Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've become quite the insomniac. Just from being lazy and deciding to pull all-nighters. My circadian cycle is non-existant. It's getting bad. And the ambien doesn't do anything for me anymore.

Yeah that part looks nuts. Why don't they just throw it the speed they want it, though?

It's tough because it's such a long distance. The key part is the spin because the thing actually curves on the ice. The sweepers can also alter the spin by sweeping ice onto the path slightly to the side. It gets really intense, my church took a curling trip and it took us all two hours just to get like one point. Fun times though, lots of falling on ice.

I just posted on your Facebook wall.. it's weird when SDN crosses in to RL... but not really that weird I guess.
It's always nice to see people are real though. lol. It's less like I'm just a nutjob talking to imaginary people on the internet 🙂

I honestly don't know. I've literally only been curling once. The way they taught it was that you had to spin it 2-4 rotations for the entire length. So you're spinning it very slowly. What's awesome about curling in Canada is that you can go 5-pin bowling afterwords and you can drink legally at age 19!!!! (Which is awesome for underclassmen like me!)

I'm a 4 a.m.er as well. I think humans are like prosimians and we're meant to be nocturnal i.e. the whole late night party scene.

Court looks like this:

Basically, you want to get your rocks in the middle of the red thing. As far as I can tell, the whole circle is called a "house." After each team throws a certain number of stones (like 8), the team with the closest stone gets 1 point for every stone that is closer than the opponents' closest stone. You can't get points if the stones aren't within the outer circle no matter what.

The surface is basically a smooth sheet of ice that gets sprayed with water droplets, which get frozen. They call the surface "pebbled."

The guy throwing the rock has to be behind a certain line on the court when he releases it. The stone has to get beyond a certain line for it to stay on the court.

The stone basically always spins slightly. The sweepers sweep in front of it to melt the little pebbled water droplets and increase speed and also keep it going straight (or try to make it curl if necessary).

All the yelling is the captain guy telling the sweepers if the line is good. The sweepers are supposed to keep the speed correct on their own.

EDIT: You usually go for like 8-10 rounds of this.

That sounds about right. Obviously the teams alternate turns. And it's absolutely hilarious when a sweeper such as myself loses balance and completely eats it on the pebbled ice. You can also use different weights of stones (the thing being thrown) based on how hard you throw and if you want to knock the other teams stones off and what-not. It makes for a good time, but it's Canadian and I'm too scared to cross the border :scared:. Not worth getting my car torn apart to go curling.

Watching curling. Now I need to read the rules.

Watching Canada v Denmark right now (West Coaster) and watching Canada get 5 points in a round was kinda of 😱 I want to try, but the nearest curling club to me is an hour away. 🙁

Yep, I'm watching that also. Do they go 8 ends or 10?

I watched Denmark beat the US in the 11th round on the last stone. 🙁

When was that on?

Was that the one where Shuster completely blew the last shot? Also, any surprise that Shuster get's benched and we finally win one?

Denmark conceded the game after going down 7 points in the 6th end.

Damn, a sport where even at the Olympic level there's more honor in conceding an obviously lost game than dragging it out? I'm liking this more and more.

Thursday, during the day (probably like noonish your time). It was round robin play (not sure if that's still going on). For curling, it was pretty intense.

I think so. He hit a Den stone which flew into a US stone and knocked the US stone out and stopped the Den stone cold in its track...which was basically near the bulls eye.

JJ - I believe they went 11 rounds in this particular match because they were tied? Otherwise I'm not sure how many rounds it typically lasts.

Ok. trying again...

Goodnight (hopefully for the last time 🙂)

Although this time I DO need to wake up in 3 hours.

Yeah, I think that's right. The match I just watched ended in 10.

Morning all.

That's hysterical about the balls 🙂 I didn't eat too terribly today, and I even did some exercises! Nothing too major, but something. It's taking me awhile to get back the motivation of actually going to the gym.

But the gym is fun!!!

I scheduled myself to work all weekend and in hopes of accelerating to Monday/Tuesday as fast as possible

I have two exams next week. I want to keep the weekend around as long as possible.
