You see, all you need to do is attach your cellphone to your clothes and then you're ALWAYS ready. And check your email every 10 minutes.

I hope that the list moves fast this week. I lost my cell phone temporarily today and freaked out because I've had it attached to my hand for the past month.

I'm giving this the June 1st, the waitlist should now be moving, bump. I'm hoping you all are in this week! Good luck, keep the list updated!

DukeBluDevl02

The list should, HOPEFULLY, start moving tomorrow, or at least sometime this week. And from what I understand from years previous is that Cinci typically has a good deal of movement, so hopefully we'll hear pretty quick.

So guess who got a call this morning from Cinci? Yay!

They called both my cell (left a message) and then called my parents house when I didn't return their call within an hour. I calledback, and I have one week to make up my mind - I asked about financail aid and they said that should be included in my package.

Good luck everyone and hopefully I won't be the only one today!

Congrats Loyen!!

See you in Cincinnati!!

And they've already updated my status page...that was ridiculous quick. I've just realized theres a good chance I'll get my financail aid package from both OSU and Cinci on the same day..should be interesting...

Congrats Loyen!!!

I'm waiting for you all to get in so I can start an "Official: University of Cincinnati Class of 2007" thread!

🙂

Congrats loyen

*sigh* no call for me, but on a positive note, at least the list is moving.

One more question, have any of you sent in updates to your applications? Additional LOIs or LORs, grades, anything of that sort?? I'm thinking it might've been a good idea, but kinda late at this point...

Congrats!
I'll be seeing you in Cinci and hopefully everyone at our Margarita party this fall. mmmmmmmm.....Margarita's. I bet Monique will even sample one of my frosty masterpieces!

I've sent in two updates since my interview, but thats about it. I was going to send another one at the end of this week if I didn't hear anything. I'm not in school so there were no grades or anything else (copy of my last pay stub so they can feel bad for me?).
I'm on the alternate list at Case (probably my first choice, but at long shot at best), and I've gone whole hog with them - additional LOR, a letter of intent, blah blah blah.

I didn't get a call today either, but CONGRATULATIONS! That must of been one happy phone call to get in the morning.
Anyways, I didn't send in any updates..... in hindsight, I kind of wish I did. I guess at this point, all i can do is ... BE PATIENT. 🙂

well, did anyone hear anything today. i am still waiting like some of you. Cincy is a great town. i been here for 22 years and its so much fun. i hope i get in, i am so anxious! 😱

No word here yet either.

I figure that if they are giving newly accepted students a week to decide, that maybe they will accept new rounds of people every monday in june...unless some of those students decline their acceptances earlier.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed! Good luck everyone!🙂

Mmmmmm, margarita party... that sounds fun. Of course, I'll probably be on call that night. Oh, the joys of 3rd year.

Good luck to you alternate list people!! 😉

Just wanted to warn all of you on the alternate list...

Today I walked out to my mailbox and there was a big envelope from UC admissions. I was so excited, only to open it and read:

Dear alternate,

Since you may be accepted before the start of classes, please fill out these financial aid forms...

Total disappointment...

There needs to be some kind of "WARNING this is not an acceptance" on the envelope. 😉

Bummer, I'll apologize in advance, but I laughed my a$$ off at your post....I'm sorry, the whole process is just so dang cruel!!!!

But look at the bright side, you are probably up at the top end for acceptance because they only have a finite amount of seats, and they really should be narrowing down the class within the next few weeks.

Probably one of those things that they see who fills out the forms, and then axe those that don't, thus cleaning out a few more of those files that just aren't really that interested.

Anyway, like before, fill them out and get them in ASAP, as I'm sure a proactive excited applicant looks a lot better than someone who fills them out at their leisure and then drops them off a few months late.

Good Luck and don't lose hope!

3 more days until classes end!!!!

I'm late with this because I was on vacation, but congrats loyen!

We all know you will make the right decision and choose Cinci. 😀

Just wanted to let everyone know that after I got all the info from OSU and Cinci (on the same day, no less!), OSU gave me an offer that I really can't turn down (lots of free money? Sounds good to me!).

I'm calling Cinci first thing tomorrow morning to let them know, and hopefully someone else can get that spot ASAP! Good luck everyone!

Thanks for the info TysonCook. You motivated me to fill out those forms for Cincy. This process is taking forever, but whats waiting about 2 more months to see where you're going. That's awesome that you're almost done with classes! Have a great summer!

Hey all...called the office first thing Monday to turn down the spot, and while they said thanks for letting us know, they don't make anything official until they get the letter in the mail. Which just adds a few more days to the waiting.
Don't know if that's good news/bad news, but figured I'd keep you posted.

