i remember someone posting how we can claim some of our expenses during the applcation cycle in our taxes...anyone else recall this and what exactly we can claim?

i don't think they do but just want to double check since most of you are in the same position.

are you filing yourself? or are you a dependent?
i'm pretty positive you can't claim the application fee. however, depending on how confident you or your parents feel about an IRS audit, there is a way.
on your credit card, the payment shows as being made to the adea, and in the detail it notes "non-profit organization" or something like philanthropic org - i don't remember. at any rate, you can claim it as a charitable donation to the adea. there is no way to tell it was a fee, and it's not going to flag your return for audit. but if you're being audited for some other reason, then then it may surface that it was a fee, not a donation.
also, just be smart about it. if your dad has $40K income and is making a $2K donation to the adea, it looks quite odd. but if your family makes more money and contributes other donations then you're good to go.

Legally, you cannot claim the expenses from the application and interviews on your taxes. As this poster showed, there are ways to work the system, but if audited, your toast! The minimal money you gain is not worth the overall risk. What are the chances or being audited - not high. But if you are audited, they will check up to seven years prior. That means once you become a dentist and fall within the higher income brackets where you are more likely to get audited, you risk getting caught for that little bit of a deduction you would get as this poster suggested.

Wow this really helps!! THANK YOU for the quick and helpful posts!!

i will file as an independent since i'm out of school and working full time. This advice was still helpful though. I will double check with our accountant but just wanted to get some feedback now as well. I agree though i don't think it's worth the risk if you can't straight up claim it.

Thanks again you two!!

I'm impressed, you've recommended tax fraud to someone and only on your sixth post!

BTW, none of those expenses are deductible. If you do a search on deduction you will see numerous threads discussing the issue

I tried to deduct these expenses as well and my accountant said, they can not be deducted. I was heart broken
