Nah, I bet every respectable school has that type of system. I think my school doesn't realize how much it hurts its students by this grading technique. Hopefully things will change as Oakland grows though. They need to build more dorms. They overcrowd the dorms assuming students will drop and some do, but some don't leaving to some overcrowded rooms. They are building a new health sciences building which was a long-time coming especially because that is the bread and butter of Oakland University. They also remodeled the basement of the current Library to have a couple med-school rooms, but hopefully they change the we close at 8p.m. rule for the med-students.

Chrome's built-in ad blocker is pretty good, I just don't like how it minimizes it so you'll sometimes have to look for it when you have many tabs open. Firefox was too bulky for me and crashed way too often. Haven't had a real crash yet in Chrome since each tab is handled like a separate application.

As much as I love talking about grading, I don't, so I'm going to bed now...kind of. I just need to get off my computer. Maybe I'll strum some chords on the git-tar. Btw, I ended up purchasing the Klean Kanteen in pink. Yay for no more plastic water bottles and destroying the earth.

Not quite. It's grown a lot recently. No football team though, so it's hard to get the name across, but the med-school is helping a lot, there's tons of new bio majors. It's probably 4th or 5th just in the state of Michigan, honestly I hadn't heard of Oakland till my counselor told me I could get a good scholarship from there, so I sent the app and it turned out to be the cheapest possible. This is my ranking of Michigan Universities by academics: UMich, Mich State, Wayne State, Oakland, Central Mich almost same level as Oakland, Western Mich, Eastern Mich, etc. I think Oakland is stealing a lot of the Oakland county kids who would have gone to Wayne State, but are scared of Detroit.
 
Oakland's gotten a lot bigger in the past 6-7 years. I had some friends that lived in the dorms there 5-6 years ago and the dorms were empty. Now they don't have enough.

Parking has become brutal too. You're lucky to park in a lot close to your class. If you don't get on campus 15 minutes before class there is a good chance you will be late due to parking especially if you are coming between 10a.m.-2p.m.
 
Honestly though, I can't think of a school with 10k+ people that I've visited that isn't like that. It's a sign of growth (and a looming fee increase to pay for more parking structures). 👍

For sure. We don't have to pay for parking 😛 and Wayne State students do!!! But yeah, I like seeing the campus growing. It's definitely gone through some growing pains, there was a massive strike Fall Semester that shut down campus for a week. It was scary because you literally didn't know if you were going to have classes that semester. But I think they have it worked out.

Question: I know the way Oakland does funding is that a researcher applies for a grant. The grant is received and then 1/3 of the grant is essentially given straight to the University itself. There are other fees and what-not, i.e. a percentage is given to the animal facility and the different research relevant departments who chart MSDS's and other things, and then the rest is put on an account in the name of the professor on a school finances card (I'm guessing it's either a credit or debit card). This card can only be used to purchase research relevant things, i.e. my PI got yelled at when he got an oil change with this card. Now when the department a researcher is a part of purchases something large like a microscope or a fume hood etc, the school pulls a percentage from every researcher in that department in order to pay for it.

Is this similar at other institutions, or do they just keep all their grant money and pay small fees to the school? I just remember a big part of the strike was wanting even dispersal of grants as well as the OU name on something research correlated. Another part was the fact that OU wanted to stop hiring PhD's and hire more Master's degree teachers and that would in a sense lower the quality of instruction, but I guess it's still better than t.a's teaching classes.

That's no good. You said your boss is privy to your co-workers ways though, right? So don't worry too much. Just do your best to ignore it and then stay above it.

morning. that blows. we got 8 inches in about 6 hours last weekend while I was on a fly fishing trip. fish don't care....wtf.

Feeling great actually...I never get hang overs, please don't hate lol
I drank SoCo 100 proof...the same stuff that got me in trouble the last time but I was good and moderate this time 😀
Read couple of my posts from last night and sooooo glad that I fell asleep before the truth/dare escalated into something embarrassing!!!


Everyone else: yea my boss knows that my coworker has issues and she has no problem with me. It is just annoying at this point.
 
does anyone else actually convince themselves you want to go somewhere when you write a loi? i feel like i want to go everywhere at the same time haha. i wish i could combine all the best aspects of all the schools i've been too, but unfortunately that's impossible. i'm sure i'll be super happy wherever i end up, but it's really hard to let go of the idea of going to certain schools!

Well, I have officially signed up to retake the MCAT! I'm preparing for the worst case scenario that I don't get into medical school this year, and I am going to improve my application as much as possible for resubmission this June! In a weird way, it's almost empowering to start getting my application together again because it gives me a plan of action. 🙂

SoCo isn't bad...what I was drinking before was VILE...its called sweet tea something...all I know it had sooo much alcohol and I could not keep a straight face from the after taste

Hey y'all,
I post on this thread like never, but I'm stressing about a situation and my friends are sick of hearing about it b/c none of them are pre-meds and can't relate. I just got a surprise acceptance off the waitlist to a school that represents a fantastic opportunity for me and would be good for my husband and family. But... I had kinda written it off b/c I didn't expect to get in and had already decided to go to this other school that I love and feel is a great fit. Now I'm frustrated b/c I was happy and confident in my decision and ready to move forward, but this acceptance really threw me off.

It's like when you've just started seeing this great new guy, and the ex you still have feelings for shows up and cries about what a mistake he made.

It's probably going to come down to financial aid, which neither school has provided yet. In the meantime, I have a fantastic housing opportunity at the school I decided on before this new acceptance, but I have to act on it soon or lose it. And that will probably happen before I get fin aid info from either school.
