goncrats!

i think i'd have to (1) see financial aid stuff-- which is scary because i've heard of at least a couple of instances where the dean said he'd offer a spot in the class if the person could commit on the spot 😱 and (2) go visit again-- i've heard a lot about how competitive columbia is. and i'm not sure i'd want to move up to WaHi.

Yeah, I totally understand that. Here's my two cents:

1) I've heard nothing but great things about financial aid. That's the beauty of a massive endowment.

2) I had heard that too, but I didn't get the vibe, and current students said it's not like that at all. They really couldn't understand where that perception came from. Un-ranked P/F for the first 1.5 preclinical years.

3) Yeah, WaHi is less than awesome in that it's so far away. I'm thinking of moving off campus after first year. Apparently a decent number of students do.

oh wow, 20k grant and 15k of school loan from case, now this complicates things

ugh, god no. i hate those threads. i even hate the threads where it *is* a decision but people end up just voting with no comments. it's only helpful if a meaningful discussion of the schools happens.

agreed.

its just you :meanie:

have you ever caught a glimpse of your reflection in the middle of night and then slightly panicked thinking there was an intruder in your room. oh nope, lol, it was just my hand....

wait, is grant like scholarship? or is it like something i have to do work to earn?

Congrats!! 😀

Those school loans can really sweeten the deal... something I never thought about even 3 or 4 months ago was the significant difference between a 6.8% unsubs. Stafford vs. a 5%, no interest until a year after graduation school loan.

i feel like all students at all schools say how cooperative and non-competitive their school is. i'm not sure if this means all school are non-competitive, or if it's just something people say. or if the only students eager to speak to premeds are really enthusiastic about their school.

anyway, i'm not counting on an acceptance by any means. but i think i'll have a hard decision to make if i do get one. for some reason my gut is telling me to be afraid of columbia and go to sinai

omg, i know! the (small amount) of loans i have to take out are mostly sinai loans. and those don't earn interest *or* have to be paid back until residency ends. holy frickin moly.

show off :annoyed: :meanie:

Whoa, lots of stuff happening lately. I feel behind on it.

In other words, after I pay my utility bills I will have a total of $17 to my name.

Stupid freaking eBay, I have almost $500 on hold in PayPal because the douche who bought my guitar hasn't left feedback yet.

Thanks for all the congrats! Man, now I'm pretty confused, but in a good way

Grant=Scholarship=Free money. Often they call need-based scholarships grants, but that may not be all schools.

Thanks! That sounds awesome!

dingy are you thinking of moving to the still thinking category now?!

Yup, I'm now back to the thinking stage, gonna have to talk to Miami and see what they can offer me. Hopefully they'll have more incentive to keep me now with their Boca campus debacle 😀

if both schools were free, where would you go?

Yeah, and there's no reason not to take the full value of the subsidized school loans, since if it comes to repayment time and you didn't need it, you can just hand it back free of charge.

As it currently stands, with my fiancée's stipend included, our debt should be in the upper 5-figures, with about 80% of it interest-free until graduation.

1. congrats (not important)
2. wtffffff, i thought u said it was gonna be all loans. i didnt even reply to stay back on the alternate list 🙁
3. i'm gonna use pictures:

i was waiting for someone to "go there" on the adhd/medicine and it finally happened. its wasn't over the top but it may draw some criticism...now just waiting for hot air and cold air fronts to hit for a mega-storm.

RD,

You talking about my last post. ?? 😀 I thought it was a great opportunity for the Ackward Turtle.

Nah it just bugs me. My interests are in Neurology/Psych/Neurosurger. etc.. I spent a summer as a research intern at the NYU Child Study Center of NYU Med. It was one of my favorite ECs. Some of the kids with ADHD and ADD were seriously brilliant. They just process differently. I dunno. I dont think it was all that dramatic. lol

Ha, I had no idea about loans, the finaid officer was like preggo or something when I went to the interview there so the admissions guy just read the finaid pamphlet to us, not helpful at all.

BTW, you didn't have to label the pictures, I can tell which is which :laugh:

But yea, I'd love living in Miami, but now I have some leverage to negotiate with both schools 👍
