I was just wondering how other schools compared to mine as far as EM interest. Last year our school only had ~4.5% of students going into EM, but for the Class of 2013 we have at least 10% wanting EM, with several more deciding between EM and something else. I don't know about the group getting ready to match.

Was just curious if anyone else is seeing this kind of increased interest? I know that EM is supposedly becoming more competitive.

For the past few years our school has been matching 10-11% of the class into EM...I'm applying this year and it definitely seems like more people are interested in the the specialty.

We had 13-14% last year. I think around the same this year.
For whatever reason, it's becoming a more popular option.
Maybe just less people going into the things that would suck up a lot of students in the past. (ie. gen surg, med, whatever)

A lot of people I talk to are in that same situation trying to decide Surgery vs EM or Medicine vs EM.

For my class (2013) right now we have approximately 1/6 planning on EM... we'll see how many of those change in the last months of Med 3 This is up almost 50% from last year. Makes me kind of nervous about how competitive the next match will be.

We're seeing increased interest too, but it's still early and a lot of these folks haven't yet rotated through EM. Everything is becoming more competitive as the applicant pool continues to grow respective to the relatively stagnant pool of training spots. That being said, I don't think you can talk about EM being anywhere near the competitiveness of fields such as Derm, Ortho, Plastics, Rads, ENT, Uro, Rad Onc, etc...

IMHO.

My current class (2012) is 8.5%. I just polled the soon to be MS4s and I have received replies from 13% of the class indicating that they are planning or thinking about EM as a choice. Typically, of the 200 in each class, somewhere between 14-20 students end up choosing EM, this year were right in the middle of that...

we've been all over the map the last 3 years. a high of almost 20% a few years back, last year 5%, this year about 10%.

I think we're about 3-4% this year (c/o 2012). But we don't have a program, so maybe that's why.

For UCLA, last year it was ~5-6 people, this year it is ~18-20 people, and judging from the crowd that the EM crew gathered during the session where the EM MS-4s advise the current MS-3s, probably will be similar this year as well. Not sure why the jump.
