Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG. The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is hilarious. My mom told me about the tradition with the A&M - Texas game and I'm at that part in the movie. These football players sure can dance well.

i guess I need to watch taht... puttting it on the list right behind The Hangover, Stepbrothers and Titanic.

haha, oh. well the "i'm losing a ton of weight, but not that i mind" comment led me to think otherwise.

So I was shadowing today.
And one of the patients says to me:
"You're a pretty little girl, how old are you? 15?"
ughhhhhhh I need to figure out a way to look my age....

Oh ok, so you're a girl (dr. yoda)

I have a super active metabolism too. I eat more than anyone I know.

False, I in fact eat more than anyone you could possibly know.

I literally gained 5-10 pounds in the last 2-3 weeks of my first block in med school due to compulsive snacking. I've lost it all back and a little more since then, but I've just had to stop buying snack foods altogether; once it's in the house, I have no self-control whatsoever. The downside, of course, is that I'm studying right now and starving 🙁 Plus I have no time to work out right now, so I'm starving AND I'm not losing weight.
🙁
If I had a camera I'd take a picture of my pantry. It's gigantic and I have it pretty much stuffed full of snacks.

Yeah me too. No one ever believes that I'm 20. 🙁
It is kind of a joke between my doc and I. Last week he bet me that we could go for 3 patients without anyone mentioning my age (I looked unusually old...for me that day)...alas...all three patients remarked on how young I looked, one even asked if I was my docs grand-daughter (his daughter is my friend and is also a senior here btws lol)

I've told several of you this already, but I was over at one of the Baylor prof's houses and one of their family members asked me what grade I was in and whether I was thinking of going to college 😛
🙁

Would you like to taunt me some more now?

get used to it girls. its a challenge to get some patients to take me seriously...I think you'll be fine if you have confidence and demand respect.

I'm listening to girl talk. It's high quality. Reminds me of this summer.

I too need real food. Today I have consumed a diet soda, cornuts, and the frosting of two sprinkled krispie kreame donuts. ugh.

Does your doc work in geriatrics? I find they all usually seem to remark how young students look even more often.

Whenever I try to get into a bar, the bouncer always does like a triple-check on my ID. One of them even muttered audibly under his breath, "I guess."

Another time, I was in a cab with my two younger brothers. He guessed I was the youngest and that I was 14

It really doesn't bother me. I act like a little kid too 😛 I'm not ready to grow up.

haha no he is a Head and Neck surgeon.
normally I do act like a little kid but not when I am in the clinic.
haha it was funny today....he and another ENT were prodding me about whether my interview at Emory has changed my mind about my #1....hilarious

Luckily my preceptor is a pediatrician, so I only have to bump my maturity level up to about that of an adolescent 😀

It's hard telling a doc that's been a big help to you that you're hoping for another school 🙁

Oh poo poo. You guys are complaining about it now, but you know just as well as I know that you will be thankful for it by the time you're 40. 😛

haha, it is the first time I've been mistaken for a girl on SDN. I think everyone looks at the googlie eye avatar and assumes I'm a guy.

If it's any consolation, I assumed you were a guy DrYoda. 🙂

Yea. He was indignant when I told him about Duke-the heart stealer.
He is really great though...he gets to actually do stuff...my friends don't get to do that

oh? really? I never heard that one before!

Hey hey, it looks like we have a few regular posters that can join the FB group now...

The doctor I did research with at UT Southwestern apparently fought really hard to get me off the waitlist there and even called me personally to tell me I got in... but Baylor had just completely blown me away at the interview 🙁 I felt really bad having to tell her I was going elsewhere.

I highly recommend the Fountain soundtrack

It's good

The movie was ok, but the soundtrack is one of the best soundtracks ever

You mean the one with Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz? That movie was weird - I had to google the actual meaning and what happened after the movie was over.

Random fact my biochem teacher stated: Those people who lose weight easily and claim to have an overact metabolism, actually have an underactive metabolism. So pretty much they don't metabolize their food as effectively and so much of it isn't utilized and is just eliminated. 🙂

Ah yea bummer!
He calls me Dr. Tatastrophy (using it as a fill in here 😛) around his residents and nurses lol and since the revelation of Duke-front-runnery he introduces me to colleagues by saying "I want you to meet Tatastrophy, we are trying to convince her to chose Emory over Duke for med school next year"
I seriously love shadowing with him!

That... makes perfect sense, I'd just never thought of it that way.

Sounds awesome 🙂 Is Emory in second place?

yeah the movie was nuts and I got really lost. BUT, I just downloaded the soundtrack cause I was reading some hype on it (while watching the movie I was distracted by the bald floating Hugh Jackman)...and as it turns out the soundtrack is pretty awesome. epic modern classical stuff.

actually my doc might have gotten what he wants
I am kind of in a post apocalyptic fog right now....I really really liked Emory.
But I am not sure now if I liked it more or less than Duke you know?

This sounds quite amazing.

Taty, you should use your amazing Emory pull to get me an interview. 🙄

I've read this too during research for a recent paper. People who gain weight quickly are more adapted to living in near-starvation conditions. Their bodies utilize food better than others.

I just wish my body wasn't so terribly efficient. 🙁

Absolutely. Felt the same way about UTSW and Baylor. If I hadn't already found a place to live in Houston by the time UTSW called, I'm not sure what I would have done. After both of my interviews, I had the "I absolutely want to go there next year" feeling.

Anyways, getting into either of those schools would be an incredible achievement; should you find yourself getting to make a choice, that would be a very pleasant problem to have 🙂

I just learned this from a friend earlier this week. Strange coincidence. Also, I have a question about the logic:

Does underactive mean-
a) The body's cells get the nutrients, but allow them to pass right back into the system as waste?
b) The body's digestive system is less efficient and the nutrients are never even delivered to the cells in the first place.

My favorite holiday beer (it's ridiculously expensive though):

umm, it could also be higher catabolic rate than anabolic rate comparatively too, no?

That's my educated guess. We're doing GI right now.
