Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
UF seems like a cool place though. in state tuition and a ridiculously high USMLEs right?

do you have any significant awards and stuff on those things tho? idk, emory just seemed pretty random to me. i studied them quite a bit over the past year and i just didn't see a really set critierion except that they like really accomplished artsy/sporty types.
I have some awards for my art from HS but that caliber of work had to be put on hold since premed life is way too fast paced for an oil painting or the the like..but my work was exhibited at a couple of Emory's common space galleries....doubt they would know that though lol

Thanks for being supportive.
Sometimes it sucks being inside my head because my love of ...thinking...takes me places that I really do not need to think about.
I am quite fine though. Getting 5 interviews scheduled and another one waiting to be is not bad at all. I just hate the uncertainty.

yea i know how it feels

do you think its the fear of not being in atlanta next year thats kinda making you a little sad?

im pretty sure its my last year in philly. i was sad when it was my last year in nyc knowing i wouldnt be back. but at the same time, things always get more interesting because we mature and grow and the people around us do the same (since we are gonna be in school).

its kinda exciting to think what new places we could end up at and how we could integrate into that city and more

Agreed. Living somewhere new is fun, once you get over leaving a place you liked. The other thing to keep in mind is that 4 years isn't really all that long in the grand scheme of things.

Actually....Duke is stealing all my Emory love right now. And even though I am probably in the minority when I say this but I kind of enjoy the fact that Durham is such a small sleepy town. I never really connected with the city of Atlanta, even though I am from here. Emory is sort of a bubble of tranquility in comparison lol

Ridiculously high is Miami. Their Miami campus' average is 229, their Boca campus' average is 236. UF is pretty high too, but I don't really like the atmosphere there. They're on a pretty strict curve with an honors/high pass/etc. de facto ABCD system, creates a lot of cutthroat competition. Their tests are very board-oriented tho, so they have like a 225ish average step I score.

Hey, JJ, just got back to your question on UPitt, sorry I couldn't be more precise!

you know, i'm pretty torn abuot the small town vs. big city thing too, i'm leaning toward big city right now because i will have spent the past 7 year in a tiny little town, and i'd like to see some changes. but i think small town fits my lackadaisical personality better in the long term

Hey, i asked on the pitt thread but nobody answered. Did anyone write about doing something illegal on the moral dilemma question?

I love portraits for subject matter. Especially the somewhat non-traditional ones, I like to try and capture the quirks of the person.
My favorite medium is oil paints...it is hard work though getting them work. I also love colored pencils as silly as it sounds...you can make some really intense contrasts with them.

Did you ask a long time ago about that? Probably before I became hardcore SDN 😎

What a coincidence, i love portraits too! Sweet drawing btw, I am still pretty unconfident about my abilities to draw in color 🙁 This was a portrait i did a year ago:

yea board scores are obviously individual dependent i guess. we talked about it at the last mstp interview. i think the highest is like penn mstp which has almost a 250 average and the # for UF floated around upper 240s (being the highest amongst MDs) but i dont know how true that is. vandy said around 240s too but they get 2 months off to study and mstps sometimes have extra time

as you can probably tell, i still needed grids to help me with proportions 🙁

^wow that is really a beautiful piece

im sometimes blown away by how talented everyone in both academic and nonacademic areas

UF is not in the upper 240s, low 230's at most I think

what did you like about duke?
I know people are going to argue with me that it is impossible to tell in a day but I really liked the little things about Duke community...too many to describe but I specifically have to give my med student host credit-after i got home and it hit me that she didn't have to do any of the things she did for me...that says something about the kind of people that go there you know?

also-the students I talked with, I felt like something clicked (don't ask me how it came up but my interviewer even got really into my crazy theory about deja vus-that interview was soo much fun)....that has yet to happen at another school.

there is more but I don't need another reason to wish that March was here already lol

If you do a sports-related scene like this I will buy it.

Thanks, but even your color pencil drawing is more difficult, show me some of your oil paintings too! Those things are tough to draw. Man, this is really making me wanna start drawing again lol, I really wanna get better at it!

PETA to Manu

To bludgeon a 4-ounce animal to death, it takes either a small man or a totally unthinking one—with no respect or consideration for lives humbler than his own. This is a time when athletes in particular need to be on their best behavior around any animal and show that they have brains and a heart, not just reactionary brawn.
Bats always try to avoid contact with humans, and there are plenty of easy ways to keep bats out of a basketball arena (or your home). We hope that the next time someone's life is on the line, Manu Ginobili will take just a few seconds to think before he acts.

Yea....I need to hone my skills. I considered getting a second minor in Visual Arts (just because I LIKE it lol) but I am already graduating with about 30 credits over...aka I am busy busy.

You're very talented, you should really keep it up! How did you learn how to draw? I want to get some systematic teachings since i'll have some stress-less free time in the upcoming months

Ridiculous.

Also, wtf is with "this is a time when athletes in particular need to be on their best behavior"? Is this a critical time in the history of athlete-animal relations? 😕

I just did it A LOT. If you take a beginers' class they will actually say what you need to change, modify. The classes I've taken at Emory are much more "this doesn't feel quite right" and waive at your painting.......helpful. lol

btws I thought I'd show you for comparison (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y145/miss_thropp/My Art Stuff/Self Portraits/wishful.gif) it is much less detailed and developed than yours actually but I feel like they have a similar feel to them....I sound about as direct as those art profs

Yea, I'm thinking of a membership at drawspace.com maybe have do a few lessons there and have the ppl there give me suggestions.

As for your painting, I think the same feel comes from the fact that we both employed a fairly small amount of cross-hatching and we both used smearing to smooth things out a bit. Very nice btw, self portrait right?

ok well as much as i hate to leave, I actually have an interview in the morning. So goodnight everyone!

gl, i actually have an interview tomorrow morning as well lol, heck i had one yesterday morning and i didn't sleep 'till like 4:30...less than 3 hrs of sleep. I need at least 6 tonight 'cuz it's a long drive back to orlando

yea im thinkin bout buying a painting for my room

Just got a signed Pablo Sandoval portrait thing. It's cool.

You are definitely very talented. Keep it up. 👍

Feel like posting any more of your stuff?

I see we're actually having productive conversation tonight.

And, Saints, anyone? 😀

Good game. I would love to see saints versus colts.

I'm afraid to check my fantasy bball team. Am I getting killed?

Drive safe Ksmi. G'morning everyone!

How are the saints 7-0? That came out of nowhere.

Interview day. Driving there are back for a total of 8 hours. I hope I don't crash.

Why are you interviewing at Shreveport? Did you change your mind (IIRC you indicated you would drop this one)? Seems like a logical one to knock off the list given your acceptances...but I guess it is worth the cost of a tank of gas and a very long day.

I am not knocking the school. I know the city very well, and have 'family friend' connections to the school. PM if you want details.
