Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
penn state is a good place to go. hershey is a nice small fun town not too far from philly.

drexel is nice too, its located on a suburbish part of philly. its a HUGE medical school with many of its students coming from BA/MD programs and linkage post-bacs. Hanhemann used to be a top name in philly, along with temple, before Penn started to dominate the area (i think temple makes good money still from its set of patients, hanhemann has gone back and forth between private insurers i believe)

Nice! Good to know! I've added Penn. So now I think I'm set with my 5 schools. I'll debate about Loyola a little longer.

thanks man, honestly i was looking for some east coast love so i didn't have to spend much on interviews. i was just looking for a place to get in by Oct 15 ish (i'd be cool going to DO/Carib) so that I could just switch jobs come december. I've been making scraps at lab, its kinda getting tiring doing more (significant) work than the post-docs and getting paid much less when i could have just gone to J&J or GSK (or even a lower paying NIH IRTA where atleast people would seem like they could talk to me). I just wanna publish my papers and bounce and go make some money/take some time off.

but for the time being, gotta keep working hard i guess

Dude, I hear you. I have been at my research job for ~4 years and I want to get out of there so badly. The pay and benefits suck, but I might switch to a PRA position which would double my pay... But they might not take me with less than a year before med school would start and I feel awkward saying that I probably won't get in this year.

I'm thinking about applying to DO schools as well, just so I can start next year. I don't want to drag this process out for two years and I don't think it matters when all is said and done.

for real, i feel like ive worked pretty hard (at least after graduation) and im pretty happy with myself so wherever takes me i'm game or whatever.

i wanna go to like northern europe for a vacation or something. stockholm or wherever. i heard they are really expensive (food/alc tax) like beer is around 10-12 dollars.

Totally agree.

From an opportunity cost standpoint, you should def apply to some DO schools

Yeah, definitely plan on adding one or two. I will do some DO shadowing later this month or early next and hopefully have a DO letter by this time next month.

oh honey, it only gets worse from here. brace yourself.

actually, I thought the beginning of thesis-ism was the worst. having to come up with what to do, and making decisions and such was the worst. everything else was better than that.

not for me. my low point was in march of senior year when i had to go to sleep, set my alarm for 3 am, get up, and run to lab to do the next step in my transformation, and run back home to go back to sleep. i had to do this multiple times over the course of a month or so. damn yeast cells. so much fussier than e. coli.

ugh that sounds awful!!!

Philip Rivers signs 6-year $93 million contract. So much money.

Luckily I don't have to do experiments. I just gotta do lots and lots o' math.

yea, martha's vineyard

Damn! That lucky SOB! A few months into his new job and is already on vacation. They should make presidents work like interns... No breaks, always on call, and everyone pimps them because they don't know ****. ha ha

So who's worth their contracts the most, Rothlisberger, Manning, or Rivers?

well, i would say roethlisberger > rivers > manning, in terms of contract worth.

manning is just a whiner who got lucky a couple years ago in the super bowl. rivers will win 2 superbowls in his career, i can feel it

yeah, i suppose that is ick. i had rats, so we could schedule them to sleep when we wanted them to. 🙂 except for part of the third experiment when we messed up their sleep and had to check at random times. so my thesis time was was consuming, but mostly during the day.

and now i play with neurons. now those can be finicky, some days.

I don't begrudge presidents the occasional vacation. But what is with the last couple (Obama and Bush) and the frequent vacations? I don't see it as a job that's condusive to lots of vacationing. If Obama wants a cushy job he should go write another biography.

I think Rivers is the most talented. But Rothlisberger has the most rings so far, he might win some more.

That's your problem! The thinking thing isn't that becoming of you. Manning is definitely going to outshine both of them this year.

rivers has a bad attitude, manning is getting old and rothelsberger is irresponsible. i vote brady

are we talking about eli?

i think phillip rivers is the most talented out of the three, but the chargers choke too much. the other 2 are SB winners (i think its downhill for eli, probly ben too, but ben is like a God in Pitt)

you're killing me classy. the other posters are right, rivers is the most talented. he is fiery, a leader, an accurate passer, and it's not his fault the entire team has been injured the last couple of playoffs (although 2007 was a choke job against the patriots...i think sportcenter ran a "top 10 ways the chargers lost to the patriots"). the media east coast bias in sports is why people have a bad perception of rivers, they never give him the credit he deserves, and they always verbally blow jay cutler, the biggest diva of them all!

and i think we're talking about eli manning, not peyton.

i like peyton though, good tv commercial personality. he should be back this year

peyton in his prime >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (and i used to be a huge hater)

So annoying. You can only hear about the Red Sox, Yankees, Celtics, and Patriots so much before it gets really, really old.

Brady is the best, followed my Brees, then Peyton Manning, then everyone else.

my thesis experiment was generally waking up in the middle of the night and going "****! i forgot to feed my rats! and running over to lab at 3am to feed them" also, on two separate occasions i had a rat die on me after two months of training when i tried to implant some tetrodes in its brain. talk about frustrating.

also ciello, i love neurons, i spent my entire undergraduate career learning about them...what kind of research are you doing?

agree (unless the injury takes a toll on brady - carson palmer hasnt been the same since)

i like aaron rodgers to get next but idk, he could be overrated, not sure

Rodgers is up there, I think he's gonna have a huge year, he has the pieces and the experience under his belt.

Rivers is very talented.
Whoever said Manning is getting old and then pointed out Brady, uh, I don't know which Manning you're talking about, but Brady is only one year younger than Peyton, so that argument = fail.
Brees is on fire the last couple of years and is the best quarterback in the league right now, the Saints just need to stop choking and actually do something. He's wasting his best years. Don't even get me started on the Saints....

If Saints even had a adequate defense, they'd be Super Bowl contenders.

Jimmer, you following the Giants game? In 13th inning.

100% right. watch out if it's yankees-sawks, nothing else in sports matters if that series is going on.

mcnabb gets it pretty rough from the media too (and the city of philly)

also 100% right. i think he never gets the credit he deserves. fans have plenty of fault with that too (philly has passionate fans, but they booed santa clause for christ's sake!)

maybe. they don't really have a dominant running game...brees passes for miles, and reggie bush is the biggest bust (based on college hype) as a running back. i guess the fact that they've been close before is a testament to brees though

Yeah, I think McNabb gets it a bit too hard sometimes. If it wasn't for him, Philly wouldn't have even been good for so long.

I'm very angry the Saints didn't do anything to address the need for a power back/bruiser this season. At least sign Edge. And Bush sucks as a running back, but catching the ball out of the backfield = mostly awesome. They also need to let him return more punts. He's gonna get injured anyway, might as well use him before it happens.
Brees is really underrated and amazing.

Alright, I'm out. Big day of many classes tomorrow.

that sucks about the rat. i never lost a single one in two years, except for one time that my advisor managed to give a bad ip injection. it was awful.

now i'm completely unrelated to my thesis stuff, but working with a prenatal model of cerebral palsy. doing some testing for neuroprotective agents against hypoxia-ischemia. good times. some of the neuronal ages we use don't like to grow all the time, especially after we cut off their oxygen. 😳

That sounds pretty interesting.
