's still cool to say you saw Miami play....

Cool, please let us know what you find out when you call them.

Also, out of curiousity, how many of you guys who are OH residents that are also waiting on OSU, MCO, Case or any of the other OH schools? Which one would you choose if you were accepted to all of them that you are waiting on?

Not to take away from the facinating world of football etc. (not a huge fan of Cinci football, but the basketball team is okay) but my heart will always be a UTAH fan (hey, we're good a basketball). GO UTES!!! Now.....

Where to live has come up in PM's and I'll try to address that the best I can.

One thing that I can't stress enough is that Cincinnati is very different than a lot of cities. You will have 10 houses in a row that are $1million+ and then a crackhouse on the corner, across from a 4 star restaurant. I've never quite experienced something like that. Keep this in mind while apartment hunting, as one block will look like a shi**hole, and then the next block restored victorian houses.

The school is surrounded by 3 neighborhoods. East is Avondale, south is Corryville, West is undergrad campus and Gas Light District, and North is the Zoo and Childrens Hospital. Since I am out-of-state student I will tell you my impressions so far. So where to live....

Avondale (East of UC) is pretty much a hood for about 2-3 miles, driving through is scary enough, and living there is asking for trouble. But... if you keep driving east you will run into Mt. Adams+Eden Park/ Hyde Park/Mount Lookout. All three are yuppy, fun places with a lot of bars, museums, and lots of cool town houses. If I lived permanently in Cinci, this is where I would want to live. Quite a few students live here, but these will require you to have car, and are a little more pricy in the $ range. Upside is great area, downside is traffic and driving (parking permits are around $400).

Corryville (South of UC) is like what I described above, one block great, one block not-so-hot. I live here and I can honestly say that it isn't bad at all. I haven't yet felt unsafe, and they have built many new apartments/condos in the area. The upside of this area is that it is very close to school (we all walk, males after dark okay, females not), rents are cheap, and close to grocery store, undergrad. The downside is that there are still a few bad houses that ruin it for the rest of the neighborhood. Places to consider here are The Bellevue Gardens (brand new, cheap, and directly across from UC Hospital), The Highland Commons (brand new, not so cheap, right behind Bellevue), and Piedmont Mews (actually on UC Hospital property in front of Bellevue). Bellevue has a website www.thebellevuegardens.com , this apt. complex was made for Medical Students and I have loved living here. Again, a lot of students live here.

Gaslight District (West / N. West of UC) is a charming older part of town that has tons of real gas lights (natural gas) that don't ever shut off and have been burning for something like 1000 years, they are pretty cool. This area is "safer" than Corryville, but again, I have no problems living in Corryville. The upside of this area are great older houses, real yards that are clean, $1million+houses, next to Clifton Ludlow intersection (small town center), gaslights, and clean. Dowside is that it is approximately 1.3 miles to school (yes I measured one day), and so when it isn't the best weather walking is going to be an adventure. Most likely you will drive. If you look carefully you can find great deals in this area, but like Hyde/Eden/Mt. Adams, you are going to be in the upper $ range.

The class is probably split like this...females like Gaslight because it is "Safer", males could care less. Of the class, I would say of the people that near school, 10% live Mt. Adams/Eden/Hyde (east), and 40% live in Corryville, and 30% in gaslight, the rest are randomly scattered.

My suggestion is find something very close that you can feasibly walk to school from. You will be spending a lot of time here, much more than you can imagine, so being able to go home for a nap/lunch/forgotton notecards is a huge plus. Plus if you don't know anyone, most of the action is around school and the local bars etc.

Last and not least, you should not be stressing apt hunting too early. There are tons of places and apts throughout the area and houses open up all the time. I didn't get a place until July 1st, and that was plenty of time in advance of the July 27th prematriculation program. This isn't Cali/Miami/NYC, the housing market is good and plenty of places to be had, be patient, and don't rush yourself.

Thanks for the great info Tyson! I was really not even thinking about a place to live in Cinci yet. I'm just trying to take it one step at a time, but now at least I have a quick little resource if the time ever comes for me to need it.

Tyson,

Thanks a bunch, man. That helped a lot. I also PMed Amy to get the female perspective on it (she lives in Hyde Park). So, I have a good general idea now.

