Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ok...is anyone else getting burned out by this process? I have been pretty sane the majority of this cycle, but now I feel like I am starting to go crazy.

Haha next year will be worse for you though.

yeah, we live near a big casino area, and being 21+ is important for even going to some of the concerts/comedy shows.

Plus at 23 I now actually look 17+ and I'm rarely carded at movies!

I got carded at a movie for the first time ever over the summer. I was like WTF😕 and asked the carder if they were serving beer with the movie or something.

With a few notable exceptions, I feel like I drink significantly less now than I did when I was pre-21. I guess once it became legal, I had nothing to rebel against 😛

Me too, my drinking days peaked somewhere between 16 and 19.

That's why I said "tends to". I believe it's biological, at least according to a film I watched in high school biology, that females tend to be more attracted to older males. If the older males were not attracted to those younger females in return, then evolution would have eliminated this trend.
thanx for da grammer lessonz

I think girls are supposed to be attracted to guys who seem responsible, stick around to take care of children, and have the means to do it well. So I guess the older you are, the easier that is to do, but obviously there are a lot of people who don't follow that trend 😛

Were you ever into the "bad boys"? I'm sure there is an age when a girl says "I'm tired of the jerks, I need someone who is mature"

yup, highest probability of offspring survival. And in the case of the Nemo's parents, slightly higher probability of offspring survival, it's largely out of their control.

yeah...I am trying to get back into the swing of studying regularly again by auditing a class and just studying certain textbooks on my own.

Question for you: So I definitely DO NOT plan on doing anything related studying during the summer; however, I have started reviewing my biochem textbook and reading a genetics textbook. I do realize that much of my studying could be EVEN MORE pointless if I do not have a guide I can use to tailor my studying towards what is most relevant.

Do you suggest going to Penn's bookstore, for instance, and flipping through the med school first year syllabi so I can get a clear idea of on what I should focus?

Thanks!!!

I know everyone advises against pre-studying for med school, but I'm going CRAZY with nothing to do. I think I'll end up pre-studying a bit just to keep my sanity.

It really depends. I think the thing that you would find the most value in studying would be anatomy if your school has it first semester. Having a good idea of how everything is oriented will make your life infinitely easier, so going through a Netter or something of the sort (or at least an anatomy coloring book) would be pretty key. A close second would probably be histology, and the only basic science that I think would be really useful might be embryology/developmental biology.

I can only speak for my med school but I've found that the basic sciences are really pretty clinically focused here and not as abstract as they are taught in undergrad, with a lower level of detail, so while there might be value in studying the pathways, the way you'll probably need to know them in med school is pretty different and I wouldn't think you'd get that much out of it, but YMMV.

I dunno, I think it'd be useful in the context of my post immediately above. I know I'm going to prestudy like a MF for 2nd year.

Yessir, yes I am. And I'm a late 88er, so I'm practically an 89.
i'm an 88 er too!
best rugby weekend ever! Blues, you missed out on some sweet 7s action. I also came out 2 dollars on top after placing a few 1 dollar bets on a few of the games
nice, yeah i definitely miss being able to go to rugby games ... no wonder people think i'm a boy ... basketball, rugby, but who cares 😀

i'm really burned out too. i also have two midterms, monday and tuesday 🙁 which i have NOT started to study for. i've gone out everynight since wednesday since i had friends/cousin in town.:scared:

also, bad boys >> good boys, but that's just me 😀

i need to withdraw and i was wondering what should i say in it. also letter/email? would someone mind sending me theirs to look at?

My withdrawal letters were really simple, "I am writing to withdraw from the Class of 2012, I enjoyed visiting X school but have decided to go elsewhere, thank you very much for the opportunity, bye."

I don't think you need to say much more than that, as long as you're polite you shouldn't be burning bridges.

did you defer for a year or something?

Cool...Also, I am actually a histology TA right now...so that is one thing I will leave alone

Thanks, I'm glad 2 know I'm not the only one prestudying haha. I think a little prestudying will help me feel caught up with all those bio/chem 4.0 undergrad folks if nothing else.

I think that's a good idea... it will help as long as you do it effectively. I posted in the useful books post which books I think are helpful.

If your school captures lectures, you might be able to get access to the previous years' lectures, which could potentially be really useful, also.

OMBD, you're making me kinda nervous... is everyone pre-studying? i was just going to chill for like 5 months ... maybe you could share you amazon list with us. and 👍 to LET for the textbook thread

I didn't study before I started med school and rocked first semester but second semester makes me wish I had studied some anatomy over break. The main thing isn't really knowing info as much as having a good understanding of how everything is put together and interacts and orienting yourself in space, a lot of which won't happen until you're wrist deep in the cadaver, but every little bit helps.

yeah, Moore's and Netter's and you're good to go. Master those two books and you'll rock anatomy in med school and on the boards.

Thanks btw 🙂

There's a neat book called Why Sex Matters that goes into the underlying evolutionary factors guiding attractiveness and a whole slew of other gender-related traits. (If, you know, you get bored and want something educational to read.)

your welcome

There is no way on this green earth that I am pre-studying, unless this artistic anatomy book written by a French MD in 1850 counts. In which case, I suppose I'm pre-studying whether I like it or not.

You might want to hold off on purchasing Netter's for now. I was reading something on the Case wiki about the students being able to get it free with an AMSA/credit card combo deal.😱

hmm, maybe i should just follow my original plans and NOT pre-study at all. i have a lot planned out for my break anyways 🙂 and life long learning will begin in like 6 months 😀

You get the online netter's (and/or cards) not the atlas of human anatomy.

The version is called Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy.

Were you ever into the "bad boys"? I'm sure there is an age when a girl says "I'm tired of the jerks, I need someone who is mature"
No, I was never into the "bad boys." I was pretty much utterly disdainful of them 😉 I never understood girls who were into guys who were really arrogant or really mean or known cheats.

I should really read the whole thread before posting. Thank to you Mr. Chick Magnet for his advice!

oh okay thanks.

so which one should i get out of: http://www.amazon.com/Atlas-Human-A...d_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1234745647&sr=8-1

and

I only want to prestudy to get on the same level with everyone else, not necessarily far ahead. Sometimes the not-premed "major" anxiety kicks in haha

yeah, i'm not a pre-med major either ... which kind of worries me but i figure that i'm going to be studying for the rest of my life and i'm going to make a last ditch to do nothing so i'll be all charged up for med school! but good for you, as drizz says every bit counts 👍

*yawn*. I'm sleepy.

i agree, this is very sleep inducing weather. is anyone planning to visit nz this summer. if any of you guys happen to be down under, definitely contact me, i'll show you around

ours is the second version...

I was having a really nice nap until my mom yelled at me for the 50th time to wake up since we are having guests again today🙁

As much as I can't wait for med school, I gained a bit of appreciation for ugrad today... We have Pres day (tomorrow) off, while my MS1 fiance has a physio test tomorrow plus the usual complement of classes 😱

It's not a huge deal, I was just surprised. "Holiday" seems to drop out of one's lexicon with the donning of a short white coat..
