Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is anyone else excited about financial aid packages coming out soon? I know I am drooling over the prospect of getting a full tuition scholarship to Hopkins (assuming I did the math correctly).
This reminds of
I wish I could get a full tuition scholarship, but I highly doubt that will happen since the schools I've been accepted too aren't all that generous.

What?
😀

OK, well you know you've been on SDN too long when you start to notice these things... time to go study 🙂
Good luck!

😱

I am excited about this prospect since I will make my final decision based on more financial decisions, barring an acceptance into a Cali school...

Yay, Success, my Western worked, kind of... It actually showed the exact opposite of what it should have been showing...

Oh well, time to strip it to see if the mistake is because of loading....

I'll still be around. My spring break is not until April and the fact that everyone here has already had their break is just a reminder that my next vacation is past overdue. Then again, the wait will make my break much sweeter.

I hope everyone enjoys their break.

Sadly, I think I'd switch with you... I was ready for a break only because I knew it was coming. It'll be much much harder to go back and make it until the end of May.

I don't think I'll be getting much more scholarship money than I've already been given.

Does anyone who has a scholarship offer know how this works?

Like, I have a small offer, so I'm planning on the rest of my package being loans... but I'll be pleasantly surprised if it is otherwise.

So Jealous... My last final is June 11th, and I graduate June 12th... for the whole school and June 13th for the MicroBio Department Graduation...

OUCH 🙁

The late start date would've been nice, I suppose... but for us, first trimester was almost over by the time you started school!

I haven't had a real break since last December, and I don't feel like working or doing school work at the time being, so that's why I think it would be a good time for me to take a break now. However, I would feel the same way if my schedule had been different this past year since what you are saying makes sense.

this is the craziest thread in SDN land....I can't believe how active this thing is.

How is everyone doing? Get all your vaccinations yet? Housing set up? Loans all readified? Scholarships secured?
I think I am about ready to drop a pretty penny on a hot-shot laptop pretty soon 🙂

EDIT: accidental TOP

MattO! You should post more often in this thread! What have you been up to?

I still haven't looked at the health forms. It would be a good idea to get on that.

I've been out on the town...got hired as a painter to make it all plush red 😉

j/k, i've had a really grueling schedule that I have been self-imposing as of late. I am getting up at 4am every weekday morning for alternating back-to-back cycling classes (MWF) and a Master's swim workout (TTh).
I'm actually headed to yoga in 5 minutes!
But yeah...I am just trying to get in decent shape so I don't die during any of my upcoming races I signed up for. I got the UC Davis Sprint on April 12th, a 50mile bicycle ride fundraiser on the 18th, and a Half IronMan on May 2nd.
Still waiting on a call for a job out in India...so I can afford to attend my friend's wedding down in Mexico right before orientation week =)

Oh...and perhaps my biggest vice: I got a PSP (playstation portable) and cannot put it down to save my life. I'm currently playing Tekken and Final Fantasy and have actually gotten cramps from extended play! ::embarrassed::

okay its yoga time.

Damn! I wish I could do all of that. 😳

If you guys haven't finished your hep b (or had it done as a kid) get on that... it takes 6 months and it's ridiculously annoying. Most schools want titer and surface antigen reports, so you'll need a blood draw for anything and you may need boosters and retiters... ugh, vaccinations were obnoxious.

😱 that sounds like I am cutting it close. 😱😱😱😱

Do you have any idea how jealous I am of you people and your so-called "spring break"?!
:laugh::laugh::laugh:

Yeah, I'll be sitting at my desk, bitter and disgruntled

Luckily, I already did my Hep B stuff last year (my PCP is pretty good about sending out reminders for stuff like that). I'm actually getting my Hep A vaccine at the moment (got the first shot in January, second one coming up in July).

What's everyone's opinion on Atkins?

I don't think I could make it on that diet. I would get sick of bacon and steak real fast 😛

From personal experience the best diet is basically eating smaller portions, and cutting out only the completely horrible stuff like ice cream, sodas, etc...

When I was on a cutting diet I ate lean meat, peanut butter, olive oil, salad, and fruits

Do you still need to get hep B if you already had it as a child etc.?

Atkin's works. However, it takes a toll on your body at first until all your organs convert over to ketone body mody metabolism. Your brain is significantly hindered at first. A major risk we were told in biochem is ketoacidosis but I don't think its as serious a threat as our professor made it out to be. That said, I don't think your PCP would recommend it or endorse it.

we don't have to have titers, just shot records. the six month business is a pain, I'm glad I started back in dec.
Well I was just reading about Hep B vaccination and it seems that it can be administered within three months; the second dose can be administered one month after the first and the third, two months after the second.

