Class of 2013!!!

My mom is just mad that I'm not going to Harvard, cause it totally ruins her bragging to her friends...both my older sisters went to ivy-level schools and I didn't (never mind the fact that I had to move to a new country and learn a new language at 13 and that it kinda screwed up my high school grades a bit), and while one sister ended up not using her degree cause she found it boring and the other never actually graduated, I'm the one that has the problem cause she didn't go to Harvard. Nor am I going to Harvard (or Hopkins, or another one of those "everyone has heard of it" med schools) next year.

Sigh....parents.

But your alma mater is a REALLY good school, and Vandy is an awesome med school...

Actually I met an orthopod during winter break who did his ortho residency at JHU 😱 and when I told him I interviewed at Vandy, he told me, WHAT! Vanderbilt is such a low tier school... why would you ever wanna go there... I did not have the heart to correct him since he teaches at UCLA and knows a few people on the adcom 😳

LET, you belong where YOU feel you belong... and I'm sure you've made (or will make) the right choice..
who cares if its known to the general public? when mom tacks on the "such and such Medical School" I think they'll get the idea 🙂

anyone watching the GMAC bowl? That's the rain that came through here this afternoon. Its still raining a bit... but 67 inches a year of rain is a good reason why I'm NOT going to South Alabama in Mobile for med school.

I hate rain.

Oh, and thanks guys! I think that sounded a lot more bitter than it should have. I'm really pretty used to it, and am totally proud of myself and I loved my undergrad experience and wouldn't change it for the world. Everything happens for a reason!

Why do you have a picture of funkmonk's mom in your avatar?

Oh no you didn't:caution:

My mom is a tiny 5'4'' Indian woman...haha... which explains why I am not that tall... but then again, my grandmother is 4'11''...stupid short Indian genes...

Where did you emigrate from?

What?! Everyone has heard of Vanderbilt!!!

Italy. I spent about half the year in South America and half the year in Italy (spent every summer break and winter break in Colombia, spent the rest of the year in Italy) until I was 13.

That is very different...why the geographic disparities...if you do not mind sharing?

That sounds like a pretty exotic childhood!

That is true... I used to think it was cool that I lived in the Philippines and in the Caribbean, but you have got me beat.

Yeah, my mom was in awe that I even applied to Vandy. Simultaneously disappointed/relieved when I got my rejection letter (its further away than she would have preferred me to go)

We are lucky if we get 6.7 inches of rain:laugh:

Sweet you speak Spanish AND Italian?

Hehe yeah. You should see my family at dinner. We switch between the three languages every few words and don't even notice.

It was really fun! It's nice to grow up with a couple of cultures, makes life more interesting.

Hmmm well one of my parents is from Colombia, and the other was Italian. In order to spend enough time with grandparents and cousins and such from both sides, I had to travel a lot. As for the US move, I had a pretty major family tragedy and we moved to the US because the economy is (was) much better here than in Italy and there is (was?) much more opportunity for work and education and such.

Vanderbilt ain't no schlump either...

If you have a "sh*tty academic record" then are your parents and siblings super geniuses?

Actually, yeah, they make me look pretty dumb. Sad to say. My sister's in the top 18 people in her class at an Ivy.

Silly overachieving families 😉

I am sorry to hear that. But I am sure there are many med schools, and future patients that are glad that you came to the US!👍

😱
But is she premed... that is the major question...

Bring on the South!

I'm really curious to see if you'll be saying that after you move here...I feel like Californians are more likely to mind the south than southerners are to mind California. But I'm rather biased because of my own experiences.

I don't mind the South, personally, but I could see why Californians might not like it...

Just my $0.02.

Ooh I'm definitely not a Californian, though. I moved here last year. I lived in a couple of parts of the east coast before then (New York and Boston). I'm sure the South will be totally shocking and different but I actually really look forward to it. The Republicans scare me a little though. So far I've lived in the most liberal, educated bubbles in the US so that will be really different.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME! I would love to go to the South...My dad did his masters at UT (He still likes his Vols)... The South just hates me... Vandy Waitlist... Emory Cold Shoulder... UNC Rejection....Oh well, I have UVA to look forward to! Hopefully I can come back in a month and put UVA acceptance😀
