Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
u like washu that much?

I did like it a lot. It's a nice school.

go to the hopkins one! there will be cooler people (read: me) there. doesn't washu allow you to visit on your own and follow someone around? (i might be making that up).

washu may still end up being a good deal sans merit money just because of their debt reduction initiative. i have no idea how good jhu's financial aid is - i've seen contradictory things on sdn.

i think jhu was my favorite school but baltimore is not my favorite place :meanie: so i think i am hoping i can stay in boston next year.

Hmm good point!! I forgot about that shadowing thing. Too many decisions to make. Maybe I'll call the WashU peeps and see what can be done. I still think I'm going to wait awhile before deciding though. It's a toughie. I know people at both schools, though the JHUers would definitely be more welcoming (WashU guy is an ex bf... haha). But I suppose I can get an inside opinion from all of them.

hi all.
bought grad regalia today.
the lady was like.....90 bucks...is that ok?
I replied with...gotta graduate don't I.
lol

with that, i take the #1 spot on the class of 2014 thread. i'd like to thank everyone for showing up to the brooklynshow

exciting time!! 🙂 when is your graduation tata?!
it is still quite a bit away-May 10th but they made a big deal about getting the regalia ASAP.

when I got to lab though...one of the PhD candidates thought it would be appropriate to make fun of the fact that Arnold Schwarzenegger is our commencement speaker and that 99% of Emory students are useless leaches on their parents.
I mean like seriously?! You are going to try and argue that there are only 4 people receiving financial aid here? Get over yourself foo'!

dont let him get to ypu, i know for a fact yhat there are at least 5!

I second the opinion on Intern Blues. It is depressing because the interns end up clinically depressed. I got so enraged that the medical education system let them down and didn't take care of them as people (just my naive view of it). To me, its a cautionary tale about learning to balance work/life and finding the moments to be happy. I like (read: hope) to think that residency is different now.

same same same same. It's also depressing because you realize that medicine isn't immune to stupid human drama. I really hope that residency has progressed to the point where you don't have to fight with nurses and lab techs every day to get anything done, but that's probably naive.

Hihihi!

metallica, is your toe ok?

It's ok. Not much better, but not worse. It's not like black or blue or anything. I probably just bruised the crap out of it and it will stop hurting in a couple of days.
Congrats Brooklyn.

I'm #8,

Looks like 0C has managed to stay in the top 10 after all this time.

 Yeah I know. I really wonder when he'll finally get knocked out.

Congrats! How long was Blue in the #1 spot?

Haven't eaten anything

I'm making haphazard decisions regarding personal relationships

I have to teach a class tonight that I picked up last minute

Blehh

Why haven't you eaten anything today?? You need to get on that mister.

We had PB&J Day at the Capitol today, so I got a free fried PB&J that was yummy. It was the first time I've ever had a fried sandwich like that before.

No reason to decide until May 15th.

😱
That is absolutely nuts.

I don't care really other than he wasted my valuable experiment time because I think in his head he thought he was going to convince me to agree with him. There are very few people as stubborn and determined as I am and you do not change my mind by spewing complete nonsense!

I just had some oatmeal. That's always a pick-me-up
mmmmmmm oatmeal!

You have to defend a thesis in undergrad?
for honors program at Emory too. And yes-you graduate with one of these:

  • cum laude, "with honor" (direct translation: "with praise")
  • magna cum laude, "with great honor" (direct translation: "with great praise")
  • summa cum laude, "with highest honor" (direct translation: "with highest praise")
depending on how awesome your thesis is.

Oh, interesting. We get one of those based on our GPA.

We get an honors course distinction for completing enough honors classes, which I'll get. I opted not to get the higher distinction for doing a thesis also. I still get a cord.

Ohhh. Do you get some distinction on your diploma?

Yeah, and we get to wear a hood at graduation.

Oh, interesting. We get one of those based on our GPA.

Us too. The honors stuff is completely separate. I'd hate to have them judging how good my thesis is. I'm just trying to get through it.

That's basically how ours is. Two levels. Though I'm not sure the distinction people get cords here. Maybe.

Yea....we get nothing for just having a high GPA...which makes sense for some depts that give out As like they are going out of style...not so much Chem.
I was doing the honors thesis up until this semester-none of the grad class choices were appealing enough to put up with the pain and I don't really want that pressure on my research anyway. No big deal though. My GPA speaks for itself I think and I am still going to med school.

Sammich-our honors students get patches on their shoulder...suh-weet!

Weird how every school is different. Not really fair that I just have to sit there and do nothing and magically get the fancy latin. Sorry guys. 😳

No big deal.
If cords is the only thing people are doing it for...I feel bad for those suckas.
I am one of like 30 Chem seniors graduating and I also have a feeling that Comp Lit dept is going to make a big deal out of me (science student excelling in the dept) from the way my adviser has been talking...so I am not lacking attention. lol

determining honors here is most mysterious. no one ever really knows until the week before we graduate...each major determines their own criteria for assigning english honors, and depending on your GPA and on what level of english honors you are recommended for determines your latin honors, but there are ways of bypassing departmental recommendation to just get cum laude if your gpa is high enough...

basically harvard got its panties in a bunch about 10 years ago when grade inflation and honors came under scrutiny, and decided to make things really complicated so that no one could understand (or criticize) them

Yup, us too.

I didn't feel like writing a thesis, so I dropped Honors. I technically had enough honors classes for Sophomore Distinction, but they didn't give it to me because I didn't take 1 certain class.

Yeah. But I'm totally okay with just sitting here and getting the Latin. I would like to stay in my latin range that I've been in the entire time, though - that's why I'm still kind of trying to get Bs and 1 A.

well before they did that, wasn't it something like 90% of people were graduating with some sort of honors?

yeah something like that. they have percentage caps now (i think it's like 50% with any kind of distinction)