THanks for keeping us updated! 🙂

Just wanted to let everyone know that I received a call from UCinn today arond 4:00 while I was in the movie theater glued to my cell phone. I'm in

I'm driving over to the medical school tomorrow from N. Ky to get my acceptance letter and anything else they are kind enough to provide me with.

I am an out of state resident since I've been working in SC for the last 5 years so I still have some thinking to do.

I am so excited that I may have the chance to move back home but I have to consider the difference in expense between Cincinnati and MUSC in Charleston, SC.

Just wanted to keep everyone updated. Good luck to all who are still waiting.

Stephanie

Fantastic!
I'm glad that things worked out. Before you make your decision wait for the financial aid to come through, they may help you out and it will make a difference!

Either way, congratulations and I'll see you in the fall (hopefully)!

I just got back from Cincinnati (my second trip in the past three weeks). I hope some other future first-years are around on SDN so I can talk to them (particularly you all still waiting, I hope you get in soon), I'm starting to get a tad bit nervous about this medical school thing.

Also, I didn't realize how stressful apartment looking is! Ahhhh!

Going to rest,

DBD02

Duke,

How's it going. I just let go of my spot at Ohio State on thursday, so now I'm in the same boat as you...looking for housing in Cinci. Got any advice? Did you fill out the roomate request sheet? I didn't and now I'm thinking I probably should have.

Just wanted to let you all know that I have decided to attend UC next year. I'm really excited so happy to be living in my home town again after almost a decade in the Carolinas.....guess I'm gonna learn what snow is again.

I've dealt with my hosing issues....I'm living with my parents. Gotta love the hotel of mom and dad. I will live here for at least the first year and then we'll see. The commute is about fifteen miles but I've done worse. I worked at P&G in college.....that was 35 miles. SO I guess it won't be too bad. I live in Northern Ky. by the way.

Stephanie

Yes! There are more of us! I'm going to start the Official: Cincy '07 thread!

Also, I finally found a place to live!

Oallostavros, I'm going to be living in Hyde Park. If you want some suggestions, check out the Cincy Housing Booklet. Also, if I recommend to you the place I'm going to be at, I'll get a bonus!

I didn't do a roommate thing for this year either. I've never lived in an apartment before, nor lived without a roommate for that matter (dorm all four years because Duke doesn't have fraternity houses, only sections of dorms). So, I wanted to try it for a year, and have my own private space to live and/or study when I would like to. Yeah, that means paying a little bit more (especially being in Hyde Park), but I didn't want added stresses of a bad roommate situation, nor being in a questionable building or location. Everyone says, med school is stressful enough. So, I took the advice of a whole bunch of people and kinda molded it to how I felt, and made a choice, and I really like my apartment choice. There's plenty of space to have people over for parties (and to crash), study sessions, or parties 😉 , and especially March Madness--GO DUKE and GO BEARCATS (insert undergrad/grad school of your choice)--so it'll be fun!!

But, I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and getting started.

When is everyone planning on getting to Cincinnati to move in? We all should definitely meet!

DBD02

According to the waitlist thread theres been some more movement...congrats and I'm still pulling for everybody...

I finally got off the wait list today.. I am so excited! 🙂... Now I can go apartment hunting. 🙂 Any suggestions anybody?

Congrats, kidsmd, oallostavros, and sflynn my future classmates!

At first, I was very stressed out about this housing thing. My sister lives in Columbus and I always pictured living in apartments like she always did, when it was time for me to be off to medical school. The apartments in Columbus, if you follow me, are the nice, modern, cookie-cutter apartment complexes with a swimming pool and fairly nice landscaping deals. Cincinnati, at least where the med school is, is not like that at all. It's much older. Apartments are single buildings, square, older, and in some cases kept up only minimally (depends on the company). Of course this is just my impression. But, it seemed even in the "nicer" areas there were buildings that just didn't fit. My suggestion for you is what I chose: Hyde Park. Out of the four main areas I visited at and around the school (Clifton Gaslight, Clifton Heights, Hyde Park, and Mt. Adams) I liked Hyde Park the best. It's a tad bit more than Clifton or Clifton Heights, but it's kinda a tradeoff. Well, I liked Mt. Adams too, I don't know why anyone wouldn't, but it's a little too much for a med student, maybe I'd consider living there as a doc 😉. I didn't like Clifton Heights at all, it just seemed run down, plus there are fraternities and sororities. Now, don't get me wrong. I was in a fraternity, but my med school days are going to be much different. Clifton Gaslight would be my second choice. The residential area there is very nice, but the apartment buildings are old and don't seem to be taken care of as well, again just my impression upon visiting several apartments. There's Corryville too, though most people would say to avoid that as well. I know that one of the second years here TysonCook lives there and likes it. The Bellevue Gardens and Highland Commons are both in Corryville and seem really nice to live (also seem a bit pricer for Corryville, I'm paying slightly less in Hyde Park, which seems odd to me) and seem close to those Columbus-style buildings I mentioned (ie they're more modern), but for me personally, I just wanted to be a little bit farther from the med center instead of being in the shadows of it to live. I know I will be spending a lot of time there, it'll be nice to have a place to live that's a little bit farther away, a place in a good, safe area, and quiet and removed from the med center hub bub.

