Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Miami is GREAT! 🙂 I'm really liking it here so far. I'm still getting everything unpacked though. How's New Orleans?

The same. Hot as hell.

I just swept and swiffered my entire apartment. Hooray for productivity. Never realized how big this place is until I had to clean the whole thing.

According to the weather report, it's hotter over there in New Orleans than it is here! Heck, it was hotter in my hometown than it is here.

First full day of orientation down! 😀

Yay! 👍

So on a random note, I think I'm going to invest in some sort of Spanish tutorial...

Spanish tutorial would not be a bad idea at all, especially if you didn't take it in high school or college.

If I would have ended up at Baylor I would have tried to bootleg Rosetta Stone and learn Spanish.

 Truth.

I was reading the "how do you pay for food and rent during med school" thread and came across the concept of food stamps.

I went on LA's food stamp website and did a little survey/tool thing, and apparently I'm elligible for like $200/month in food stamps. I'm also elligible for expedited delivery within 7 days because my resources are so low (I only have $32 in the bank right now ). Interesting...

WUMP (Wash U Medical Plunge - weirdest name ever) time!!!

See you kids in the afternoon. Don't miss me too much.

I doubt we'd make it in a day, but just maybe, so I'll point it out. Don't miss post 111111!!!!

WUMP is the awesomest name ever 🙂 So you're having fun?? whoo!

Hmm... this is interesting - $200 / mo is a lot... is the main requirement based on how much $ is in your bank account?

That's part of it. Another part is how much income you have, which is 0 as a med student.

I don't think I'll go through with it - it just feels immoral. That being said, $200 is like almost twice as much as I spend on groceries each month.

I duno dude - this is what I paid taxes for no? I wouldn't feel bad about taking advantage of it :meanie: Unfortunately, my (tiny) savings in bank account will disqualify me 🙁

I'd do it if I could. Honestly, I'd rather my taxes fund support for students who are going to eventually stop needing support than the group that perpetually draws aid.

True. I'll look into it more. I would only be able to do it for a year anyway because the whole marriage thing will skew my finances.

Hmmm... That's very interesting... I wonder how many students actually do this...

Yea man, I'm def gonna be brushing up on my Spanish...last time I walked around in Miami I swear I didn't hear a single person speaking English, which isn't all that inconceivable considering zipskinny says that my area is 90+% hispanic

My internet is being stupid. It works in my room, but it won't work in the living room (which is where the modem and router are).

I still don't have my own internet yet... I'm thinking about getting one of those Verizon cards so that I could get internet just about anywhere.

This could be the one time where not having savings (well I did but they're gone now) could be beneficial.

lol damn, maybe i should move some money out of my account so i can get food stamps too. but then i'd kinda feel like cheating the system 😳

Goood Morning :hello:

:scared::soexcited::scared:

afternoon!

I still don't have my own internet yet... I'm thinking about getting one of those Verizon cards so that I could get internet just about anywhere.

i just tether my phone to my laptop, so i get internet basically everywhere anyway. i can't overuse it, but i should have internet at home and also at school, so there aren't many situations where i'd have to use it.

I wonder what I will do today.

Before I go on my last mini-trip, I need to go to my parents' house and clean out my room a little more. I should also go to LSU and get my ID to avoid waiting in a long line at orientation.

Same- I'm going back to school this Friday to get my id so I don't have to deal with that next week.

Also, I got Costco membership this morning. Wooo for buying toilet paper and fruit in bulk! Btw, their free samples were rockin today. If I sampled every station, that would probably be enough to be my lunch.

I think you just had your food situation for the duration of med school taken care of!

Aahahaha tethering...

Are you in Miami yet?

Fo seriously. I'd do that pretty often if it were 5 mins away, but it's like 15 and I don't wanna lose my parking space!

i dont wanna take out graduate plus loans, why is med school so expensive 😡

i think im gonna pay out of pocket for living expenses to eliminate more than direct loans :annoyed:

What time are you coming? I'll fb you my number so we can meet up! I should be there around noonish if there's no traffic, which there always is. :annoyed:

It's about 15-20 mins away.

Yah I just got billing statement email... :uhno:

My internet is royally screwing up today. +pissed+

But I'm cooking teriyaki chicken thigh fillets from Sam's (i.e. I have a ton of them in bulk), so that makes things a little better.

Mmmm teriyaki chicken. Does it come already marinated and you just have to cook it? There's this pre-packaged/marinated salmon that I really like from Costco. I steam some veggies and I'm good to go for dinner!

speaking of food, im also practicing my cooking skillz for med school..

i dont think my mom will let me leave if i dont master everything food related 😛

Yep, you just throw it in the oven. Or in my case, the toaster oven. I only use the big oven for pizza.

I'm working on my cooking skillz as well. Tonight I'm going to try honey-dijon panko crusted chicken breasts! :xf:

I hate it when mail requires signatures. 😡😡 I was supposed to have starcraft to play when I got home today!

Yeah, that's annoying.
