Class of 2014 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I feel pretty good about the class so far. Our professor is a joke. I swear I could get up there and teach better than she can after just reading the book. I'm sure the difficulty will increase as we get into more detail, but I actually like the information we are learning, which makes it a lot easier to study! 🙂

when is everyone planning on taking their DAT?

I am planning on taking the Kaplan course this summer than taking the DAT in August.

Take the DAT as soon as possible. It can take schools forever to process your application. Kaplan helps a lot only if you are willing to put the time into it. Be prepared to study for 200+ hours for the test. Try to take a class before then if you are done in May. You will be glad you did once you are accepted. I made that mistake last year and had my application submitted in August. I only herd back from my in-state school before DEC 1st and now I am turning down a bunch of other schools just for interviews that offered in december because it took a while to process the application.
Good Luck
Hi Guys,
Can you please answer to my questions. I am finishing my BS degree in May, and would like to apply for dental school and take the DAT in this summer. I was planning to take it at the end of august, but by reading this threads I've got so worried that is going to be too late. I am planning to take the Kaplan DAT class, but they start either in June 15 or July 15, so what do you think I have to do? Should I completely ignore taking DAT in August and plan to take it in Jine just like all of you?
thank you so much,
you guys are great!

when is everyone planning on taking their DAT?

Actually just made my appointment today to take the test on July 1st! Still planning on submitting the app as soon as AADSAS makes it available though!

I highly recommend Kaplan. Rommytowe is right in that it only helps when you put a lot of effort into it. I took the class after already taking the DAT once. The class was especially helpful for me b/c Ive been out of school for 2 years. My first scores were:

Bio 19
GChem 25 (got lucky)
OChem 17
PA 20
QR 18
RC 21
TS 19
AA 20

After Kaplan:
Bio 26
GChem 20 (Oops!)
OChem 30
PA 21
QR 17
RC 28
TS 24
AA 24

Damn lol this AADSAS cycle is not even over yet. Good luck to all of your super gunners

I'm graduating and taking the DAT in May, will apply early.

My school doesn't have a good GPA system so an A is 4.0 and a B is a sad 3.0...oh, I hate that!

Well I plan on taking mine in May but have you heard anything for a date when AADSAS is going to open the application process? I heard July 1 but idk if that is true

Yeah I heard its June 1st this year!

So could you guys comment on my situation. Its one the 1st page and I am too lazy to repost it😴

Well I can't take the DAT until june, and my cgpa is not to strong (3.3). I thought I can get it up to 3.4 or 3.5 but that cant happen until the end of this year. Hope to get into UF, NYU, or Temple.Do you think I should still apply in may? I have a CRAZY upward trend the last semester was 4.03, and for the last 2 years 3.7 and higher. My science, after this semester should be a 3.6.

I wouldn't wait until June or July to send in the app. I would do it as soon as possible, then just send your scores when you get them. You have an upward trend, and professional schools in general like to see the fact that you can handle a tough course load and still pull out those good grades. Also, I looked at your pre-dent profile, and your ECs are excellent, so I would say to go ahead and apply. Rock the DAT, and voila! 🙂

Good luck!

I have a question for everyone else, though. If you submit it say, June 1st, but don't have DAT scores, will your app still be at the top of the pile when you submit your scores? Otherwise, what's the point of submitting until you have the scores?

Thanks!

Im with you guys...i wont take DAT till late june or early july. Should i apply right when application opens (JUNE 1st this year)? What are the implications. Throw it down for Florida you USF'ers, im at UF

I would suggest applying as soon as the application becomes available. You can update your DAT scores as you need even after you press submit. So get everything else there early so they are just waiting on your DATs(which take about 2-3 weeks to reach the school) then maybe you can be considered for an early interview and Dec. 1 acceptance. Once you press Submit on AADSAS you can only update two sections: DAT Scores and Coursework so get everything else perfect before you apply.

My DAT date isn't until July 1, but I am set on having the app in June 1...from various opinions around here, it seems like it will still be in the early interviews group. I think I will send the unofficial score report to schools immediately after I take it just to be safe!

Heyy All, I'm anxiously waiting for the cycle to reopen as well!! I already got all of my pre-reqs done, I'm just starting my education phases, am also focusing on that and on dental school stuff (LOR'S, Shadowing, kaplan) I wish the best of luck to everyone !! at least we are going through it together 🙂

Where is everyone planning to apply??

UTHSC Houston, UTHSC San Antonio, Baylor Dallas, UOP, UCSF, NYU, Howard, Temple, Oklahoma.. and others.. Good Luck all..

Studying for my DAT's now.. I hope I can do really well

UF's my top choice...Nova, UNC, Maryland, Louisville, Penn, ASDOH, Case, Temple, Ohio State, VCU, maybe LSU & UAB...definitely adding more as I go along, but those are the ones I am pretty certain about so far...I'd really love to go to Houston, but I know its basically a waste of money/effort applying to Texas dschools as a non-resident, unless you have ridiculous stats. 🙁

Yeah I heard its June 1st this year!
Yeah Aadsas sent out an email to anyone with an applicationn in the 2009 cycle saying that its closing on Feb 1 and next years cycle will open on June 1 2009.