I have a family friend who is a 4th year and is graduating. He lives in the Gaslight District, and he says his building is nice and that I should consider it. Since he's leaving, it might be just an easy transfer. But, I want to explore all of the options available down there and get a bunch of different opinions. In the scheme of things, the most important thing is going to be the medical school part.

One other question...how many people get roommates? I kinda have the idea that I don't want a roommate (I've lived in a dorm for four years, including fraternity--Duke doesn't have fraternity houses, only dorm sections). So, I've kinda decided that it'd be nice to try and make it on my own. But, at the same time, I don't want to be alone either, as I know no one at Cincy. What's your take on roommate situations?

Hey all, saw this advice from Cydney Foote. Probably a good idea for Cinci:

Updates definitely make a difference. Boy Wonder is exactly right -- you do want your name to be recognized (in a good way, preferably!).

Here's what happens when you're on the waitlist (at least, this is what my office did). Your file, along with the 100 other wait-listed candidates, is put in a filing cabinet in the administrator's office. Every few weeks, the top portion of the files (if they're ranked) or all the files (if they're not) are pulled out for the adcomm meeting. At this point, they're ruthless -- they have to whittle down the pile, and they do this by disposing of everybody who they don't immediately recognize -- who wants to have to read the entire file again!

Here's how to stand out -- write letters, updates on your grades, new transcripts, new letters of recommendations, whatever you can. When the administrator receives the letter, s/he circulates it around to all the adcomm members before putting it into the file. If you do a letter every 2-3 weeks, you're going to be at the top of their minds. When they get to your file (which by the way is now bigger and even more impressive), they think, "Oh yeah, I remember Moops, let's not get rid of him yet." Or better yet, they think, "Hey, he really cares about getting in here. That's the kind of med student we want!"

As for people who don't submit their final grades, if the school's have a tracking system like we had, one of the boxes that has to be checked off is "Final transcripts submitted." Some may slip through without it, but it should set off alarms.

Keep in touch with your wait-listed school and good luck!

In regards to roomates it's up in the air. How do you do with random people? When I moved here I didn't know anyone and I randomly got 2 roomates from emailing etc. While it worked out at the beginning of the year, I now have different friends and am moving in w/them this summer. I don't think that I would live w/my current roomates again just because we are different on a maturity level.

Things to ask yourself are; Do you study at home? Having roomates may make this hard if at home they only watch TV. Do you like getting up early and doing things? If your roomates bedtime is 2-3am, it'll be hard to get that done. Are you quiet/shy? Then a roomate might just be the ticket for a great time.

It really depends on you. The best thing I can say is that we save $ on rent/bills so that we don't have to take out as many loans. In the end it really is a crap shoot, and if things suck then you can always have them move out, or move yourself at the end of the year. A lot of people do have at least 1 roomate, and those that don't (even though they enjoy their places) have big $ problems.

Good luck.

One thing I was curious about, what is the time schedule for classes at Cincinnati? I don't remember hearing this at our interview day. I know that it varies by day, what is it like in general?

Also, to keep to the topic at hand...has anyone heard anything yet so far who are on the waitlists?

Hey all ... called Cinci this morning and didn't get an actual person. I feel a little silly leaving a voice mail, so I'm trying again this afternoon.

But I got a call from Ohio State this morning! I'm giddy. I'm off the waitlist train, and can now sleep soundly again knowing I'm going to med school next year. If I wasn't at work, I'd have a beer. Maybe I will anyways.

Congrats Loyen! Still pulling for you to join us at Cincinnati, though!

Oh, and you shouldn't feel silly about leaving a voicemail. I did that last week too, I wanted to make sure I was okay with everything prior to starting before I withdrew my acceptance at MCO. But, I got calls back that day and the next day too from the office telling me that I was all set...very, very nice people!

So, bottomline, don't feel silly, call and they will call you back!

Congrats loyen!! OSU is a damn fine school, but I'm assuming that UC is where you would rather go. 🙂 Let us know what you hear back from UC.

Um, I wasn't aware we had classes at UC... 😉

You can see the weekly schedule for Year I here.

