This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh young scrub you have much to learn!!!! You will NEVER get top in this thread! :uhno::sendoff::slap:

Even if you do actually get "Top" it will be STOLEN from you!

Please please please...know your role...you belong in the cheer and service section...not where all the action is occurring :meanie:

So grab some pom poms and just scream: "Go rice go...go berk go...go ombd go...etc..." ....Thanks..... oh and also grab us some drinks as well after you finish cleaning the dirt from off my shoes. You may invite your other 2014 friends to do the same for all my other 2013 buddies :meanie:

side note: Chubbs and Lyss are having some problems in their relationship (see the top nine sexiest list and responses thereafter for evidence)...your last chore is to make dinner reservations for those two this weekend in New York (Lyss doesn't do the South...)

I'm just kidding! But don't test me:laugh:

haha I don't know what imaginary relationship you people (ie, Rice) have dreamed up between me & Chubbs...

What am I cheering for exactly?

but i just wanted to say that this sucks pianola... but definitely go to the second looks. what does mr. nola thing about florida?

Mr. Nola is cool with wherever I want to go. I guess he's flexible. The only problem with staying where I am right now is that there are NO. JOBS. HERE. So, as a couple it might be better for us to move to the school where I got the scholarship (because he could find a job there).

Pianola, don't give up hope yet.

Call the financial aid office, see if you can arrange a phone conference and explain your special circumstances. Explain how much you love Baylor and want to go there but with your special circumstances & the vast differences in cost between Baylor & XXXXX SOM, it is becoming increasingly difficult to justify choosing Baylor. You never know, they might be able to throw you a bone. You probably won't get a free ride but you might be able to get something.

Yeah I might do that. I figure whether they're giving need-based or merit-based I probably have a decent case.

But...I do want to wait until I get the financial aid package from UF because I want to know where I stand with them first.

Pianola, not to make it a contest or anything, be happy you have a choice of going to a cheaper school. I doubt I'll be hearing from UMaryland, meaning that I have the good fortune of attending NYMC and paying upwards of $300K just for attendance, not to mention interest payments. I have 2 siblings in college and my mom telling me "Good luck, honey!" and my EFC is still almost $6000. You'll figure things out but I hope you hear good news about financial aid. I don't think I will 😡

Yeah, oh I totally understand. After I wrote that post last night I thought about it and I realized that a LOT of schools are asking for a significantly more tuition and the cost of living is higher. I am being a little selfish I guess. But the fact of the matter is my parents simply CANNOT afford to help me out any more than they already have.

I also have a sister in school. Well, she was in school. Now she's just going to be home and unemployed -- I suppose medical schools aren't going to make allowances for that kind of thing.

Do you think marrying your bf would help your financial situation at all? Since you will both be taking out massive amounts of loans?

Since I will be in lab very late tonight, I think lunch will have a ton of caffeine in it.

Good luck! Try to hold off on caffeinating yourself too heavily until the end...cause when the caffeine effect wears off, you tend to crash. You can save higher doses of caffeination for later on.

Pianola, I don't think getting married would really help your situation. It actually just adds more income & I don't think most schools factor debt into the equation when crunching the numbers... plus it's a crappy reason to get married 😀 You should date or at least a year before you even think about that kind of stuff

Oh yeah, I'm not considering getting married.

I think sarahl has been with her bf for a much longer period of time than I have. My question was about HER situation not mine.

oooooh :smack: my bad!

well technically we do... or will... when you are one of our interns

psh... I'm in charge now. And besides if I ever was one of your interns, y'all couldn't be mean to me. I'm too amazing for that.

this is my favorite new smiley...

One of them isn't laughing... otherwise, amazingness

Yeah I think she's looking at a way worse situation $$-wise than I am since her bf is also going to medical school.

All I can say is kudos to her and wish her all the best.

