Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
daily cardio -- as much as I have time for each day. I tend to not make it too stressful. So between 1 to 3 hours.

Weight training will probably be M-W-F. This will probably not be longer than 30 minutes. Probably.

If you don't have time, you can skip the cardio on days where you lift weights. Also, deadlifts are awesome for increasing your metabolism. Squats are good too but they hurt the neck alot so most ladies hate it.

I don't think Myuu will do your avatar if you call HER a he...

Oh, did you get the grade thing resolved yet?

oh my.. im so sorry myu!! my bad. i shan't forget again
and no, not yet. supposed to make an appt to meet with the deans next week.

Okay guys, I'm off to my audition!

I'll be back later to update you!

PS - I'm not as nervous now. 😎

how did it go?

Hmm. Good tip. If I get pressed for time, I'll consider that.

I can't actually squat. Unfortunately. Mr. Nola was saying that people actually sit around like that in Thailand. He can squat a lot of weight, actually.

I just tip over and fall 😛.

Well, like I said, I take it very, very, very easy. So I'm not exactly running. I set the incline to 6 (if you have the PRECOR ellipticals) and the workload to about 5. So it's very relaxing actually. Glorified walking.

But hey, it works for me.

I used to do like 35 mins of elliptical, during the first 3 months of my training. Then I gave up cardio altogether because it's so boring. I'll probably have a heart attack when I'm 40.

Squats are actually not as good as deadlifts and snatches

http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance/the_perfect_snatch

Work = Force * Distance. Snatch is one of the best exercises, along with clean and press (I don't recommend clean and press until you can do alot of weights. Even after 8 months I can only clean and press 80 lbs which is kinda pathetic). Snatch, deadlift, squats are all compound exercises. Compound is all I do because I hate cardio. They work your heart like crazy and increases your metabolism for like 48 hours post-workout.

Hope ur interview went well chad I'm home chilling on the couch under a few blankets. feeling a bit under the weather with a cough, runny nose, wheeze, and lowgrade fever. Just enough to be miserable. 🙁

Not just thailand. Most of asia actually. When I was in China a couple of years ago, I was at a train station, the bathroom basically consisted of a ditch where you squat down and crap. In fact, about 10 years ago, all the bathrooms in most apartments in China were squating style.

Here's an article on some nice compound exercises

When I visited my grandparents, they had to install a "western" toilet to accommodate us...

um...wow.

yup. It's much better now though. Only train stations at smaller cities are like that, and they are being rebuilt.

In late 19th and early 20th century, when there weren't public bathrooms, people in Paris used to just crap on the street, there weren't even public ditches.

Yeah...stupid question: do you know if squatting is a man-thing? Or are women supposed to be able to squat, too?

I'm just wondering because at some point I might visit Thailand with him and...well, I guess I'm probably going to stick out like a sore thumb anyway. But I'd like to at least not be totally culturally out-of-the-loop, you know?

It is for everyone😱

just dropping by for a quick hello!

now my avatar has 2013 in it! hmmm....it doesn't look as cool as some of the others. if any of you talented artsy people have any inspirations and can help me make it look super cool, lemme know! 🙂

i'll be back in a while.

I could put in the background or decorate the headscarf with it, if you'd like.🙂

Yeah...stupid question: do you know if squatting is a man-thing? Or are women supposed to be able to squat, too?

Actually, women are even better at squatting than men (i.e. they can stay in that position longer without discomfort), because their center of gravity is lower.

If you look at photos in National Geographic, etc., squatting seems to be the universal posture for people all over the world, not only in bathrooms but working in the fields, selling things by the side of the road, cooking by open fires, etc. ...

yes, it's for everyone... i lived in thailand for six months and they would literally squat for hours and hours... all of the womens' cooking/etc. chores would be done in that position!!!

after like 15 mins my knees would hurt and i'd just sit indian style and they'd laugh at me!

i had a semi-western toilet: regular toilet bowl, and then you scoop a pail of water from a nearby tank, pour it in to 'flush'... good times.

by the end of my stay though, i actually perferred the squat-pots.

what I couldn't get used to though was the no-toiletpaper-use-a-sprayer-instead custom!!!

beat me to it... true, true, true, true.

Let me guess, Mr Nola is Thai? 🙂

And unless you plan on not crapping, squatting to crap will be necessary.

It also depends on whether you are in the rural areas or the urban areas... because the urban areas should have more western facilities...

helloooo people. Looks like you were busy while I was gone.

Oh dear. I guess I'll work on my squatting, then. Eeks.

Interesting. Yeah I guess we'll see what happens if I visit.

Yes Mr. Nola is Thai. Haha, so now i have to figure out how to not-crap.

Yeah, he's from near-Bangkok. I didn't quite ask him what the toilet facilities were like though 😛😛😛.

Haha...ok "practice squatting" is going on the To Do list.

I'm pretty sure even in bangkok you will have to at some point use the ditch style toilets. And make sure you ask Mr Nola to take you to watch a boxing match! It's not for the faint of heart, but then again, you are gonna see much worse as a med student so it should be good med school prep 😀

*gulp*

Hmm. I guess I'll deal with it when it comes up...😳

[Boxing...? 😱]

Wow this thread has gone nuts! I can't keep up with it. 🙂

But since y'all were talking about women and weight-lifting, I wanted to share this site: http://stumptuous.com/cms/index.php. Ex-rx is also really useful, but Stumptuous is by far the best site I've ever seen for newbie "real" lifters, especially women. Aside from awesome instructional articles, photos and videos, she also debunks the myths that people sometimes have about lifting, like that heavy weights make you bulky, etc.

Just in time for TOP!

I like being old and in a relationship! 😀
