Wow, seems like everyone in California is pre-med...

How's everyone's day been so far? I just got to work and my boss isn't here (yay!) so I get to do some work.

I finished Tulane and NYU this past weekend, and now all I'm missing (of the schools I have already) is UCSD...the 10,000 character autobiography. Ouch!!

What are you all up to? Anything exciting happen? 😀

Well this morning in the NICU was phenomenal. Two sets of twins, 23 weekers and 35 weekers. Cute kids. The 23's are struggling, but doing well all things considering. It's amazing the difference in size between the two sets.

My attending is trying to arrange for me to go to real grand rounds at our state hospital NICU - the only tertiary care unit around. He's close to the head of the dept and often goes up there to learn himself. That will be super cool 👍

In other news, I sent South Alabama's secondary off today. 1/2 way there! (Three down, three i'm still waiting on).

Don't you just hate waiting on secondaries? I feel like I'm just spinning my wheels over here. 😡
 
Hey everyone! Just wanted to let you all know that I'm in New York this week and so I won't be able to be around as much as usual. I'll probably be able to pop in about once a day to say "hi," though!

So this is my daily hello! 👍

Hey all!

I went out today after work and bought my first real suit, AND a pair of nice heels, AND a pair of (fake) pearls. I figured I'd hurry interview karma along by being totally ready in case I get one at some point. Hopefully I look neither immature or old. Suits are hard to buy....

How were your days?

Ooh, that reminds me. I have to go get my suit pressed and/or dry cleaned.

I had a reasonably painless day today. How about you?
 
Grrrr I'm jealous chad! Lucky you in NY.

I'm setting up my shadowing at our tertiary care hospital NICU. So excited about that. It's going to be early september by the time I can get my orientation and stuff in. Gotta have fingerprints, TB test, etc (which I have all that but still must attend orientation at the next hospital).

Ahhhhh real grand rounds!!!

Suits ARE a challenge. I have a "summer" suit that I didn't get to wear last year, here's hoping for september interviews!

I finished all the secondaries that I've received last night- 13/15, whoo hoo! I'm now filling out the AACOMAS... I want to add 3 osteopathic schools to really round out my application 🙂

All this suit talk is getting me excited... I'm going home next weekend and am going to try to convince my mom to take me shopping!

I hate shoping, especially for something so important (and foreign) to me as a good suit. I just went to Men's Warehouse and told them what I wanted. They're good at picking out 3-4 different choices for everything (coat, slacks, tie, shirt, belt, shoes, etc.) and getting a feel for what you like. They also weren't afraid to let me know that, yes, that shirt does look good, but it won't work with the suit you picked out.

Yeah, it costs more, but it was worth it knowing that I wasn't going to make some grand faux pas without knowing it.
 
GAH! I just went to go and rework my PS for DO schools and noticed that I have one of those stupid upside-down question marks in my allo PS. Gah. I became aware of them when I was doing my secondaries ad hopefully have avoided most but I'm really bummed to see even one in my PS. I'm guessing that this happens often and shouldn't affect me too negatively... but I'm pissed at myself for not catching it!
 
Hey all!

BassPlease, I wouldn't worry. Almost everyone's PS will have something like that, it's unavoidable.

I have a full research day today so I'm super busy, and since of course when it rains it pours, I got like a zillion secondaries in the past couple of days. I'm still sitting on UCSD, sucked it up and got through UCLA's NINE essays last night, and today I got Duke and Stanford. Sigh...

Planning on getting Stanford done tonight, starting Duke, and really I need to work on that autobiography...

how are y'all doing with secondaries? About done? About READY to be done?

I'm expecting to finish in August, if my last three schools will cooperate! Finishing up my last 2 weeks at my summer job and getting ready to transfer back to admissions.

In other news, we got 4 inches of rain in 30 minutes yesterday. the flooding was awful. the afternoon's grand total sat at about 5.5 inches for 1.5 to 2 hours. Eek! And that was just an afternoon thunderstorm!!

Now that I've caught up with the majority of my secondaries (27 of 33), I'm back. Just waiting on Emory, and the final 5 schools screen so I haven't touched anything.

Annoying thing is that I can't even request my LORs to be sent out until tomorrow, August 1st. Penn seems to be doing their own thing, even though I submitted my first secondary on 7/2.. waiting a long time to be complete!

Sounds yucky! I just got my wisdom teeth out this morning and I can't take any pain meds besides tylenol and it hurrrrrrrrrrrts! 😱 No secondary writing for me today.
 
One of my friends dared me to post my Step 1 score on a pre-allo forum.

So, I did. :meanie:

Medicine is a long road that begins with med school (grad school, in my case), then internship, residency, fellowships, and endless board certification exams and re-certification exams.

Yeah, I had a rough experience too. The doc actually left a little piece of one in there and I can feel it with my tongue. That kinda pisses me off a little.

Oh yeah, and I only got Tylenol for the pain too. I feel for ya...
 
Another secondary (Alabama) arrived today! YAY!! Down to 2 I'm waiting on, just TN schools.

Hopefully I can get this one sent in tonight. Gotta crop a good picture off facebook. LOL.

What's up CO 2013 hopefuls. Just sitting at work...got tired of looking at HIV labs (depressing usually...at least for people in my study)...so I figured I would check in and give a SHOUT OUT!

That's my favorite "fake medicine" show! My best friend and I started watching it two years ago and we're now on season 9. Who are your favorite characters? I love Elizabeth Corday - she's got the sexiest accent and that curly hair! 😍

Haha well growing up I was all about Dr. Ross (hi, he looks like that AND he's all passionate about children?!). I haven't seen too many of the newer episodes, but Kovac was always pretty hot, in a tortured foreign guy sort of way. And Dr. Carter is just awesome. Still on season 3 though!
 
Ladies and gentlemen, I am DONE with the UCSD secondary!!!

Only Duke to go, and then I'll be done with all the stuff hanging over my head. Hopefully I can get Duke done this weekend.

Sigh, so ready for the ball to be in ANYONE ELSE's court for a change...

also, I'm pretty sure that for the next few months at least I'll never think about my feelings, motivations, dreams, struggles, ethical dilemmas, and aspirations again. I just...I'm out. Bring me pizza, beer, and a dumb movie and I'll be a happy girl. I just don't want to think so damn hard for a while.

I've been in love with Dr. Carter since I was about 9 years old! I started watching ER with my mother when I was in 2nd grade, and it was my very favorite show all the way up through high school. Ahh, quality television...

Heh, I just had my wisdom teeth out last week! I wanted to leave them in for the MCAT, because they helped give me perspective on the writing section...

Haha, why of course!

I feel much better today, though.. last night was very rough.

But I had a good day, I got an interview invite at UK 😀 and wrote the Case "personal adversity" essay that's been looming over my head along with my Northwestern secondary (although these may have been questionable quality) and submitted both!
 
It will be a good day when all of these secondaries are done. Then its on to just crying, no writing and crying 😉

Morning 2013! How are those secondaries coming along? Going good for me, just working on Morehouse right now. I actually need to get crackin' on Michigan State cuz it is due on friday. My only issue with Michigan State is the OOS cost, I saw somewhere $87,000 😱:scared:😱. So I don't know.
 
Just got another secondary sent off, complete with LORS. Woohoo! 🙂

It's my last week working in Financial Aid!! YAY!! 4 days... 36 hours. Beyond excited.
