Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well, looks like I'm going to have to pay for crap anyway, when this was what I was trying to avoid. My money = non-existent.

Um, I'm not sure how the driver thingies work, but I'm not sure you have to buy them.

Who knows about computers? Someone said something about this earlier.

how are you 2014ers surviving? excited yet?

Barely. Excitement will follow soon (hopefully).

You just need to go to your laptop's specific website and they should have all the drivers there.

It's very simple and straightforward

OK, I swear there was a question in here for me at one point.

I didn't pay. Residential Life offers computer fixing-up to all residents for free.

yeah i stopped and realized that so i took it out. you have quick eyes

and drivers are free... its just annoying downloading them and restarting a million times when you install them

blue sorry to hear the bad news man. 🙁 when were you complete??

Well, I am downloading now - this whole thing is just a work in progress and I can't really do anymore damage now. This is all just to avoid spending more money, boy I am glad this didn't happen during the school year.

Complete 7/13.

All this talk about computers makes my head spin. 😕

First rejection. Damn, it stings.

🙁 sorry to hear. I remember riding the bus through Boston to go to a Target and the neighborhood got scarier and scarier (I've seen worst elsewhere; this is relative to the rest of Boston that I've ventured through) and BU medical seemed to be in the middle of it all. It just seemed like an island- a scary run down portion of the city surrounded by paradise in comparison. But then again a lot of medical schools have sketchy surroundings

Well its recommended you do a clean wipe of your system every so often anyways since a lot of stuff will bog it down over time. Are you restoring with a Windows CD (assuming you use windows since your computer went down )? It's better to do that than to restore using one of those restore CDs that came with your original laptop since they will usually restore your laptop with a bunch of bloatware (cr*p that slows down your laptop)- of course this depends on where you got your laptop (I think Lenovo is not as bad as HP/Sony/Dell)

Yeah, I restored with XP, but I didn't have a backup CD. Never made one (stupid, I know) and couldn't make one after my computer was messed up because I didn't want the same stuff happening all over again. The whole thing is really my fault and I'm basically just bitching about it hoping someone will have something useful to say to me. It seems to be working, thanks for all the advice. (It's also a good way to get to 500 posts)

So question about all this driver stuff. So when my computer got all fixed, I think they forgot a few drivers (for instance I can't play videos from file), but I obviously don't know which ones. Would reinstalling all of them hurt anything?

Eh I've never used my backup CD. The only thing you need is your XP disc. Just backup your important files. Reinstalling programs shouldn't take that long unless you had a million programs that you found absolutely essential. What will probably be annoying is the windows update(especially if you need to upgrade to SP2).

Nah reinstalling should just install over whatever was there. I would just install the graphics driver and see if that helps (maybe you just need media codec packs?). Installing everything is annoying overkill. I'm probably a little in over my head now, but can you not play any videos or just certain types?

Oooh, it wasn't a file. It was a DVD. I remember now. But yeah...

So my computer finished cleaning its hard drive and I reinstalled Windows XP, but now I have no idea what to do. It's like it doesn't recognize itself, the volume control interface doesn't work, it doesn't know it has a wireless internet card, the screen view/resolution just looks weird...
Don't know what's going on and how to fix it...

Oh and Blue sorry for your rejection, I have a feeling my first 2 are on their way come next week...

You need to install the drivers for your devices.

solution; buy a mac and you will never have to deal with that **** again😛

👎

Ok, I'm now trying to download the drivers. I wish there was just a pack with all of them, because there are far too many and I'm getting confused. I hate computers but I need them so much...

It's easy dude. Just right click on my computer, go to the hardware tab, and then click on device manager. It will tell you there if the driver is missing for a particular device. Start with the motherboard stuff, then move on to video card, and just keep going.

Same advice applies here. Check out the device manager to see if anything is missing. Sounds like either a video card/integrated graphics driver or an optical drive driver.

Coolio. Thanks for the help, boys.

Ok, where is it gonna tell me what's missing?

Are you able to get to device manager (if not, do you have Windows XP or Vista?)? If you are, it should have some red X or something that stands out right away if your driver is not properly installed.

For XP to open up Device Manager: "To open Device Manager, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager. "

For Vista: Start, then Control Panel, then Systems and Maintenance, then System, and on left column should be an option for Device Manager

Ok cool. There's a yellow question mark. That's something missing huh?

yeah... what is it?

and what's your laptop? You can usually google your laptop model and find the manufacturer's site that will have all the necessary drivers you will need

Yeah, I have a whole dropdown category with yellow ?s. Oh, the download is taking a while.

yeah maybe make a restore CD after you installed all your drivers and have windows fully updated so if you ever need to go through this again, you can restore it to that point instead of reinstalling every driver again

Oh, yeah. Once I get everything back to normal, that's one of first things I'm doing.
Ooh, accidental top.

I think I need one of these...

kinda looks like a dart in the cat's neck- maybe they tranquilized it to get it in that position in order to be able to photograph that picture 😀

So I now have wireless Internet!!! and I'm installing McAfee right now, so this crap doesn't happen again. This is starting off well, the next things to do are the graphics and audio drivers because my screen just looks weird.

Haha fine. You can be my e-bf. I haven't heard from my last one in awhile. I think he's been moving to his new med school though.