Haha, no. We've been together for a year now 😍 We're both gonna be broke as a joke and he's already been engaged once 🙂scared🙂 so now he's convinced that he needs to take 50000x longer than necessary to decide to propose to the next person. That and the inability to buy a ring/have a wedding/all that hooplah...ugh. Don't even want to think about it. Of course I wouldn't be too opposed to the idea but I agree, I don't think it will help much.

I think that's a better position, personally, assuming it works out.

yea I hate to say I feel her pain 🙁

I'm not likely to get any aid & neither is my bf so we will both be taking out 70k in loans each year... and I still have some loans from undergrad... FML

Dual physician marriages have a significantly lower divorce rate (11-20% that I've read) w00t! It's a big "IFFFF" but he's a really optimistic person and has a huge thing for redheads 😀

Please put down the pipe and wipe the cocaine from around your nose. :meanie::laugh:

EDIT: TOP! I am on a top roll...3 in the last 12 hours. Haha.

Oh hehe. Sorry, I thought it was longer. 😛 But yeah.

I don't think Mr. Nola or I are thinking of marriage for quite a while at least in part for those same reasons. It's hard to fathom having a wedding that's just going to cost your more loans (even if it's a small wedding). He has his own set of reasons for being cautious, too (his dad was divorced 5 times).

We'll see what happens, I guess.

and also have higher income so faster loan repayment.

I'm scared to even think of marriage with the way the divorce rate is in this country, physician or no physician. I've been tied down for 5 years & as much as I'd love to make it more "official," I'd like to make sure we survive 3rd year first. You just never know anymore 🙁

Wow, yeah that's a lot.

😀 Yay!

and also have higher income so faster loan repayment.

And more debt so more interest.

It's just a crappy feeling to feel constrained by debt, that's all. Knowing that the $3 cup of coffee I might buy on Monday will turn into a $6+ cup of coffee by the end of residency.

Remember you can also refinance. You can almost certainly get an interest rate lower than 6.8%. Never mind that when you're in repayment that if you make 36 on time payments, most lenders will lower your interest rate by 2% and electronic payments decrease your interest rate by another 0.25%.

Debt isn't your enemy, and once you pay off your loans you'll realize you'll never have made an investment that good for the rest of your life. Kind of sad.

Yeah, that's true. I think we're both planning on being fairly cautious.

We'll see.

Yeah, assuming that I don't opt for part time work while my children are growing up (after I've paid off my loans, of course).

Yes it's a lot of money... and it sucks to have to pay it back & be tight for a good amount of time... but even with a ****ty specialty you will still be making more money than A LOT of people. It can be paid and it will. If I'm going to have debt, I'd like it to be good debt... at least that's how I look at it.

At the financial aid presentation at WCMC they made a good point. They said that so far the percentage of people that have defaulted on their med school loans is 0%. It's crazy money, ridiculous money... but it can & will be paid. And if you are smart you can manage it without paying double in interest. I don't think most people will be paying that much interest (assuming they are smart of course)

Part time work still pays a lot in any field besides FP <shrug>

Stephen King definitely knows a thing or two about bad writing...

I don't think the Twilight books were poorly written. I think the biggest problem was more that there were a few too many of them to tell not that much story.

By poorly written I don't mean the writing was complete and utter crap, but as much as I'm not an overall fan of the Harry Potter books (don't kill me please!) I have to admit that J. K. Rowling is a "better writer" than Stephanie Meyers. I think a better writer could have made the Twilight books story much less snark-worthy.

Yeah, my boyfriend and I are being extremely cautious. He doesn't even graduate from undergrad until next year! And he's not positive he's staying in the US 🙁 though he seems to be leaning toward it. We've been together for two years so far and I've been optimistic from the start, but every now and then I panic. We're going to be long distance indeterminately.

My mother wants me to get married and start having kids before residency. 😱 She says I should give my boyfriend an ultimatum of I want to be married by the time I'm 25 or that's it (I'm 22). Umm... not the right time for that talk yet.

You also have to consider that the target audience is teenage girls...
