Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It's really confusing to be going to a school with so much pride in their athletic teams, while not actually having good athletic teams.

I'm used to the Iowa City attitude toward the Hawkeyes - yeah, we're really good. That's the way it is. Michigan just has tons of hype with very little in the way of actual results.

Debating wearing my black and gold to the Michigan homecoming... :meanie: Obviously Iowa will win, the only question is if it will get me beat up by my classmates.

too bad ucd doesnt have any real sports. That was one thing if i went to uw mad i would def be at some badger/packers games and it would have been sweet. I could go to niner games i guess, though i have no idea how far it is from me lol

I feel your pain.

Not really. It depends. The name on the ticket doesn't have to match the name on the student ID so you could theoretically sell them to another student for as much as they're willing to pay. Just don't get caught (not really sure how people get caught btw) or they take away ticket privileges.

Still not legal in LA to scalp. You could always sell a really expensive pencil and throw in the ticket for free.

Also, I have no idea what I'm going to do when the non-televised LSU games come around. Hopefully I'll be able to find them on ESPN online or something. I'll die otherwise!

i feel like michigan will lose to UCONN in the opener

I completely agree.

idk about that, I feel like this is the year rich rod proves his mettle.

I feel your pain.

Do you guys get ESPN3 over there? I sometimes use channelsurfing when worse comes to worst.

I am wearing nothing but orange to the Illinois-Iowa games. If I stop posting all of a sudden sometime in December you can guess what will have happened.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the "$150 LSU pencil for sale! Included are 2 free student tickets to the LSU-Florida game" ads. LSU sports actually issued warnings about buying pencils and stuff.

I might just go to the non-televised ones (if I can get tickets of course). I think I would rather watch the non-televised games in person and watch the big games that I have slim chance of getting tickets to on TV. Of course I wouldn't turn down tickets to ANY LSU game unless life was just crapping all over me at the moment.

Iowa fans aren't crazy rabid, but you'll definitely get some dirty looks. Just don't piss any drunk people off.

Will they assualt you with ears of corn? Corn stalks?

Or do they prefer shotguns?

Hey now, don't generalize all Iowans as corn farmers, it marginalizes those of us who are truly from hick farming families. 😛

And anyway, almost half of Iowa undergrads are from Illinois anyway, so... meh.

Iowa 1,812 students
Illinois 1,358 students
Minnesota 120 students
Wisconsin 93 students
etc.

I've heard UIowa called "University of Illinois - Iowa City campus" several times.

I never thought about that, but it makes sense. I've never been to Iowa but after driving 10+ hours through Illinois in the past week I would assume they are quite similar.

Does Iowa smell as fertilized as Illinois? :barf:

Try this new review book that just came out from Harvard:

Vijay's Underground Guide to Medical Biochemistry and Metabolic Disease (with a foreword by Dr. Rick Mitchell - associate director of HST at Harvard Medical School).

The book is now available on amazon.com and you can also see a preview of the book along with student reviews on their website:

www.vijaysundergroundguides.com

Here's the link to the amazon.com website where you can order a copy:

Thanks!

I actually was worried about this one specific thing that I don't have to worry about for 2 more years!

I'd say 80% of Illinois is exactly like Iowa. The other 20% is the Chicagoland area.

And yes, both states are heavily fertilized. You get used to the smell, though, it's not that bad. 😛

By the way, sorry to the Louisiana residents here from an Iowan whose family does a great deal of farming. We've been killing your fishies for quite some time... 🙁

It's okay. You gots to do what you gots to do. I can't tell you how many times I've learned about eutrophification and harmful algal blooms in undergrad with my marine biology and ecology concentration.

I'll just blame Arkansas and Minnesota, how about that?

Haha sounds good... they really are trying to improve the system though, one of my dad's ag magazines had a front-page article about new fertilizers and techniques that prevent runoff and break down faster before reaching the Gulf. It's a big problem that they're continually working on.

Besides, using more fertilizer and having it all run off the field after every heavy rainfall is a complete waste of money and time for everyone involved.

That sure is the truth.

