Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know it's a few days late, but Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

I feel like Michegan State got a lil' robbed. 🙁

....and I miss Blunder's "tweets". He's probably all busy, being MD/PhD'ish.

Trying to enjoy my last hours of Thanksgiving break with a glass of wine and my current tv show obsession before starting school again tomorrow. 🙁

Btw, remember back in August when I said I wanted to get to 4k posts before school started? Yeah...oops.

I feel ashamed to post right now. 🙁

LOL! I love it!

I'm a UK fan, and TN just mopped the floor with us for the 26th year in a row. Could always be worse 🙂

I don't know about the rest of you, but Finals and a much-needed 2 week break coming up in about 2 weeks! Can't wait!

good until you showed up......only kidding:meanie:!

Hope everyone here had a good break, I was horribly sick and studying since we now have finals (who makes finals right after turkey break). But it was still nice to at least not have to go to classes!🙂

Good luck with that!! We have finals for this module in 3 weeks, so I'm not too worried about it for the moment.

Does this have something to do with the new picture under your name...?

One of my best friends from high school and college has been lost at sea for 5 days while teaching in the Marshall Islands. Prayers requested. Thanks everybody.

🙁

:xf: :xf: :xf:

My car got broken into last night. 🙁 Boo.

And LSU almost lost to Ole Piss. :wtf:

Correction: LSUcks should have lost to Ole Miss

Congrats on your first ever opportunity to have the Magnolia Bowl trophy (aka...first LSWho win over Ole Miss is three years 🙂)

Sorry to hear about your car 🙁

Study procrastination time. Abdomen and pelvis are boring. We have 4 hours of lecture tomorrow. :scared:

Me thinking I've caught up with stuff is about to come crashing down.

Me thinking I've caught up with stuff is about to come crashing down.

I've been procrastinating like crazy these past couple days. I'm actually going to try to get something done tonight though.

And I never feel like I'm caught up with stuff anyway. Even before the test, I always feel like I didn't get to review everything satisfactorily!

I need 45/145 on head and neck to pass anatomy. How important is it for the boards? Motivation is lacking right now.

Also, isn't it fitting that two hardest parts of anatomy are pelvis and skull.

second page is unacceptable!
BUMPITY!

You know my biggest dissapointment of med school so far....the fact that math decided to show up in physio. I know its easy math but it is quite unwelcome and I'd appreciate if it would stop it.

My lizard just stood on top of it's rock and made a crazy frog-esq leap towards the cage top (and came pretty close to it).

Didn't know these things could jump that well, brb buying a cage lid.

That's crazy. I've never seen one do something like that. He must have just been plotting for months now.

Same here. Biostats is also a snoozefest if you have had stats before.

I don't think we take that stuff.

I'm sorry to hear that met. 🙁 I hope everything turns out ok. :xf:

Head and neck dissection is so annoying. Everything is so squished together. I don't know how the dental kids do it.

Anyone doing anything super exciting over winter break?

apparently im still a pre-med according to my status... a pre-med does not deserve to go through the hell that is Histology.

meta if you want a good old school laugh, look at my post before this one... (will have to click through my profile to see it)

Yeah, I was sitting there like "is this real life". He even did that ridiculous "I'm flying through the air" leg flail.

He must be longing for freedom poor little guy.

It's going to be my relaxing break. Saving the more fun vacationing for the spring.

haha, I remember that thread. and long time no see!

I have alot of beer, and an Embryology book. I can safely say this is NOT the lamest Saturday of my life...because of the beer...but you probably already deduced that.

well this was supposed to be a depressing study weekend but bf rolled into town like a prince charming on a white horse.....forget studying 😀
<3 my amazing bf

First off, its kind of funny that this thread is still in the pre-med forums.

Anywho, it works to my advantage because now I can ask you all a question. I'll be starting school in July and I have a question about loans and whatnot. All of the schools that I interviewed at had their loan schedule in our interview packet. They all had similar numbers estimating the cost of living (room and board), spending money, travel, etc.

Can you guys tell me how tight it is living on loans? Also, do med schools usually offer health insurance, dental, etc.? I'm just curious as to how the money situation will be once med school starts. Obviously I'll be living on money I'm going to have to pay back at some point, but how closely do they get in estimating how much you will need per month and all that?

I ask because I have been financially independent through college, having to support myself throughout and staying on a very tight budget. Just wondering if I will have to live as lowly as I did in undergrad, not that I couldn't do it again...I'm just curious.

Any feedback is appreciated!

^ I believe all schools offer health insurance (at least here we are required to have insurance of some type you can either buy one of their plans or get our own). We can opt to buy vision/dental through the same insurance company but it's more money.

I'm not living on loans, but I am living fairly cheaply and I would be within the calculated COL if I hadn't bought a car in the spring. I'm in a pretty cheap area so it's not hard to live decent on a smallish budget. I think last year I spent around 11k and lived pretty well.

It varies.

I think a lot of it has to do with where you decide to live. I know people who lived on campus (very very cheap, but not much around to do) and have a lot of loan money left over for the year. Or if you decide to have roommates, which will cut down on that cost. I live by myself in a nicer part of town, and while my loan money isn't "tight", others definitely have a little more money left over.

Other things to consider are if you have other obligations to pay for bill-wise. Car note, car insurance, health insurance, etc., which will all eat away at your loan money.

Also, do med schools usually offer health insurance, dental, etc.?

I know my school offers health, but I don't think they do dental (not sure). In my case, the health insurance through the school is a really, really good plan for the money. However, I opted out of getting the insurance through the school because the plan I currently have is cheaper and covers the major events. I didn't see the point in paying extra for benefits I wouldn't use.

I'm just curious as to how the money situation will be once med school starts. Obviously I'll be living on money I'm going to have to pay back at some point, but how closely do they get in estimating how much you will need per month and all that?

I think they do a decent job. You'll have to see how they calculate it. They may only give you 10 or 11 months of the COL for your first year (I.e August-May/June), which isn't that big of a deal unless you decide to move in a month early and then it could make money a little tighter.

I don't live as tight as I did in undergrad, but you aren't going to have enough money leftover, to say, buy season tickets to a sports team  . It really depends on how you spend your money. I tend to eat out a lot more than I used to because I don't feel like cooking a lot these days.

Finals week.

I might die.

This semester kind of killed me. I can't WAIT for Friday.

Hi everyone! It's been forever since I've been in this thread.
