Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I love DC. I especially love Howard! Ha!

Wassup Riceman. How you livin?

"How you livin?...what?...how you livin?...what?....IN LIVIN COLOR!...You can do what you wanna doooooo in livin color!"

LOL I could not help it!

I'm just trying to keep myself busy so I do not continue to stress over this process!

You heading out here to the east coast sometime soon?

Ouch that sucks. Well, just try to wash your hands obsessively, and you will be fine since HepA is oral fecal route of transmission... And on second thought, maybe you should boil the bottled water and then drink it, just to be on the safe side.
That won't help if there is no clean water there.

Hopefully, In Jesus Name, I will be out in DC in May for school.

Have you made any progress on where you are going for school?

Hey guys...is anyone still looking for something fun to do this summer?

So it turns out that I am going to be working as a "Faculty Advisor" for the National Youth Leadership Forum - In Medicine (NYLF) for one month and was wondering if any of you guys might be interested in applying. Assuming my background and reference checks are fine I will be at the Boston site; however, they have sites throughout the country (DC, San Francisco, LA, Houston, Chicago, etc....).

My commitment will be from June 8 - July 7th or June 15 - July 14th (there are dates throughout the summer). You get PAID $400 for training and $1350 per 10 day program....it's pretty sweet...and most importantly you get to help introduce aspects of medicine/medical school to high school kids

Here's the website just in case you are interested in applying:

Heh, this summer is going to consist of lots of sleep, spending time w/ Ms. Spurs, video games, and road trips 🙂 Seems like a neat program, though!

Right I am not sure where I will end up for school (I have not completely narrowed down my current options), but I am waiting to hear back from 4 more schools (two of which I never ever ever thought I would be in the running to be accepted).

Man I am praying for you!

I did NYLF when I was in my Postbacc at Davis. It was a lot of fun. Some of the kids are spoiled brats and dont realize what they had and the experience they were receiving, but nonetheless, we had fun teaching them the different aspects of medicine. I really liked teaching the medical ethics portion.

I wouldn't worry too much about it - I've been abroad several times to developing countries. The first few I didn't get Hep A either - although the big problem in those was Malaria, don't want to fool around with that! Just wash your hands and you'll be fine.

Now boiling bottled water is probably way over the top (and good luck having access to something that will boil it 24/7!)... we always provided bottled water on our missions for use and had no problems (except when we almost ran out once!)

I am out of the car market 🙁 I do not have enough money to both buy a car AND pay for the insurance at this point in life. How depressing.

Hopefully I can get some kind of employment this summer.

Maybe he can be singing in the rain whilst he runs to cheer himself up 😛

Does nobody have an umbrella these days?
That reminds me of the music video where Usher dances in the rain and I don't know why:shrug:

I kind of figured some would be bratty. I remember doing 2 programs like that in summer (for govt and law) and my parents shelling out $2000 per program for me just to attend.

I am definitely looking forward to it b/c this time I will be on the other side of the ball

that's a good idea!!!

Hey...I might be your classmate next year

did you sell your car. i was also thinking about getting a car but i was thinking maybe i don't need one in the first two years and that way i can save the money

YUCK, funky... running in the rain 👎

B-b-but running in the rain is fun!!!

Well, it's fun in the summer if it's a light rain. Winter rain or summer driving rain aren't much fun.

Actually, I take that back. Torrential rain is awesome!

(As long as you don't get struck by lightning.)

Oh man, yes!

Summer rain=fun. Winter rain=sucks.

No, I have never owned a car. I have been forced to rely on others, but it is not exactly something I am happy about.

That won't help if there is no clean water there.

Well fortunately there will be bottled water that we can buy (which is bottled elsewhere - I'm pretty sure it's a name brand like Aquafina or Dasani or something along those lines) so I'm hoping it's not much of an issue. I think the biggest threat for me will be contaminated food.

EDIT: 10 posts and counting!!!!

I prefer winter rain. Summer rain = thunder, lightening, 70 mph winds, and other things I generally don't approve of (hail, tornadoes).

I just simultaneously sneezed and bit my tongue. UGH.

Oh cmon, who doesn't like listening to a good thunderstorm (from indoors, of course)? Especially if you can curl up next to someone special to ride the storm out with 🙂

Ouch. That sounds pretty painful!

One of my absolute worst fears since childhood is thunderstorms. Think I was partially traumatized by the culmination of several hurricanes. 👎

A little bit of thunder is OK. No lightening, wind, hail, tornadoes. UGH. Make my stomach hurt. 🙁

I suppose that would make sense... I guess we don't usually have to worry about tornadoes and hurricanes here in San Antonio.

I said running in the COLD rain... I love running in the rain when it is warm... I just don't wanna get sick during finals, which is next week😱

Ahh, oki!

Ooh, I just found out I can get an immunoglobulin injection to protect me against HepA short-term...

Now I just have to find a pharmacy that has some!

So how long is that supposed to cover you?

I don't think I could live without my car, it's a scary though:scared:.

It's good for at least two weeks. For frequent travelers who need protection against HepA immediately, you can get the immunoglobulin injection in conjunction with the vaccine (which takes two to four weeks to become effective). EDIT: Just found a source online that says it stays effective for 1-2 months post-injection.

I'm hoping I can just get the immunoglobulin injection (and I'm hoping it doesn't cost an arm and a leg). I think I found a pharmacy that will have it but I'm waiting for the lady to call me back. It's a "travel medicine" clinic in a local hospital. :xf:

Is the combo a no-go or did you just get the vaccination?

Back in early January...phone call!

Awesome! I was kind of a slacker about checking SDN back in Jan, so maybe that's why I didn't know 😳

Oooh, a phone call! I want one!👍😀

Hehe it's pretty cool... the only thing was, it was such a short, 45 second conversation that I had trouble convincing myself that it actually happened until I got the official letter the following week 😀

Haha awww. No status page to obsess over?😀

I haven't gotten anything yet. I probably won't get the vaccination just for this trip - the immunoglobulin is really what I need. If I ever went back then I'd make sure to get the vaccination.

Ahhh, ok! The CDC seems to think you should get one when you reach the grand old age of one, though.:laugh:

Haha, there WAS a status page and lots of people obsessed while waiting for an interview, but it wound up being useless for acceptances... I still don't think mine has changed!

Ha! That's terrible!

But now you know! And knowing is awesome!

...Or half the battle.

...Whichever.

OH I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND :scared::scared::scared:. When I was in undergrad at Rice I would NOT go to class if there was lightning and thunder outside. One time I actually e-mailed my scientific spanish professor and let him know I was so scared of lightening and thunder that I did not want to go to class that day (since it was really bad outside)...yeah pathetic...but I'm a cali kid...lightning and thunder is practically unheard of in Los Angeles.

One time I had to move my car out of the parking lot in front of my dorm but refused until the lightening stopped. I would have gotten a ticket, but my friend moved it for me.

Oooh good luck with that! Stay well, Chad.

NVM. Found this article on Hep A that made me retract the first part of this post: http://health.nytimes.com/health/guides/disease/hepatitis-a/overview.html?inline=nyt-classifier

YAY! Someone who understands! I will get out in it if I have to, but I'll check the radar and time my driving around when the bad stuff is coming for sure.

I think that is why I did not apply to that many schools down south. My boss was trying to tell me to apply to UAB...but what kept weighing on my mind was LIGHTNING AND THUNDER