But, again to each his or her own. That was just my impression of Cincinnati (after THREE visits down there, including a two-day trip). Regardless of where we all choose to live, we're all in the med school thing together and I look forward to meeting everyone and getting back into the study mode, as weird as that sounds (been out of college for one year). But, I'm so happy with my apartment choice, and I am serious about eventually throwing some parties with my new classmates! I can't wait! 😉

See you all soon, good luck with the search!

Hello,
Congrats to those that are on their way. Dukebludvl is correct, every area will speak to everyone differently. The only real advice I have for you is that you may want to consider driving as an insane bit*h. The med center is on a road that everyone drives in on, so it will be crowded most of the morning and evening.

I would very highly recommend that you live near enough to the school that you can get back and forth fairly quickly. You will spend a good deal of time at school, not just for education, but also the area is huge for parties, dinners, and general meetings. So it is a pain in the butt if you end classes at 12, and then have to drive back at 4pm for a meeting etc. Just my suggestion, but I would say look close to school. The area isn't that bad. You also have to figure in that the MSB will be under construction, so that will delay traffic as well + parking pass is $. I suggest the bellevue gardens, if you have roomates it is cheap (I pay $300/mo). I am moving this august to Clifton Heights with 4 roomates this fall, so I be more informed of that area then.

Just bought a new foosball table for the school today, hope that you like it, it is competition grade! I'll be meeting you all during your orientation (i'm in student government) and helping you ease into the new life here in Cinci.

Tyson

ps - I would also recommend doing the summer prematriculation program as well if you are "shy" or would like to get into the swing of things. I did and I was a great experience and I think that it changed my whole outlook on school. A lot of my friends that came later said that they wish they had done it as well.

Thanks for the advice guys... I really appreciate it. I feel like everything's going so fast. Just the last couple of days I was going crazy looking for places in philadelphia and then today, everything got shifted to cincinnati (which I'm happy about). Yeah, I think living close to school would be important to me since I imagine I'm the type of person who would like to go back and forth between school, but then I'd also like a nice place too. I guess we will see. 🙂

Hey guys! I was accepted off the waiting list late last week. Woot woot!

Thanks to TysonCook and DukeBluDevl for the housing info. It's really helpful to picture different areas, not just a list of places that UC gives us. It's nice that the school cares enough to send us a housing handbook though.

I'm not going to be able to go to Cincinnati to look for housing until a couple of weeks from now, so right now I'm just looking on-line and calling around. I know I'll need to act fast.

Would anybody who has been accepted off the waitlist care to share thier vital stats. I'm applying to UC this year and want to see if I am competitive.

I'm non-trad with a post bacc GPA of 4.0 (spread over 32 hours) which included all of the prereqs, but an undergrad science gpa of 2.81 (spread over 17 hours)--earned way back when I was stupid. Which means that when amcas calculates the cummulative undergrad GPA (which inexplicably includes my post bacc work that I took almost 8 years after udergrad) it is only about 3.45--with, admittedly, an insane upward trend.

MCAT was 30Q (10,10,10,Q).

What do you think?

Judd

Jalan2: what housing sites have you been looking at? I haven't been able to find very much online so far and I haven't received the housing handbook either....

juddson,

I'm by no means an expert on this, but your stats (upward trend, good MCAT) look promising. How about other things like your extracurriculars? Are you an in-stater? I'm also a non-trad with 3.8 GPA and 32O MCAT, extracurriculars, & work experiences. I'm out of state. Good luck... 🙂

kidsmd,

Bellevue Gardens that TysonCook mentioned has a website that he posted several posts back in this thread. The handbook suggests apartmentguide.com, where I could not even find a lot of the apts that the handbook listed. But when I looked Rent.com, it had Piedmont Mews and Highland Commons. All these apts are in the Corryville area.

The housing handbook was the first thing that I got from UC. I still haven't received the Fin Aid package yet. Have you?

-j2

jalan 2,
Thanks for the reply. 🙂 I just got accepted on Wednesday so I haven't received anything yet... so still waiting for my big packet!