One thing I hate is when LA residents blame the dirtiness of the river on the farming up north, and while that is a big portion, the main blame is the silt the river carries. Now the factories dumping stuff in the river up north doesn't help anybody, but LA will never have clean looking water anywhere around the state and people just need to get that in their heads.

Farming and factories certainly don't help, but I doubt the Mississippi has ever been "clean", as in clear of debris and silt. When you run a gigantic river through some of the richest, softest black dirt in the world, you will have a muddy river with lots of silt. 😛

👍 i wonder how they are going to roll this season out considering how the last one ended

The trailer for Season 5 is coming out tonight. I'll try to post the link here if I find one.

Did not know that. Why Laplace? There's absolutely nothing exciting there.

Yeah, that's what I was saying.

iowa city is the most educated city in the country btw

Interesting. Probably because everybody in the town either goes to school or works for it.

IC is an awesome place... very similar feel to Ann Arbor and other smaller university towns. Choosing Michigan over my home state school was a really, really hard call. I have a lot of friends who will be starting at Carver this fall, and it would have been fun to be classmates with them.

These occasional forks in the road are interesting, because I really don't think there are right or wrong choices. No doubt I would have a different life if I was in IC for the next four years... different friends, different professors, etc. Very weird to think about. Sometimes you gotta make the call and go with it... 👍

They are living in the past🙁, at one time they were good an now it's just carry over. At least it's not to the extreme of Notre Dame.

Illinois outside of Chicago is just terrible. terrible. Endless corn and endless flatness.

F*ck my life. Lost my wallet on the walk home from work. There goes my license which is gonna be a pain to replace seeing as how I'm 10 hours from home. And my credit and debit cards (will have to be mailed to my house then to here so that's like 2 weeks). And my car insurance card. And my health insurance cards. And cash. And my LSU ID (which I can't replace 🙁) So basically the only thing I have on me proving that I even exist is a passport. I can't drive anywhere. I can't go out anywhere. And I have like zero ways to procure any cash to get me through the weekend. Luckily I don't carry all my cash with me, but basically I'm screwed.

And I was supposed to drive to Wisconsin tomorrow to visit my favorite third year med student for the weekend, but now I can't.

ill patrol the river to see if it swam up the river, cuz wallets totally do that in BP oil mixed water. i expect a reward

That sucks but I would just drive anyways. I've driven my car tons of times without actually having my license in the vehicle with me. oops.

Oh THAT's why...the whole time we were driving through LA my mom kept noting how the rivers all look dirty and we tried to come up with explanations for it lol.

Damn I'm so sorry ksmi! That really sucks 🙁 Never fun to go through all the hoops etc. to get everything sorted out... but like BB said - maybe someone will return it? I would if I found it! :xf:

Hey, at least it didn't happen during the school year, woulda been even more of a pain! Besides, you can still drive, just gotta practice your eyelash-batting skills a little bit 🙂

I've driven sans license before. Only time I've ever been pulled over. Not a fun experience. Didn't get ticketed but I'd rather not go through all that mess again. Especially not in a state that's not mine.

👍 I like taking risks... but this is a bit out there even for me. Don't risk that fo shizzle

Ouch. I've never gotten pulled over sans license which is probably why I have yet to learn my lesson :X

I got into an accident without my license... 3 blocks from my dorm room. 😳

I called my roommate and he literally ran it to the scene of the accident. The cop looked at me weird, but I didn't get in trouble for some reason. Good ol' small town cops.

$80 for a htpc is pretty good. im guessing you aren't going for a smaller case?

everyone at lab uses a mac desktop/or mac book pro. i cant afford a new mac (plus i already bought a netbook, which is good for browsing/note taking, but sucks for data work). i kinda want to build a hackintosh cheap desktop. anyone know where to start?

http://lifehacker.com/321913/build-a-hackintosh-mac-for-under-800

Under $800 isn't so cheap I'd guess...

Rest assured it will turn out different.

I just woke up and it was awesome sleeping so late!

You seem so sure about that.

I've heard that a lot of accidents tend to happen pretty close to home.
