Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i can tell that people get nervous defending their thesis because random peeps show up for the free refreshments and all, but you are most definitely going to pass dude. if you don't its pretty much the fault of your mentor

What are you guys doing your graduate work in?
Biomed Engineering

I don't think the department is going to get my cookies/coffee for my defense bc I'm defending outside the building. I don't see a need to go out and buy any either.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll do fine. Have you given presentations before?

global warming is ****ed up, whats going on with the climate, it is almost near freezing (well, low 50s) in philly already

Lots. I'm not nervous about speaking. I'm more nervous about my actual results. A really well known guy in my field is on my committee, and I have to impress him to pass.

i totally feel you on this. i think its the "worse" kind of nervous to be too

i just always lose it when i am speaking . . . you could ask me what my own name is and i wouldnt be able to figure it out. i am just afraid that a bunch of people will ask me questions that i know the answers to, but i will stumble and look like an idiot anyway.

honestly i am hoping to schedule my defense as close to Christmas as possible so almost nobody will come to it. grad school has been a rough experience for me and served solely as a bridge from undergrad to med school . . . i just want it to end as anticlimactically as possible (is that the right word?)

I try to imagine that my audience is a bunch of idiots (even when I know they're not). That way, I dumb it down to concepts that are simple to explain. I oversimplify when I'm speaking, but I think that helps me get through the explanation more easily.

Did anyone try watching that new show "Trauma." Oh man, puke in my mouth. :barf: I had to turn it off after like 10 minutes.

i glanced at it, but it just seemed hella dramatic. is it also hella unrealistic? i remember hearing someone say they actually liked the show

You better not call it yellow at your LSU-NO interview. I hear they auto-reject for those kinds of things. :meanie:
heh. Don't worry, I was referring to someone's post about it. I know my LSU colors...after all, I do bleed purple and gold 😉

Good luck! I may have to get thesis defense tips from you later lol

hi y'all!

Went to Chocolate World yesterday after my PSU interview and stocked up 😀. I like how the entire city smells like chocolate--the Hershey's plant is on one side of the city, the Reese's plant is on the other.

yea its a fun city. i like the new dark chocolate reeses

got a bag 😀. as well as a bag of cherry cordial kisses, candy corn kisses, cinnamon chips, and whopper-flavored hershey's syrup.

I live with 2 roommates and their boyfriends...I don't expect the candy to last through the weekend...🙄

i just had food in my lab, i feel like a bad ass

i worked in a lab once that was part of a research institute. at the orientation they said that there was a company paid to come in to the building randomly and take out the trash - then look through it to see if there was any food or wrappers, and to issue a report. it was bizarre. luckily i worked in the building where that didn't happen (the hospital)

i ate in a cell culture hood to be extra sterile. that makes me kinda weak but i'm taking small steps

for some reason I would be more afraid to eat in our hood. just because all the bad stuff is in there - even though it gets cleaned all the time.

yea its a fun city. i like the new dark chocolate reeses
i like the regular reeses too much to try them.

yea i was just kidding about the hood, dont eat in them... esp if you have aspirators, those things get smelly and nasty

ok, good. i was trying not to sound too mean 😉 but that would normally be hella gross, especially if it was a cell culture hood. on the other hand, my lab at school (rat behavior) had a hood that was used ~ 2x a semester to weight non-lethal compounds - a lot less dealthly

jeez, the boards are pretty heated out there this morning

yea that adcom decision before interview thread is useless. there's no reason to even talk about that stuff. just do your best at every stage of the app and move on

haha did it get worse since I commented?

everyone loves to add fuel to the fire sometimes :meanie:

lol, seriously. no one's even pointed this fact out in that thread.

L2D is just hella stressing everyone out, crushing their spirits, telling them that the 30-60 minute period could wipe out all accomplishments made in the last 4 years.

i feel like every time i post into one of those heated threads, the discussion just stops as soon as I post. I feel so left out 🙁

aww I interpreted it to mean the opposite! Like, the interview is make-or-break in that I could really do some good, not destroy myself. Maybe that's because I've got lower stats than the superstars on this board and I've got nowhere to go but up 🙂

I havent met any SDNers at my interviewers yet but they could have been on SDN and I wouldnt have known otherwise. However, SDN has been brought up at all my interviews in such awkward ways

Damn, I was sitting in the library computer lab, happily viewing and posting on SDN. And this guy sitting next to me, looks at my screen, and says "Oh you're on SDN, too. I was there the entire last night."

I just said, "oh" and continued on my SDN escapade.

Well my interview coordinator at GWU was telling us that we could all just get into one elevator to go up to the clinical lab, so as we're entering the elevator she goes "Yeah last time I put all the interviewees in the elevator, I ended up on SDN with people posting 'Ya the tour guide was cool until she made us all cram in the elevator'... They also posted that I was cool, crazy and hot"

Yeah I was just like... Cool. Lol

Haha that's weird.

Next time, the coordinator is going to say "Yeah, last time I put all the interviewees in an elevator, I told them how I ended up on SDN with people posting 'Ya, the tour guide was cool until she made us all cram in the elevator'...They also posted that I was cool, crazy, and hot'. Then I checked SDN a few weeks later and found out that they'd posted that as well!" :meanie:

Passed my defense! :soexcited: Now I'm going to go save some babies at the rescue squad.

L2D is great. I've been missing his dream crushing as of late I'll have to go view this thread.

If anyone posted stuff about me on SDN, good or bad, I would have like a full 30 minutes full of lols....

Passed my defense! :soexcited: Now I'm going to go save some babies at the rescue squad.
