Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Weird how every school is different. Not really fair that I just have to sit there and do nothing and magically get the fancy latin. Sorry guys. 😳

that's how mine is too-cum laude is 3.4-3.6, magna is 3.6-3.8, summa is 3.8-4.0. i was surprised how few people got the distinctions though (they show up as stars next to your name in the graduation program), so i guess it's not super easy, but still way easier than those of you who have to do thesis stuff...that's crazy!

i'm on hold for spring consideration at downstate...blah

i think it's time to send another round of loi's to the many, many schools i'm wl'ed at. i kind of just want to be done with it all and make a choice based on the 2 options i'm lucky enough to have, but at the same time i feel like i should at least see if any other schools are even a possibility before i make a final decision. that reasoning probably makes no sense, but oh well.

met, I just looked and our graduation speaker is Lombardi. How lame is that?

Edit: That's the LSU system president for those of you not at LSU. Haha.

haha i was thinking vince lombardi, which would be pretty sweet if he weren't dead.

no it makes sense. Im in the same boat. Happy with my acceptances and I have 2 schools i really loved. However Im still waiting on 2 others to make decisions. I want to know 100% where im going so i can plan, waiting till june is going to be no fun 🙁

ah man that sucks about downstate. this seems to be a crappy couple of weeks for most of us. I stopped checking my mailbox...just not worth it.

Sorry about being put on hold at Downstate.

Also, our honors are given out the same way, based on GPA.

Oh that's super lame. I think that solidifies me not going to big speaking part then. You can go to just the degree part, right?

That's a pretty big range of stuff. Maybe when most people at the school are engineering, though, the GPA is not as high overall.

Our ranges are 3.7, 3.8 for Magna, 3.9 for Summa.

exactly, glad you understand🙂 we'll have to try and keep each other sane during these long months of waiting!

thanks for all the support guys. we're like one, big, happy, slightly disfunctional family😛

Congrats Brooklyn.

I'm #8,

Looks like 0C has managed to stay in the top 10 after all this time.

how do you know who's in the top 10?!!

for honors program at Emory too. And yes-you graduate with one of these:

  • cum laude, "with honor" (direct translation: "with praise")
  • magna cum laude, "with great honor" (direct translation: "with great praise")
  • summa cum laude, "with highest honor" (direct translation: "with highest praise")
depending on how awesome your thesis is.

interesting, we didnt have the cum mega summa cum laude stuff, they make it sound wayy fancier..

this makes sense we had >3.5 as honors and >3.8 as highest honors so its kinda similar to the above distinctions 🙂

determining honors here is most mysterious. no one ever really knows until the week before we graduate...each major determines their own criteria for assigning english honors, and depending on your GPA and on what level of english honors you are recommended for determines your latin honors, but there are ways of bypassing departmental recommendation to just get cum laude if your gpa is high enough...

basically harvard got its panties in a bunch about 10 years ago when grade inflation and honors came under scrutiny, and decided to make things really complicated so that no one could understand (or criticize) them

Works every time.
haha i was thinking vince lombardi, which would be pretty sweet if he weren't dead.

lol, same here.

you too elijah 😉

They do. I graduated HS with Magna Cum Laude....part of me wishes I could get it again. Eh. I would much rather break the 100 hours of service this year.

thanks! between evms and penn state, i'm 90% sure it'll be evms unless something crazy happens with financial aid-i just like the location way better. as far as the ones i'm waitlisted at:

-dartmouth is my top choice and i'll definitely go there if accepted.
-downstate's probably next due to financial reasons (at least 100k less than everywhere but dartmouth) and i love nyc.
-georgetown's third-i'd definitely go there over evms/penn state

then as far as einstein, uvm, wake, and temple it's really a toss up and i like them all for different reasons. i could really see myself at any of them and don't know if i'd go to them over evms.

i'm still very much confused and up in the air as you can see!😛

zona-that's encouraging news! i hope we both get accepted straight off the hold🙂 do you know when they go back and look at the hold list?

With all the waitlists in here, I sense some serious movement will happen around April or so.

So who here has a school they would drop everything to attend if you were accepted after May 15th? I know I do. :xf:

Not quite sure to be honest. I guess anything after March 20 is fair game is it is officially spring. 😕

Found this gem at the top of the comments section of a USNews article:

Best place for dating a med school student?

I am a 30-year old IT/biotech entrepreneur with a PhD in biophysics who made a few million developing successful start up businesses. Now it is time to learn something new and start looking for an ideal match to spend the rest of the life with.

I am thinking about applying to one of the top med schools and trying to find a good-looking and smart Caucasian fellow MD student.

Any tips on which med school has the highest number of Caucasian female students?

Nice! i know what you mean, hope it all works out for the best at the end and im sure it will 🙂

that's funny. never pictured med school to be a place to get that good ole "mr(s). degree."

I never thought of that either, but now that you mention it...I wouldn't fight it too hard if I met a Dr. Carter or Kovach in med school as long as I could keep my career independently as well 😉

Hurry up and get into Dartmouth so that we can be classmates!! 😀

 does anyone know if that youth in revolt movie was any good?

It's just too much work for that... 😛

Seriously! Although, I can envision an interesting reality show based on this concept. "For the Love of Med" could be the title. Tagline: Watch as real med students compete not only for AOA membership but also for the physician spouse of their dreams. (I'm trying to be gender neutral to account for all relationship preferences.)

Ahhhh but to have one's cake and eat it too is difficult, my grasshopper.

Just got waitlisted at Vanderbilt. This one definitely stings the most.

I don't know. Whenever there's a piece of cake in front of me, I eat it. I'm not just going to let it sit there.

Hmmmm (imagine with a wise old person voice)....But then you don't "have it" anymore??

Granted its in your belly, but not in its original form. I would eat it too, a love a good cake.

But really, what good is having a cake if you can't eat it?

I know, that is the unfortunate part of being an academic female who's interested in both a healthy family life and a fulfilling career. For now I am just overlooking the personal life, but I hope I don't come to regret that when I'm 40 and single with a house full of cats 😎

But really, what good is having a cake if you can't eat it?

well thats the conundrum ain't it!

don't tell my enemies, if you wanted to torture me, this would be how. put a piece of delicious, chocolately, fudgy, yum yum cake in front of me and not let me eat it. i would go crazzzyyy.

...i just can't sleep. i'm so excited, i'm in too deep....

wow, sorry, musical moment.

40 + single means you are a cat, a cougar that is.

Hahahaha, you crack me up!!! A little too much coffee today? I hope we get to meet someday- you seem like a fun person 😀

Reminds me of that video of kids who get a marshmallow or a cookie placed in front of them and are told that if they don't eat it, they'll get two later. ... and then the kids go agonizingly crazy. I saw it one of my psych classes but I think Sammich posted it on here a while ago

i was shaking this morning i had too much! it felt like an out of body experience.

awww shucks thanks 😳 but if you're off to hopkins, i'm not allowed near there w/ a 2,000 mile pole. they told me so.
