good thread for people considering multiple schools

Pretty great post/thread

Although, I'm not sure exactly to go about getting helpful answers to these things (I think someone mentioned this on the thread). I feel like the general answer that any 3rd/4th year is going to give is "yeah, we do some scut, but I've seen/done a lot of cool things -- I like it a lot, I'm learning a lot, I feel prepared for residency, etc"

So it makes sense that when choosing schools, people look at things that they can actually compare (this school is P/F vs this school is H/P/F or this school is urban vs college town) rather than something iffy like "this 4th year said there was some scut work vs this 4th year also said there was some scut work"

ITA, especially with the first paragraph. i'm not sure how to go about getting candid answers to those questions.

Also, how many schools have 3rd or 4th years actively answering questions at interviews? For me, it has only been 2 or 3 schools.

It's mostly M2's who always respond they don't know much about the clinicals.

I agree, its very rare to get a 3rd and 4th year perspective. The only place I have gotten those are at Duke (because of the 1 yr basic sci) and Cleveland Clinic (the 5th years)

Yeah, 2010. Go check if you don't believe me. The 2013ers went on a posting rampage in the summer which is where like almost half of their posts are from.

I actually think it was that month leading up to May 15 mostly; they wanted to have 50k (IIRC) by May 15.

Damn. I can't believe we got beat that bad; at this rate you'll be going for 100k by May 15, easy. Any idea who you made the bet with?

saw someone who had a resection of cancer in their neck all the way up to their ear. Intense...they had to use a flap of skin off the guy's chest.
But at least he was happy.

i love that my bank pays for all my outside ATM fees. i need to take advantage of this by going to gentlemen's clubs and being a standing ATM that charges $1 fee instead of the $4.50

Not a clue. Would have been helpful to write down I suppose.

Hmm, maybe I'll ask a 3rd/4th year a question like "So what exactly do you on the wards as a med student?" and then they could talk about their experiences...and then I'll try to transition into "so is it a lot of scutwork?"

 I've got an interview next week, I'll give it a shot

I am so tired of reading today... I want to take a nap so bad.

So Alabama cancelled classes the day before, of, and after the national championship game. It's obvious where the priorities lie there. I'm a huge football fan and I would skip, but really.

How can people say they're a better academic school above LSU? Also considering the fact that LA residents that can't get into LSU get into Bama OOS. Stupidity.

Brooklyn, whatever happened to Steven A Smith? I haven't seen him on ESPN in forever. He was funny.

It became apparent to everyone that he didn't actually follow sports anymore. I mean he'd show up for the draft show and everything he said, you'd think he was living in the NBA of 3 years ago. He started overcompensating by yelling even more than he used to, and his shtick got old.

I loved when he used to talk about Kwame Brown. Classic.

I'm bored.

on April 17, 2009, [steven a smith] announced on his website that he would be leaving ESPN on May 1, 2009. The Los Angeles Times reported that ESPN commented that, "We decided to move in different directions."

from wiki

stephen A smith stopped doing ESPN and he does politics on CNN (he was always into politics/news). He will get his own show on Fox Radio, most likely

you'll see him on CNN if you keep it on. I was surprised to see him there but they like him

Seriously? That... has to be one of the most surprising job moves I've ever heard. I would have never guessed that.

In any case, now we have an answer for why he didn't seem to know anything about sports towards the end of his run at ESPN; he was too busy keeping up with politics.

I've got "Grandma got run over by a reindeer" stuck in my head

whyyyyy

 please tell me you're joking

bahahaha

i hope FloatOn was NOT joking... that is beyond amazing

I'm pretty sure he was just quoting something actually on FML.

Yup, this is from fml. I'll put quotes around it next time. And if it did happen it me, I think I would start an organization, the SDN Snuggie Foundation. My mission would be to give the snuggies to emotionally-needy pre-meds...because snuggies would boost anyone's confidence.

now it looks like not for a while. i would get bored. maybe march april may. nip tuck tonight

I'm going to miss that show for like the 4th week in a row.

who goes to less class, me or you?

let's compare undergrad:

my senior year roommate and I had 6 classes together before (one was like 13 ppl) and I never knew him because I didn't attend any of those classes besides the introductory one.

I also skipped first day lectures (and every single one then on) for gen chem 2, orgo 2 and physics 1/2.

i cant do lectures at all. one of my interviewers seemed to pick that up (maybe it was in my recs?).

alright your turn

i think we have pretty similar experiences. basically, only go to the classes that are absolutely necessary. i've been doing that from about 3rd to 5th year of college.

I did go to most classes my 1st year of college though. Was trying learn how to be a good student and then I realized lectures= mostly worthless.

yea, same here, i went to just about all classes 1st year, started skipping some 2nd, and didn't bother from 3rd year on.

i always try to go the first week. i usually fail though. it sucks if you have like a french/spanish course in the morning

i always try to skip first week, because it's guaranteed that there's no test first week

wow. thanks for that.

yea, pretty friggin awesome thread. the "hands-on" experience thing the guy talked about is what draws me to Miami a lot, I heard they let you go hands on pretty often. case's match list is pretty amazing, so there must be some reason for that as well.

saw someone who had a resection of cancer in their neck all the way up to their ear. Intense...they had to use a flap of skin off the guy's chest.
But at least he was happy.

that's pretty sweet, did they get all in one sitting?

Should I go to the library to study for my final tomorrow? I haven't started and I would do some hard-core studying until like 2 am and then go back to my place to finish up.

If you're like me, then go to the library! I can't focus at my apartment, so I'm at the library studying for my final tomorrow.

cheap kind. i'm moving out in a few weeks so nothing serious til we get that penthouse in miami

dingy we also get to rock the long white coat in miami, not the short ones.

idk if you went to the cleveland clinic, but i heard the case students who rotate for surgery/sub-specialty get sick letters

oh yea, we're gonna make white the new purple

i didn't get to go to CCF, but man, a letter from them should definitely go a long way

its pretty sick, if i had to guess, it wouldnt be as hands on (thats what my dad told me too) because its a group practice but they have crazy research going on

Yeah I'm going to go now. I'll probably regret it if I don't. Be back around 2.

Brooklyn, it looks like I'll be missing Nip/Tuck again tonight. Promise to give me a synopsis when it's over?