Here are a couple of tricks I learned while looking for a place in Cinci. Online sites are okay, but tend to be dated and not the best picture of what to expect. The housing guide is good, but if you have any questions please ask here or just call the admissions office (everyone is very nice). Also the classifieds can be searched by going to www.cincinnati.com (the Enquirer).

The biggest trick I had was (if possible)... Take a weekend and come to town. Start driving and use your cell phone to call on the apts that have signs out front. I would say that around 75% of all open apartments are not listed. With Xavier and UC so near to each other, most landlords wait until the apt opens up and then just puts a sign in the front yard. We spent about 3 days just driving in the areas looking around and came up w/about 25 places to look at, while the paper only had about 5-10 listings for the same area.

Hope that this helps and if you really start getting stressed I get emails quite a bit from UCI-IV asking for potential rommies, I can forward the info to those are really freaking.

Keep rocking and get psyched for the new year (minus any construction woes) 🙂

Hi,

I just got in a couple of weeks ago and am very excited to go to Cincinnati! I am from out of state and have many housing questions too. Do you guys know if most people live with someone their first year or not? What are all you doing? Congrats to everyone that got in  !

I'm in state.

And yet I don't know. Average MCAT was 29.9 (or something like that) for 2002. But certain things need to be taken into account. The first is the 30% or so of the out-of staters who would be posting better numbers--say 32's on average is my guess. That drives the instate average down. BUT, you also have to take into account the URM numbers, which account for something like 15% of the class.

So where does that put the target number for an in-stater like me who happens to be white?

And, it's even more complicated than that. The 29.9 number is for matriculating students. Seeing as how they accept about 400, but only 160 or so are enrolled--it stands to reason that the 240 who decided NOT to go to UC chose to go to a school with higher numbers (in the agregate), which means they probably had higher numbers than the numbers of those who matriculated. This means that the matriculated MACT number is LOWER than the MCAT number associated with acceptance.

It's all very complicated.

It would be nice to know what sort of numbers the folks in this thread had who got in off the waitlist. And whether they are in-state.

Judd

Judson:
Well, I am an out of stater, but I'm probably one that pulls the average down. I had a 29 MCAT and a 3.6 GPA. I'm asian so I probably have no advantage in terms of URM status. I would think that the fact that you had an upward trend would say something. I would imagine it'd come down to what kind of extracurriculars you were involved in, but who knows.

mon25: I'm still undecided as to whether or not to have a roommate. On the one hand, it'd be nice to have someone there in a new city and all.... on the other hand, it'd be kind of nice to have my own place. Ah, decisions, decisions.

Good luck to all of you waiting, and congrats to those accepted.
I hope one of you gets my spot that I gave up. I spent the past four years in Cincinnati for undergrad and think you guys will enjoy it. Tyson put his view on another message, but I have a little different take on housing. If I was going to UC, I would look in Hyde Park. Sure you may pay a little more, but you can find a nice one bedroom between 550 and 600 within two blocks of Hyde Park square. It is very nice. Many people are out running, shopping, etc. in a safe atmosphere. Driving to school isn't bad either. Take Dana to Victory to Gilbert to MLK and you're there. Absolutely no interstate driving. If that is too expensive, Oakley is nice and a little cheaper and adjacent to Hyde Park. Once again it is safe. Coreyville and area around UC are shady. As long as you are smart your should be safe, but that doesn't mean your car won't be broken into. If you are looking for no driving, then yes burnett or the surrounding area may be for you. I know it is hard to know where to live in a new city. That's why it is important to consider many points of view. So if you want safety, you may have to drive, but that is just my opinion. I hope it helps. And good luck.

I just want to say congratulations to everyone getting off the waitlist. It looks like there's a few people on SDN coming to UC this year, so maybe you guys will be friends before you even arrive. 🙂 Good luck to you all!!

Judd,

You've really done your math! I agree with your reasoning. I would guess that the out of staters and the URMs cancel each other out for the most part. Good point about accepted vs matriculated students avg MCAT too. Although all these computations do make good sense mathematically, I would think and hope that the admissions committee looks at other factors, and I think they do. For instance, a friend of mine had a 3.7 from a tough school and 32 MCAT but was rejected from Cincinnati this year, and I'm pretty sure it was because of a lack of healthcare related and volunteer extracurriculars, or perhaps a bad interview day. So, I wouldn't overanalyze numbers too much. My guess is that if you have a 28 or higher MCAT with an average GPA, and everything else is fine, then you're in the ballpark, and they'll probably look at other aspects of your application to make their final decision. Good luck. PM me if you want to talk more about it.