So does it even matter if I submit my application before I have taken the DAT? (I would like to submit it early in June but will not take the DAT until August)

im reapplying for this next year too, applied to 31 this year got rejected from almost all of them. i got my applications into schools last year around september early. but this year i need to get in very early the schools said. the weakers your app is the earlier it needs to be in. I will probably only do about 20 this next year some i just got rejected straight away.

UCLA
UCSF
UOP
Maryland
Harvard
Michigan
Minnesota
UNLV
Columbia
Buffalo
Case
U Penn
VCU
UW
Marquette
U Conn

Minus 4-5 schools (Case, Min, others). Tough decision.

If I don't get in this year....and it's looking less likely by the day, I'll be applying with you guys as well.

I'll be applying to:

Tufts, UMD, BU, Penn, Columbia, USC, Michigan, Temple, Pitt, UD, UofP, Case

sGPA: 3.5 (might be a little higher after this semester)
cGPA: 3.6 (" ")
DAT: 21 / 22 / 18(ouch)
Planning on applying June 1st.

I go to USF too! I was going to take biochem this semester, but figured I would take it easy. Busted and ninja, are you in the predental society? I have trouble making it to the meeting times.

3rd week of class and I can't wait to be finished with Biochem. Yea, I am a member of the predental club. Meeting times do need to change.

USF is taking over this thread!

i hope to apply to BU, Tufts, Michigan, NYU, Stonybrook, UMDNJ, Case Western, a few others..would love to apply to Texas schools..but yea lol

Nice to see so many fellow Bulls in here! I'm currently trying to get into the Pre-Dental Society. I have to work pretty much every Wednesday (when the meetings are held) so it's hard for me to find a time to pay my dues and be admitted. I'm off next Wed though, so I'll be there for sure!

Are you in the club? If so, is it helpful? Can they help me find an assisting/shadowing/volunteer position? That's the one thing my app is lacking....extracurriculars/experience. :scared:

how come everyone wants to apply to texas?

how is UofP?

Its cool to see everyone else is in a worried mindset already too! My friends think I'm nuts and that May is forever away and I have plenty of time, so it's good to know I'm not crazy lol

I start a Kaplan class at UB in 2 weeks so that should be interesting... I start next week shadowing a peds dentist (for 3 upper level bio elective credits... SCORE!) and we are going to do something in February since it is Childrens Dental Health month lol I'm waiting until that project is over so I can write about it in my essay, and I am waiting to ask my profs for letters until I finish my essay so they have a little more insight on me.

I forget whoever said they need to survive micro this semester, I'm with you! This semester just started on Monday and I already have a lab due Tuesday and Chapters 1-6 to read and outline for Monday!😱

I have family there...I was accepted to UT Austin undergrad, but I didn't end up going because my state school was a lot cheaper...and now that I'm more independent of my parents anyway, I would like to try something new!

Personal Statement done
DAT in July 1
Trying to survive 3 bio + 1 chem this semester..including immunology!😱

After this semester, I will have taken biochem, anatomy, microbio, immunology on top of all those common required courses...is that sufficient for upper div science?? missing anything important??
Histology is a plus

Hey Biogirl804 Are you taking it at UB as well? That is the only official prep I’m doing other than that I’m just going to do some on my own. What about you? And yes it is 3 weeks February 11th, I believe that is the online practice test lol

Jdm789 sweet I will def see you there then lol It sucks because I go to Fredonia State and will have to drive that hour to UB every Sunday and with the weather we have been having…I hope it’s worth it! I almost got stranded last week on the 219 going to Holiday Valley to ski lol

Haha water88 how do you think it went!?! I am def not looking forward to my first test! lol

i'm applying to:

UMDNJ
ATSU
Temple
NYU
Maryland
Buffalo
Western
Midwestern
VCU
Boston
Howard
UPacific
Tufts

i should add more because of my stats...thats a roughdraft 🙂

Hey, joshj519 nope i am taking it far away from there....haha I'm taking it in long island, but it starts around the same time. But, yea I'm pretty much doing the same thing. I'm soooooo nervous...lol

should be working, but of course im checking out SDN...haha

im majoring in biology secondary education....what about everyone else??

I'm doing Bio, both because I'm somewhat interested in the material and it knocks out most, if not all, of the pre-reqs for dental school.

what does +/- grades mean??

Sorry guys, to clear up my 4.03 at USF I ment that when my +/- grade is counted my gpa is 4.03, for that semester. I was pretty sure that when you apply to AADSAS that they count a +/- and without?

My spring semester ends in late April, the 27th to be exact. I know I can get A's in everything but Biochem. First exam is coming up on friday and, its very hard lol. I'm not sure how competive I will be without my DAT scores. I've been in school since 2004, and haven't really taken it serious till 2 years ago when I started killing all my classes. So this is why I think it would be better to submit with DAT scores. Let me know guys.

Haha that's me too, and somewhat is the imperative word lol

what does +/- grades mean??

they suck...meaning we have +/- calculated into our GPA (ie. A-, B+, C-, etc)...so if we get a 91% in a class, we only get an A- (3.75 GPA points) whereas most other universities just call it an A with a 4.0. And the really messed up thing is that they don't balance it out by giving out A+'s, so 4.0 is the highest we can go.

GL to everyone this coming cycle...I'll be applying too and plan on taking the DAT in August. UW is definitely my first choice but I'll be applying to 10-12 schools.
