Honestly don't know how you could have avoided encountering that before now. I had an ORM friend who was a sweetheart but would b*tch about that a lot. She got into Harvard for undergrad so it was not like her life was really affected about it, but she still b*tched about it.

I don't have many American ORM friends. Actually, I don't have many American (ie, all together born and raised) friends. 😳 Nearly all of us are international to some extent or dual-citizens who grew up outside of the US. My core friend group consisted of my Ecuadorian best friend (dual citizen), a Mexican (green card), my Turkish boyfriend (visa), his Chinese best friend (green card), and one good natured "All American White Boy." My extended friend group is only vaguely less diverse.

I knew this issue exists, but I guess I just didn't realize quite how prevalent the sentiments are and how bitterly many feel about it, on all sides.

Man, who am I going to be friends with in med school if I want to keep this up? I guess the grad students? I'll be living with one (my bf's chinese best friend, in fact; who's a she, btw) so that's a start.

I have a friend who got married and fully intended to take her husband's name. A year later she had never gotten around to the paperwork, so she just kept her maiden name. We all think it was really a big scam (😉), so maybe you could take that route...

I found out that UofL does their white coat ceremony the day before orientation week starts. Anyone else's school do this? I thought it was usually done after orientation week but before classes start?

Mine's done the weekend after orientation/classes start. Orientation/classes start on a Thursday, so I guess that's close enough.

I think I'm going to keep my last name because legally it's a PITA to change one's last name. I don't want any annoying problems with security checks and passports and "we can't find your name here anywhere". Besides, there's a very good chance I will earn my MD under my own last name. So I might as well be Dr. Mylastname. (It would be nice to marry Mr. Nola after I finish med school but before I start residency).

I do like Mr. Nola's last name better than mine. So socially, I don't mind if people call me Mrs. Hubbyslastname. Besides, socially, I would kind of like to have the same last name as any children we have together.

JP has been "up & coming" for awhile, but it's one of my fave neighborhoods. I like Back Bay too
