So I'm in the ER as a volunteer and we just got a new tracking system. Previously, our tracking system told us the initials, age, reason for check-in, and location of the patient so that we could bring visitors to their beds. However, the new tracking system shows us the above, their full names, all of their lab results, SAMPLE history, their treatments, interventions, you name it. For example, I could look up electrolyte levels of anyone in the ER.

Yes, I am bound by HIPAA, but this seems like too much to be in front of volunteer. I feel guilty even looking because I feel like it should be none of my business even if I'm bound by HIPAA. What do you guys think?

Seems pretty usual for someone who is active on the clinical side of things. I had to crawl all over my patients' e-med records these past summers to find info that I needed. I definitely saw much more than was absolutely needed. You aren't spreading this info around, I wouldn't feel guilty at all.

thanks guys. i'm not too upset about it, i doubt i would have ended up there anyways. it was just annoying to have an interviewer that seemed to have this preconceived notion she didn't want me at her school and i have no idea why. maybe she likes uva and hates all hokies or something😛