Is anyone else going crazy watching all these other schools' waitlists move? I wish I knew if Cinci was calling people yet or not. Stupid waitlist be more fast!!!

Congrats to Loyen on the OSU acceptance

And it looks like we're going to have to wait some more...

I spoke to the admissions office and they said no waitlist offers would be made until June 1st, since they gave that May30th due date to the alternate list acceptance. So they're waiting for all the forms to come in before they do anything. Sigh.

And the other waitlist I'm still on isn't moving until then either. Double sigh.

Damn, that's 2 schools that I'm waiting on now that I have to wait until June for. I'm going on vacation the first half of June...I better give them my cell phone number in case they call to inform us of an acceptance.

That sucks, I'm going to be on vacation the first part of June also, I'm going to the Rockies, hope my cell can get a signal out there.

In a way, its kinda of a relief to know when to start expecting to hear things so that I'm not going crazy the rest of May. I can wait until June 1st to become neurotic again. Thanks for the info loyen.

I guess I can stop logging into the UC online status page website every 5 minutes, at least until June 1.😀

Anyone know how UC notifies people accepted off the waitlist?

On the UC Admisson's webpage they say that they notify people via a phone call

Cool, thanks!

Is UC your #1 choice, SG?

I think so, but its very close between UC and another school I'm waitlisted at, University of South Florida.

Solid,

Good luck at USF.

To those waiting still,

Keep the hopes up!

I just visited Cincinnati on Thursday to get a feel for where to live, etc. I have to tell you, I'm starting to get pretty pumped about starting this fall! It's going to be great!

I hope to see some of you there!

DukeBluDevl02

Thanks Duke, I really loved Cinci, but the chance to stay in FL and the lower tuition at USF is too great to pass up. Cinci has its advantages though as a medical school, but USF is on the up and up with some very good residency match lists the past 3 years, some that are just surprising.

Good luck to all those still waiting for Cinci and those who will be attending there in the fall.

Congrats SolidGold!

Hopefully all of us waiting on Cinci will hear something soon!

Yeah, this is killing me, watching every other school move like crazy except for Cincinnati. 🙄

Still one more week to wait before Cinci's list starts to move, and hopefully it move fast!

I'm not sure how you all should interpret this, but I thought I'd add it anyways. I figure, the more info the better.

But today I received via snail mail a letter notifying me of my rejection. I did not receive the "high status" email that many of you all received.

UC's my alma-mater, but I wrote no such letter of interest or anything like that. So one might conclude that a) no preference is given to Bearcat alum and b) letters of interest just might help. You could also conclude that they have no intent of making offers to those they did not send an email to.

Or you could also conclude that I was just so far down the list that they knew there was no chance the list was going to move that far... A continuous "good luck" to all of you!

Mellotron,

Sorry to hear that from UC. I'm happy you got into OSU though, very good school as well.

I too didn't get any alumni love (Duke University), as I went 0-2 there with zero interviews, zero acceptances, zero waitlists. But, OSU also did that for me too. I got no Buckeye love either (I've been an OSU fan since I was born a total of 23 years and counting--the first Michigan v. OSU game I saw in November 1979 was OSU all the way).

But, I'm not bitter or anything...

...Actually, I'm still more than happy and thrilled to be going to Cincy. It's a great school, great rep, and it's a bigger town than Toledo. I know there are many on the waitlist here who share my views. Going to Cincy will give me another team to cheer for come basketball season (though I still can't forgive the 1999 UC team for beating my Blue Devils at the buzzer--they play that game a lot on instant classic, but for me it was my first year of undergrad and it still brings such slight heart pains!)

So, I can proudly say GO DUKE and GO BEARCATS!

Good luck to the rest of you all still waiting, I guess, June 1st can come fast enough for you all! I'm pulling for ya'!

DukeBluDevl02

Alright, I'm getting antsy over here. On one hand, it would be nice to have options and see what happens when the Cinci waitlist moves, but then again, maybe I just want to get settled and let go of the waiting game.
Do any of you guys have a date in mind when you're going to stop waiting? I sort of feel like if June 15th rolls around, then its OSU all the way.

Just got off UVa's waitlist, so I just gave up my spot at Cincy. Hope one of you fellas gets the spot!
