Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My dad's in real estate too. He develops subdivisions. Shockingly, we've come out of the economic slump. Last year (well, about Mar-this Feb) were pretty rough for us. In the last few weeks things have really turned around and they are selling faster than he can get them built!

God is good!

That's great! Unfortunately my mom is in the mortgage business, which is still very much in a slump, what with banks not wanting to give loans and such.

La la la...this post has been removed for posterity. Thank you for calling. Please come again.

Awww, good luck 🙁 Hopefully it'll turn around soon!

Thanks 🙂. She's honestly the hardest worker I know, and I have two sisters who depend on her financially, so I hate having to ask her for money too. As it is, she has no retirement fund whatsoever (although, as she likes to remind me, I'm her retirement fund 😛).

The best part of getting the scholarship was being able to tell her that I wouldn't need her to stress out about my tuition, cause she really wanted to help at least a little. I think it was a huge weight off her shoulders.

Yeah, I kinda know the feeling... have a brother who I suspect is going to be living off my parents for a long, long time. Luckily, they have been saving, so they still have some decent retirement put away... but I still feel bad asking for money when they already have another drain on their income.

For some reason, every class I've taken with the word "Africa" in it has brought down my GPA significantly. I think the continent doesn't like me.

Lol, most of my cultural classes revolved around the Asian continent. Yes yes, I took the easy way out 😛

I got pretty good grants to go to my undergrad, but I did have to take out a bit in loans. My sisters are kinda useless so my mom pays their college loans, while I have a job so I was going to be paying back my own. Instead, my mom took my loans (which are a bit more each month) and I took my sisters'. My sister is almost debt-free cause of me!
Luckily, thanks to my scholarship, I'll only have to take out 19,000ish a year for Vandy. As it turns out, my mom had been saving up some money for my med school tuition since I was 11 (which is kind of intense) and granted, it wouldn't have even covered a whole year's COA, but now she gets to keep it. She's decided that instead of just hoarding it, she'll spend some of it on a down-payment on a house for me near school, which is just lovely. However, between the mortgage (which is gonna be very high) and car payments (since I'll need to own a car for the first time in my life), I definitely won't have enough money with the loans I'm getting.
So, I'm hoping she'll be able to help me some more....🙁

My brother is one of the laziest people I know, but he's also smart enough to get by with the least amount of work necessary. He'll be self-sufficient, but if he were even the tiniest bit motivated, he could achieve so much more 😳

Yeah, that's what's so sad; my brother's utterly brilliant, I'd bet probably more intelligent than me... but he tries getting by with just LESS than the least amount of work necessary. I sure hope he'll eventually figure some stuff out... but right now he's stuck in the rut of sleeping till 1-2PM, getting up and playing computer games and talking to his useless girlfriend until 4AM, and then crashing an repeating the cycle again.

*sigh* And my parents let him get away with it.

I just compounded $200K at 6.8% 8 times and got $338,532.23.

Anyone else think that's kind of insane?

Yeah, I hate it when people talk about me behind my back.

La la la. I am bad at math.

FAIL at Math 🙂

Interest is compounded monthly, and you take disbursements semester by semester.

It's a bit more complicated than that.

Well the worse news is that only about $160K is going to be at 6.8%. The other $40K that I will probably need will probably be at 8.5%...

(I'm assuming a 4 year residency where I claim forbearance for all 4 years).

I thought Stafford was compounded annually. That's what it said when I looked it up last night .

I dunno, I'm new to FAFSA.

I've been paying mine for a bit, and I know they don't compound annually, but it may be quarterly, not monthly.

Not easily googled, but it might be annually.

It is still graduated disbursements 2x year. (Not sure how years 3 and 4 work)

OK, I'll worry about money later. I have an assigment due tomorrow (yes, the Friday of spring break).

I swear I used to be good at math...don't know what happened with that. 😳

Nope 🙁 TX residency is unusually difficult to acquire.
That is why you go to UTSW where you get TX residency even as an OOSer😎
Yep. UGrad was a full-ride for me, and working here has provided the same for grad school.

My parents are more than willing to help this time as much as they can. They're going to pay for most of my living expenses so I don't have to take quite as much. 😍
Same here... I actually find it odd that people pay for undergrad... Then my sister smacks me on the head and tells me that I need to get off my high horse:laugh:
Some people need to contact David Chan in order to get an understanding as to why I am going to Hopkins. I have been told my roommate and his friend are speculating it was only because I was disadvantaged, and it is quite bothersome.
Smack him on the head, and tell him, oh well, you got in, so hah!

Good luck, and Homework during spring break is like peeing in the holy water...IMHO... it is sacreligious... or eating pork in Temple, or [insert your own sacreligious example]
Wow...I missed 6 pages?!

Hi Berk... sheesh, I have a final in an hour, and I am still keeping up with this thread...:uhno:

Art History was not that bad... she had rather easy slide IDs and stuff, except I forgot whether the locations were on the Seine or the Argentuil...

Okay, time to cram for Turkish... is it even possible to cram for a language final?

Oh My Fudgemonkeys... it is 11... I need to get off the computer and study... but I just took a final and I am in my refractory period where I cannot study...

Take a 15-minute walk and get back to the hardcore studying?:luck::xf:👍
