I am now officially trying to think of a challenge question instead of finishing up my app... what is wrong with this picture? A little bit of putting the cart before the horse? lol

Quick question, how short is too short for experience descriptions? Some are like only one or two sentences...

My postbacc director wanted us to use the whole 1325, but that is hard to do. She also said to make sure you include what org, what did you do, and what did it mean to you and the community. Hope that helps Carly!

Thats the thing, I have no idea whether I should be writing what the experiences mean to me. LizzyM on that one forum says to bullet point and that experience section is not the place to talk about that. I am lost...

My shortest description was for Dean's List. It was only two sentences. Just I was on dean's list these semesters and dean's list is for students with this cut off point GPA. That's it. Most of my other descriptions were only around 900 or so characters. I've never been good at adding fluff, so I knew the quality of what I was writing would drop off precipitously if I tried.

I'm doing well, thanks! I'm a bit nervous and excited at the same time because I leave to Costa Rica next week on a medical mission. I'm going to be working in three impoverished villages and shadowing at a clinic a few miles outside of San Jose. I'm also going to be staying with a Costa Rican family while I'm there... that's the part that makes me nervous!

I've never traveled by myself, much less stayed with people I didn't know! 😳 I'm excited though... it should be a fun, new experience.

Any plans for the summer (besides applying to med school, of course 🙂)?

Hahaaa, that's true. Of course, maybe that will scare them off (hmm, this med school might be filled with freaks). Especially if, when they don't do the rocket thing with us, we throw in a little jazz hands action. "Rocketeer!!!" *Jazz hands*
 
Well, with that challenge question you're running the risk of getting into an awkward conversation with someone you didn't really want to.

You: "So....what specialty are you thinking of?"

Pre-med not cool enough to know about 2013: "Oh well I started out thinking family practice but my dad, who's a surgeon by the way, says it doesn't pay as much and that I deserve better. So now I'm thinking of going in neurocardiocraniallumbarthorascic surgery. I shadowed one of these guys a while back and he knew a guy who dated a girl who's the third cousin of one of the adcom member's daughters, so I'm pretty much in already. I mean, this interview is basically a courtesy to keep up appearances. You know how it is. Blah blah blah."

I say we pick something a little more innocent. Maybe something that could be legitimately be asked to a group of interviewees so that you can find out the 2013ers without having to approach everyone individually.

Wow. I definitely spent waaaay more time on that than I intended. As you can tell, I think it's a lot of fun to come up with this stuff.
 
Random question... do any of you know what shots will be required for med school? I'm sure it is several.. I was just wondering if any of the schools you applied to gave a list.

guys..... today was ridiculous.

Instead of just "holding the clamp" (as Dr. ___________ said I would) I held back things like a LIVER. With my "bare hands" (clad in gloves of course).

it was the most surreal moment of my life.

gradu2003 - I took the scrub mask home with me. I thought this experience was souvinear-worthy!

Well, i guess, in a way, but firmer. The colon feels more like warm jello - left out in the sun too long so it's all slimy and slippery.

either way, the 2nd most surreal moment of the experience was watching the patients' organs shift slightly every time they breathed in or out. I know that sounds silly - but it was the coolest thing I have ever seen.

That said, after this last day shadowing a surgeon I really don't think I want to go into surgery. As awesome as the experience was, I just don't think I would be into it day in and day out. Also, I may be lacking in the "god complex" department..... 😉

Yeah, I got the same feeling after I shadowed a surgeon (didn't get to hold anything, but I got the gist of it). Their intership and residency years are supposed to be much worse than other specialties and often result in divorces. I'm trying to start a family at some point and I feel like a divorce would throw a wrench into those plans...

Last year, all I got was podiatry school junk mail... and Ross U sent me one. :laugh:
Today it is SLU and MCW.

:laugh: Last year, after my piss-poor MCAT attempt in May, I got a brochure "Have you considered a career in chiropracty?"

It was all I could do not to burst into tears....

Crap, that sucks. I didn't submit until early Tuesday morning. It'd be nice if they got to us before June 24th (which is next Tuesday!)

Same here. My mom picked on me about Dr. Scholl's coveting my presence so much. Podiatry is affectionately known as "foot school" in my household. And, I too, wanted to cry. But something about foot school was funny enough to keep me smiling.

I read somewhere in the bazillion pages of the "official verification thread" about an SDN member that had waited like 2 weeks to be verified. He/she called up AMCAS, and was told that order of submission has no bearing on order of verification. Basically, by submitting, your app is just placed in an electronic folder, and the 'verifiers' pull the apps out of there at random.

Hey LET, any prediction for the Germany-Portugal match? With the way Portugal has been playing, I'm going to say Cristiano and company will beat Germany 2-1. It's going to be a great game! I'm really looking forward to the Netherlands-Russia match, the two best counter-attack teams in the tournament.

I actually haven't really been following those two groups...too busy stressing out about Italy, but I have heard Portugal has been doing great, so I'll take your prediction! And yeah, I really can't wait for either game...when are they again? Jobs are SO inconvenient.

I'll bet it has SOME bearing on verification. I mean, if you submit early with, say, 100 other people, then odds are 1/100 that the next randomly selected application is yours. If you submit later with 1,000 people, then the odds drop to 1/1000.

This alone is enough for me to submit early, but it's not nearly as nice as thinking "first come, first served."

I was thinking about something. I feel like we should do something REALLY crazy if we get into our top choice schools. I'm thinking about what I should do, but how about we start a sub-thread of sorts:

"If I get into *insert top choice(s) here* I will..."

SO, if I get into Duke/UCSF/Columbia, I will...

crap, I can't come up with anything. I'm gonna think about it.
