Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
:meanie: We did it on purpose

Sheesh! I totally thought you guys wouldn't be getting there until tomorrow. I guess I should've expected some serious underhanded post-padding...

Which reminds me, berk... how exactly are you "moderating" these boards... when you're always here or at the water cooler post-padding? :meanie:

Ohh no you didn't! I moderate the forums just fine, thank you very much. But shhh! Don't tell my bosses I'm always here.

Night CRB! Night Spurs! (I love you guys too or I wouldn't spend so much time here 😛)

I guess it's time for me to leave too. G'night anyone who's still around!

Not enough snow for a snow day🙁.

So I declare my own, personal, snow day.

2 HOURS?! That's like a full game of tennis to me.

two hrs at the gym? wow!!

my ankle is killing me.

Two hours at the gym seems completely standard by my count. I usually need to shower after all of my workouts though. But still...I say if I go swimming, im in the pool for at least 30-60min.
If im running/cycling, thats a good hour as well...same with weightlifting.
Well okay, I guess two hours does sound like a bit much.
What does one do in those two hours???

I spent about an hour doing weightlifting stuff and an hour doing cardio stuff. It felt good, actually. It's depressing that I'll be lucky to have an hour to do the same stuff in medical school. I really am starting to like working out even though I've only been doing it for a week and a half.

And just a general request to this thread: PLEASE stop the blatant post-padding if at all possible. It's frustrating when you miss 3 whole pages of...nothing at all.

haha there was some serious post padding going on last night

morning peeps! i need to get back on sdn more, misssing out on way too much!

With all the ice on the ground today, campus is CLOSED!

The roads aren't paved yet, so it's like a death trap outside. I almost skidded out twice on my way to work 😱

On the other hand, I learned some new multi-lingual tongue twisters now 😛

Haha, yeah they were cool. And the Turkish/Urdu/Hindi discussion was pretty interesting.

But one word posts = 😱

Pianola, you teach for Kaplan, right? How long have you been doing it?

I started my first class last night (Physics I) and it was going decently well until I was going over that passage about Rutherford's experiment, backscattering alpha particles, etc. (I dunno if you remember that one) and someone asked me a question I wasn't expecting. I totally froze up and stammered through some BS for 5 minutes, but I could tell some of the students were thinking "this guy doesn't know what he's doing."

Teaching is a rough gig ><

I forgot to tell you guys I got a tutoring job -- but not with Kaplan. I didn't feel like auditioning hehe. It's for K-12th grade so I'm not too worried about any students or bosses being on here 😆 I do SAT, AP Bio & school work -- aka I'm a BS master

Yeah, I'm thinking I should have opted for something easier than MCAT. I can do algebra in my sleep, lol.

but you prob get paid a bit more since physics is so hard. The average person can't teach it

Yay for tutoring. I definitely prefer teaching one-on-one to teaching a class. And I love teaching children.

And also I like teaching areas I know something about, which unfortunately doesn't include the MCAT more times than I would care to admit 😉.

PMed you with a VERY long PM aznb0y, haha. I have to think there are lots of things that are easier to teach than the MCAT 😛.

I liked my place too because they only needed 20 hours for training & I think kaplan wanted 4 weeks or something.

Haha, a pay raise would be nice 😉.

I get paid minimum wage for a good 55% of what I do.

Starting rate is only $2 more for MCAT than SAT up here 🙁

 Ain't that the truth.

Seriously. I'm prepping at least twice as long as the lesson is supposed to go for. For that, I collect a handsome $7.15 per hour.

Wow, I think it's a lot more than SAT here. But I guess I'm not sure just how much SAT pays. I know I get $2 more than GRE...

Yessir. I can't charge for all the time I take to prep, but I'm also not gonna go up there and do a crappy job for my students. I gotcha beat by a whopping 6 cents. $7.21. Oh and the other day I spent about 50 minutes answering a billion student question. I'll make some fraction of $7 for all of that work.

I don't get paid for prep time which pisses me off... but my prep time is only 20 minutes per class, maybe 30 until i get more comfortable.

I'm reading PS and I feel bad because I am kind of ripping apart some of these statements. Maybe they are just sending me first drafts or something but I feel bad for leaving so many comments.

Haha, don't feel bad about ripping them apart. In the end, if they make the corrections, they will appreciate your help. I mean that's what we all did with our PSes before we applied, right? --> ripped them apart, right? I went through three distinct versions (different thoughts and ideas in each one) with multiple drafts of each version.

I got plenty of harsh criticism from my sister about all of the drafts. But in the end I was so happy with what I had. I mean, I really just improved it a ton between beginning and end. It's totally worth it to put in the effort. I actually am able to look back at my PS and I'm really really proud at what came out of a ton of criticism. I think it's a reasonably honest appraisal of who I am and why I'm applying to medical school -- nothing gimmicky, none of the "what do ADCOMs want to hear" nonsense.

agreed. I feel the same about mine. Maybe my style is just different because I've only come across 1 or 2 that I thought were close to ready... or it could be the time of the year since most are sending me first drafts 🙁 annoying

I like your creativity yoda

Damn, I just got pwned.

Yeah. I guess someone has to edit the first draft 😛. They're just lucky it's you 😉.

I think my style is probably different from most. I felt what I wrote was pretty different from the stock essays I read in the Princeton Essays book or the Kaplan Essays book. I didn't try to make any grandiose claims about my abilities or motivation for going into medicine. There was no "Give me medicine or give me death" part. But I guess it worked 😛.

I think after reading SDN, I was kind of worried I'd be denied on the spot if my PS was anything less than "I will sacrifice my first born if I am allowed to practice." 😉

I haven't gotten that many to read (like 5 or 6 so far) but I feel like they've been steadily declining in quality for some reason

The ones I don't like, I definitely tear them a new one because ultimately it doesn't help them if you just nod and say it's good. Brutal honesty is the best medicine, I always say. 😀

Pianola, please do not make fun of my PS... it is very rude and insensitive...🙁

Yeah, the ones that are usually bad have some kind of variation on this theme. Like medicine is some kind of romantic notion that they're infatuated with. BORING.

. . .

Research pays better. Stop encouraging the neurotics and make some $$$!!

I have a full-time research job during the day. I just do the teaching thing on the side (2 nights a week). Booyah!