Bad. Well, the way people do it is bad (ie all you can eat meat, eggs, fat, etc). It works though...I know that for a fact.

I'm sure we'll learn all about fad diets in med school, but until then, please forgive my ignorance regarding Atkins. Anyway, surely you cannot sustain such a lopsided diet for life, so what happens when you go off the diet and back into normal eating habits?

We should have all been vaccinated for Hep B, not? I was. Maybe its because you're a little older, OMBD :d.

Yeah, yeah... I'm old... I get it... hahaha

Actually, I've had to get a few extra shots that I didn't get as a kid. shots made me get fevers, fevers gave me seizures... so therefore I only got the reqd ones..

but no seizures in about 18 years, so now they are loading me up.

I got the second one at the one month point, the third is due in june the way I read. I think i'll keep mine spread (due to the above statement about fever/seizures/etc)

In the case of Atkins your body is happy. You go off ketone body metabolism. If you eat healthy, you'll maintain the weight loss.

From the CDC:

What are the recommended schedules for hepatitis B vaccination?
The vaccination schedule most often used for children and adults is 3 intramuscular injections, the second and third doses administered 1 and 6 months, respectively, after the first dose. Alternate schedules have been approved for certain vaccines and/or populations.

I dunno, when I had the sequence it was 1 month wait for the second, then 6 months from the first for the third.

our biochem prof endorsed the atkins diet, haha.

I imagine the process will be long and drawn out to get 'justice' for this. By the time the hammer falls, our collective consciousness will be focused on something else.

A certain accountant is already in jail🙂. But yeah, it's going to take forever.

Bye Yoda. May the Force be with you🙂

Early Dinner? I have not even had lunch yet, and I just ate breakfast three hours ago...

Wow, you non PST people are weird😛

What can I say, I party it up while ya'll are in meetings ect.😎

Am I the only one who is obsessed with the ramifications of AIG's bonuses or anything else political? I keep reading the same article but written by at least 20 journalists, and they all have the same pieces of information.

I'm obsessed with most economic/finance crap, however I tend to avoid politics. I did resently right my representative over some ******ed balance sheet rules which contributed to the AIG&Lehman problems though.

Haha, or you could be like the cool kids and just drop the class 😉

Finals end April 22nd for me, I think. I figure classes must end at least a week before that.

Our schools are about on the same scheduel then. I get back from break and have one months of classes left. All of which I plan on skipping.

Is anyone else excited about financial aid packages coming out soon? I know I am drooling over the prospect of getting a full tuition scholarship to Hopkins (assuming I did the math correctly).

Assuming all loans, that way I won't be disappointed but may be excited.

I have nothing ready, secured, or planned. But now that you remind me I think I'll call and make an appointment for vaccinations in the morning.

Take it back.

its so you can cut quickly and lose body fat...once youve lost that body fat, you can begin to maintain a regular diet with the amount of caloric intake that will allow you to maintain physique you like..ill go on a modified low carb, high protein diet to lean up b4 i head to the beach....once i get to my target weight/body type, ill resume eating carbs, but ill try to eat healthier for as long as i like to maintain my abs ha...

were you ever fat?
Not exactly. But it's a good way to lose a few pounds.

don't ask girls that :laugh::laugh::laugh:
Haha you're one smart man, glory.

HHHAATTEEE YOU!

That's the thing! You lose weight fast on the diet...but as soon as you get off it, you're back to the way you were. It's ridiculously hard to stick to a no-carb diet. I agree with funkmonk, the best diet is smaller portions.
:laugh::laugh::laugh:

It had been a while, berk! But I'm pretty shocked YOU didn't know, Vadd! 😱

Seriously, we have this discussion once every month or so!
I'm pretty sure he's kidding...at least he better be 😡

It's nice to see everyone so health conscious. But I guess that would make sense for a bunch of future docs .

Ohh you're better than me. Once I get off the diet, I go back to normal 😳

You can lose weight FAST on atkins. It's good for events. And if anyone goes on atkins...don't eat as much fat as you want. A friend of mine tried it...but all she ate was deviled eggs, beef, chicken, nuts and full fat whipped cream. She didn't lose a single pound in the month.

I agree. I think the problem with fad diets is that they're too short term. They attempt to provide a quick fix where a whole readjustment of liferstyle is needed. A balanced diet in moderation and regular exercise is key imho.
